#OccupyWallStreet and today's (Egyptian) KFC
Hey, remember one of my first blog posts about Occupy Wall Street (of course you do) when I said I'll bet the Egyptian press made fun of the folks in Tahrir Square, too. For once I was right:
Occupy Wall Street's supporters have continually criticized both the dearth of media coverage of their movement and its dismissive tone. "The media has begun dismissing the protesters, calling them delusional, childish hippies," Elshamy says. "This is actually very similar to here in Egypt when the media portrayed protesters as thugs or foreign agents who were getting paid and had other agendas." At one point, Egypt's state media even suggested that the demonstrators were being brought out to the square by the promise of free buckets of KFC.
The crowd took the charges in stride. Vendors began selling T-shirts reading "I am a thug" and fake pamphlets featuring "foreign agendas." The square's makeshift medical tent was renamed "KFC hospital."
Most importantly, Elshamy says, is to be as "neutral and friendly as possible with whatever journalist, no matter where he is from."
Important takeway: Be friendly to journalists! Meanwhile, here's a good report on Occupy Philadelphia from the Inquirer's Monica Yant Kinney, who seems less cynical coming out of the protest than she was going in. Typical reaction.
And if you want to see what a good non-hack writer comes up with after spending some time in Zuccotti Park, check out Charles Pierce (who's just launched a fantastic new blog for Esquire):
"The interesting thing is just how incoherent they are, until they get their talking points handed down to them so they can have 'their own' opinion."
It's also interesting how many times I've heard this exact same opinion, which is clearly "your own opinion", stated by others. They must all be quoting you, huh? legatus- Well, they're officially 'mobs' now, according to Rep Cantor. The class war has begun. Who wants cake?
- ///The class war has begun. Who wants cake? ///
You must have been doing a Rip Van Winkle, because the class war was underway a long time ago. I guess for you it only starts when it agrees with your political view, right?
Hey Montani, Was it not democract Maxine Waters that stated that the Tea Party was a mob and that they should all go to hell? Or does not count in your book. ALJ
"Bunch of B.S.-"calling them delusional, thugs and with other agendas"??? Gee...sounds exactly like what you and the other Libs said about the Tea Party!!!Funny how they are now starting to include the Government in their protests...maybe they can be taught!!LOL!!! sarah89
Well, you guys have 46 comments, we have a few hundred in the streets. We win? HandNik- Great, now what have you won?
ALJ
Apparently you all feel that these folks are wrong for exercising their First Amendment right to peaceably assemble and protest. This is how our country started, and that right was paid for by the blood of Americans from ALL SIDES of political thought. Or are Tea Partiers the only ones now allowed to protest ? I missed when that law was passed.
And what's wrong with demonstrating frustration over the lack of jobs, middle class disenfranchisement, or the general economic conditions of the time? Not all these folks are young, or old, or black, or white, or union members. Some are even professionals who are long-term unemployeds also.
How wonderful it must be to believe that everyone who wants a job can have one. Time to burst your bubble: "Full employment" in economics implies a 5% unemployment rate, so there will always be unemployed people, no matter what you believe. philharmonic55- It is only wrong when they express an opinion which is different from their own; it is a sad state of affairs. The Tea Party people should be right there with these people but they are not allowed to speak their own mind. I attended a Tea Party meeting was run out of there because I want them to support campaign finance reform.

When the OWS protestors start spitting on our legislators and using racial epithets, then we can start comparing them to the Tea Baggers. Interesting that they now are defending MILLIONAIRES interests over the majority of Americans. Stalin would be proud! The Fundamentals of the Economy are Fine
Comment removed.
Obama is toast in 2012 and nothing can change this. The Independents giveth and the Independents taketh:

FUNDAMENTALS- what are yoou talking about? Oh, you mean those falacious accusations, for which there isn't one bit of evidence, from the 0bamacare vote day? I'm going to restrain myself and say you are a liar. How about the young man verbally assaulting the older Jewish gentleman at OWS. Check it out on Youtube. You really are shameless. georgel
