With all local eyes on the Phillies' quest for the World Series, I had no idea that tonight's game was taking place outside of the United States:

The McCain campaign and the RNC are pumping new robocalls into North Carolina that question Barack Obama's patriotism by charging that he and his fellow Dems put "Hollywood above America," another sign that Republicans are seriously worried about losing the traditionally red state to Obama.

The robocalls -- which we obtained from a North Carolina reader -- hit Obama for attending a celebrity fundraiser in Hollywood while efforts to address the financial crisis got underway in Washington.

To be semi-serious, I remember not that long ago (like, the '90s) that we took great pride in Hollywood, for all its many flaws, as a kind of symbol of America , our unique culture and our freewheeling spirit, a prime reason why notions of America were so deeply embedded and, not so long ago, so popular around the globe. Now it's not only not a symbol of America, it's not even part of America to somebody who wants to be our president.

Just because 65 percent of the people there (there are plenty of conservatives in La-La Land -- have you forgotten this...or this) disagree about some political issues with 65 percent of, say, Alabama, that means you're not part of America anymore? How lame is that?

Of course let's not forget that McCain "suspended" his campaign, then took 24 hours to get from NYC to DC. Why did it take him so long? In part because he was meeting with Baroness de Rothschild.

Why are they idiots, bp, because they disagree with you?

Will Conservatives live outside of the major cities, according to the demographics. Who is your editor, don't they check the facts? Keep voting for the Marxist, maybe when Obama wants to take over the presses, you might see how great you have it.

"Just because 65 percent of the people there.....disagree about some political issues with 65 percent of, say, Alabama, that means you're not part of America anymore?" You've created a false dichotomy Will. Certainly it is possible to have policies that are good for Hollywood, but bad for America as a whole. Let's create an extreme, absurd scenario. Let's say that a politician wanted to siphon 90% of our tax dollars into Hollywood in order to benefit his supporters. Would this not be an example (absurd though it is) of putting the good of Hollywood above the good of America...though it is obviously still part of America.

"Now please explain to us all why any of us should value any of their opinions." I never claimed to value their opinions, but they are certainly entitled to them. And what of right wing celebs like Hank Williams Jr, Robert Duvall, etc.?

1) What fascinates me more than anything is the degree to which you are blind to your own elitism. 2)The phrase "put Hollywood above America" does not mean, or imply, that Hollywood is not PART of America.

McCain is a moron. He himself attended a fundraiser in Hollywood 2 weeks after Obama's. I can't believe anything him or Palin says. They are like Bush and Cheney which should flat out sacre anyone and everyone.

what is truth?
Lame but typical - the right uses "San Francisco" the same way. Their entire movement rests on stereotyping; that's what makes them the natural descendants of the racist and religiously bigoted movements that have always lurked in the shadows. They appeal to the type of person like the lady at the McCain rally who called Obama an Arab, and did it as a reason to think badly of him. I'm not saying that the right is alone in this; but their most vocal personages, especially the talk-radio set, take a pride in it and do their best to spread it. And they want to talk about associations? When the Republicans nominate a vice-presidential candidate who is married to an avowed secessionist? But then again, if we had allowed secession, hadn't fought that civil war, maybe people like Obama would be in their right place... That is their message, and it is the dark side of America.

I don't think most celebrities believe that "their opinions are somehow more important or valid". They think they're just as right as any of us think. It's the tabloids covering their opinions (and on some level the people buying that stuff) that act like it's important.

"Explain to me why I or anyone else should listen to them." . . . First, explain to us why we should care if you do or don't.
