On telling the beating cops to beat it

The Fraternal Order of Police is mad at Mayor Nutter and his police commissioner Charles Ramsey, and so are protestors linked to the Rev. Al Sharpton (although not Sharpton himself) for quickly firing four city cops shown on tape beating up three shooting suspects. That can only mean one thing.

Nutter and Ramsey must have gotten it exactly right. As Elmer Smith notes, the middle road was the only sensible course of action:

Some think anything the good guys do to the bad guys is justified. Others see police as an army of occupation in their neighborhoods. Both will now view Nutter and Ramsey as politicians who place public sentiment above justice. It will be a recurrent nightmare as the trial of the three suspects parallel the criminal investigations of the police.

If course, if the past is prologue, nothing will really happen to the four cops and they'll probably even get their jobs back. But that decision is beyond the reach of Nutter and Ramsey. What they have shown -- both with this action and with their aggressive stance on new gun laws -- is a willingness to act quickly and boldly on Philadelphia's greatest crisis. Compare that to a mayor who fiddled, or at least worked on his monster trucks, while Rome burned.

Thank God the Ramsey took quick action. Enough of these ridiculous union procedures, hearings, blah blah blah. It's all on tape. I'm actually surprised that action occurred this quickly in Philly. I thought it would take forever. If only all of government in Philly could be this efficient and streamlined? (Dreaming...)

You have no perspective if you think that this is the greatest crisis in the city. No this is the greatest headline getter and fanner of passions currently. How about drugs, no jobs and the declining middle class? Oh, that's right you don't care about those things just cops beating some losers.

I say, Promote them!! I am sick of the criminal element and their civil rights! More thugs getting beat down, and maybe they will fear the police. Right now, they don't and shots being fired at the officers shows that lack of fear. THis city is heading in the direction of Detroit.

Some time back I questioned Ramsay's fitness for this job. Now based soley on the viseo he sacrifices some cops without a hearing. He needed to resist the pressure and wait for a thorough investigation. A bad precedent that may come back to haunt him.

The bottom line is that much is expected from those to whom much is given. I have a tremendous respect for the stress police are under and the dangers they face, but the fact is that police, because of the power invested in them, have to hold themselves, hard as it may sometimes be, to a better standard than these cops showed. There is a difference between a) using force to take down a potentially dangerous subject, and b) kicking them repeatedly once they are down and helpless. The first requires a split-second decision that may be difficult to second-guess. The second is going over the line into gratuitous, unnecessary violence. The saddest part is that it makes the jobs of the vast majority of cops who do hold themselves to the high standards we expect harder, by increasing the already far-too-high level of distrust in the communities that, because of the crime and violence there, need to be able to trust the police the most.

Good point, dear mr. ocjones. I mean, how could Ramsey think that watching a video of cops repeatedly kicking a suspect after he was already subdued sufficient evidence? I mean, maybe they really didn't kick the guy, but actually were only pretending to kick the guy and stopped their foots just short of hitting his body (You know, just for a few laughs. ) - a detail you can't tell from the video.

And of course, there's no way that Ramsey spoke to the cops that were there, listened to radio reports, or anything like that. I'm sure that to be so confident that his decision was based "solely" on the video you must have some kind of proof.

Either that, or you're just criticizing Ramsey simply because he was appointed by a Democrat. And we know you'd never let sycophantic partisanship affect your opinions.

Possibly you're simply supporting Ramsey for the same reason that you claim that ocjones is criticizing him. Sure, things don't look good for the cops involved, but are you really arguing ~against~ having a thorough investigation, Tps?

"Possibly you're simply supporting Ramsey for the same reason that you claim that ocjones is criticizing him." How could you even think such a thing? I'm sure our insipid sleuth has total access to all the evidence, to the detailed process that Ramsey undertook, as well as to Ramsey's personal introspection as he went through the deliberation process to reach his decision. I mean, to assume otherwise would mean that the sleuth is, dare I say, a sycophantic Democrat partisan hack. And we all know that couldn't possibly be the case. Right?

No. Not at all. But I don't doubt that Ramsey had sufficient reason for firing the cops. On the other hand, he had legitimate reasons to act quickly. One of the most important variables affecting successful law enforcement is community/police relations. Acting to help improve those relations is paramount. Any decent cop will tell you that community support is crucial for them to be effective at their jobs.

As for my partisan interests. I am not particularly a supporter of Nutter, and definitely didn't support the appointment of Ramsey. Nice point, however, and I can understand your point. Your logic is sound - but in this particular case it doesn't apply. Of course, it'll be interesting to see when you apply your logical thinking in ways that highlight hypocrisy of Republican sycophants.

"foots." Heh. It's amazing how many mistakes I can make in writing comments.

Yet more evidence of batboy's sycophancy. Just because I correctly recognize the idiot you voted into office twice for being an idiot, doesn't mean that I sycophantically support Democrats, batboy. In fact, I don't support many - because I think that the vast majority of them are corporate sellouts that are only interested in their own political status and lining their pockets (just l like Republicans, although in a slightly smaller percentage, perhaps). I never supported Clinton and will stick to that. I'm not like the Republican sycophants who whined incessantly about McCain, and will now tell us how great he is. Take a look at LGF. They hated him over there during the primary processes. But when Fred and Rudy showed to be complete losers, they all jumped on board the "straight talking express." To the point, yesterday, where they posted a painfully lame video of McCain on SNL, and all the comments were about how funny the guy is.

I support Obama precisely because I think he represents the potential to change the Democratic Party to be more likely to represent the most disenfranchised people in the country - and not rich fat cats who now have undue influence on our political processes.

what investigation is necessary? The same people who are advocating police breaking the rules as long as they are beating down black thugs are now saying that "proper procedures" werent followed in the firing of these rogue officers. Since you folks dont care about the rules why do we have all this hand wringing about whether or not these cops were thrown out without due process? who cares? They are already going to cost city taxpayers million in lawsuits and unfortunately if they listen to some of the folks here they will think they are right. If the cops were to beat down a few kids from the burbs people would be demanding that heads roll as soon as the video aired on the news. In fact, Ramsey himself probably would have been fired.

" He needed to resist the pressure and wait for a thorough investigation. A bad precedent that may come back to haunt him." Why dont people understand that allowing out of control officers to issue street justice and beat people at will will only make policing more difficult and dangerous? Why should some other officer get shot because these guys want to go around beating down unarmed suspects for fun? I mean at least make sure the guys have weapons before you beat them half to death. These idiots beat down 3 guys who didnt even do the shooting and posed no threat to them. And for their great judgement they got fired and will help these 3 guys get paid by the City. Sweet.

My concerns regarding police commissioner Charles Ramsey were never based on politics. I happen to have been living and working in and around D.C. during his tenure there, and a few of my family members still work and reside there. His record as police chief in Washington was not a distinguished one, and I felt and still feel that he's not suited for the Philly job.

Yes, Mayor Nutter and Commissioner Ramsey are moving with firm and decisive steps towards disenfranchising the cop on the beat. Nice move! What's next? Closing the precincts? Who needs cops? We have five new city ordinances which will clean up the streets in no time. Just don't let the fact that the ordinances are illegal (The DA's opinion, not mine) get in the way of your dream, Mr. Nutter!
