Palin slides off the far-right glacier on climate change

POSTED: Monday, December 7, 2009, 10:17 PM

I don't know if Sarah Palin is going for the White House in 2012 or the big house, as in a mansion paid for by selling a couple of million books in 2009, but I do know she's now the Queen of The 26 Percenters. Fresh off her seeming endorsement of the anti-Obama "birthers," Palin came out with a wintry, Twitter-y blast against climate change tonight, urging the president to boycott this week's global warming summit in Copenhagen over what she calls "snake-oil science."

Palin has a long record of saying things about global warming, since living in Alaska, she can see climate change from her house! And she's been nothing if not consistent in her amazing inconsistency on the subject. John Kerry could windsurf all the way from here to Bali on these shifting political blasts of hot air:

1)"Many scientists note that Alaska's climate is changing," Governor Palin said. "We are already seeing the effects. Coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, retreating sea ice and record forest fires affect our communities and our infrastructure. Some scientists tell us to expect more changes in the future. We must begin to prepare for those changes now."

-- Sept. 14, 2007, in announcing the creation of an Alaska Climate Change Sub-Cabinet (via Nexis)

2) "A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made. "

-- Aug. 29, 2008, after she was named GOP vice presidential nominee.

3) ANCHORAGE — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin acknowledged Tuesday that global warming was harming her state but said stepped-up natural-gas production could mitigate its effects.

Speaking at a hearing before Interior Secretary Ken Salazar -- the third of several he is holding across the country to consider renewed oil and gas leasing on the outer continental shelf -- Palin said that relatively clean-burning natural gas could supplant dirtier fuels and slow the discharge of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

-- April 15, 2009.

4) Copnhagn Climate Summit;Obama should boycott in light of bogus "findings"Public leary re:snake oil science,he must take stand on climategate

-- Palin from her Twitter account, earlier tonight, adding later...

2 much of "global warming" agenda is merely to halt responsible developmnt;sound science must b foundation 4 Copnhagn decisions, not politics

So which snake-oil science are we talking about here? The snake-oil science of the thawing permafrost and other climate change effects that you saw in Alaska with "your own lying eyes" in 2007? The snake-oil science that caused you to call for more burning of cleaner natural gas just seven months ago? Or "snake-oil science," the phrase that is catnip to the 26 Percenters, along with "birth certificate"? Whatever -- it's their mad tea party, and now Sarah Palin is officially their Queen of Hearts.

The fact that they still teach global warming in school should be enough, but that's a "progressive conspiracy," right? It's all part of our plan to destroy the right wing with the truth. Oh wait. Since they truth is anathema to them, it might just work.

Pete -- reading what Will wrote, my conclusion is that Sarah believes that climate change exists, but disagrees that the cause of it is primarily man-made.

Actually, Gibba, Sarah has already won. She's won the race for mayor, won the race for Governor, won nomination for the Vice President of the United States, and has sold millions of books earning her millions upon millions of $$$. Some would say that she has been more successful than Hillary Clinton who never won the nomination of her party, and had to be hand-carried into the Senate, and has been exiled as Sec of State. And Sarah's book will well out-sell Hillary's. Still want to talk about winners and losers?

Iggy, if anything she ever said was done with careful deliberation, I might believe you, but everything she does is based on getting theough the next thirty seconds.

SteveMG -- I actually agree with you... I don't consider Sarah a presidential candidate, but she is a political force. I do wish she would take some time to develop mature positions, though the "realtime" of the internet/twitter/facebook doesn't always allow for that.

Come on, Iggy, if she hasn't memorized some basic positions by now, she never will.I don't think she'll ever run, (because her schtick would take a huge hit by being the next Rudy Giuliani), but when so many have such ridiculous (a pause while I listen to the new Tiger song on WIP - GREAT!!!!!!!! ...Here comes another one, here comes another one right down Tiger Woods' lane) Where was I? Ah who cares

"So which snake-oil science are we talking about here?" Maybe this snake oil? http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/08/the-smoking-gun-at-darwin-zero/ What on earth justifies that adjustment? How can they do that? We have five different records covering Darwin [Australia] from 1941 on. They all agree almost exactly. Why adjust them at all? They’ve just added a huge artificial totally imaginary trend to the last half of the raw data! Now it looks like the IPCC diagram in Figure 1, all right … but a six degree per century trend? And in the shape of a regular stepped pyramid climbing to heaven? What’s up with that? Those, dear friends, are the clumsy fingerprints of someone messing with the data Egyptian style … they are indisputable evidence that the “homogenized” data has been changed to fit someone’s preconceptions about whether the earth is warming. One thing is clear from this. People who say that “Climategate was only about scientists behaving badly, but the data is OK” are wrong. At least one part of the data is bad, too. The Smoking Gun for that statement is at Darwin Zero. So once again, I’m left with an unsolved mystery. How and why did the GHCN “adjust” Darwin’s historical temperature to show radical warming? Why did they adjust it stepwise? Do Phil Jones and the CRU folks use the “adjusted” or the raw GHCN dataset? My guess is the adjusted one since it shows warming, but of course we still don’t know … because despite all of this, the CRU still hasn’t released the list of data that they actually use, just the station list. [snip] And with the Latin saying “Falsus in unum, falsus in omis” (false in one, false in all) as our guide, until all of the station “adjustments” are examined, adjustments of CRU, GHCN, and GISS alike, we can’t trust anyone using homogenized numbers.
