R-E-S-P-E-C-T...find out what it means, Barack

POSTED: Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 6:48 PM

Well, the good news is that the Queen of Soul will be drivin' down the Freeway of Love (since she refuses to fly) to perform at Barack Obama's inauguration on Jan. 20. The bad news is that Obama seems determined to deliver the purpose-driven knife to his once most-enthusiastic supporters, naming pop pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation just days after Warren helped to deep-six gay marriage in California. He's even lost People for the American Way on this one:

Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church's engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance. He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia. He has repeated the Religious Right's big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.

Sure, it was probably centrist voters who put Obama over the top back on 11/4, but it was liberals -- the kind who voted against for Prop 8 or would have if they had the chance -- who gave the bulk of those hundreds of millions of dollars who made it happen. He won't raise $750 million next time around on this pace. The other good news is there's no way 4 million are coming to his inauguration now.

But we'll always have Aretha:

"Welcome to Bill Clinton's third term." Promise? I can take another eight years of peace and prosperity and my country being respected in the world again. Clinton was also a center-left politician who put Republicans in important positions and made symbolic gestures that sometimes surprised me. This Warren guy is a real tool, but he's being asked to speak, not serve as a cabinet secretary.

I agree Hamlet. Did Bush EVER pick a democrat for anything? If so, I don't remember it. Why is it always the democrats that are willing to compromise while the snobby republicans never seem to want to. It's all "You're either with us or you're against us". This attitude is NOT what we need in this country. Neither Obama nor Bill Clinton were bleeding heart liberals. They are (were) centrists. The current crop of republicans can't seem to understand this. They think anything in the center is too liberal. I hope they never get into power again. Sure, the democrats are far from perfect but they at least will listen to the other point of view.

Funny how little we've progressed....have a racist at the table? No way. A guy who equates same-sex relationships with pedophilia and incest? That's "compromise" and "diversity." I thought Obama was smarter than this. On the day he was elected, an entire group lost their right to marry in California. Instead of noting this loss, he invites a large supporter to be front and center. It's disgusting. I won't be watching.
