Not ready for his closeup, Mr. DeMille

POSTED: Wednesday, June 16, 2010, 7:44 PM

And I promise you I'll never desert you again because after 'Salome' we'll make another picture and another picture. You see, this is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!... All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.

-- Norma Desmond, 1950's "Sunset Boulevard"

I care about the small people. I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies or don't care, but that is not the case at BP. We care about the small people.

-- BP chairman president Carl-Henric Svanberg, speaking today at the White House.

The people are big, Mr. Svanberg. It's the corporate leaders who got small.

Steve Martin has more.

Gee Will, when I saw your headline, I thought you were referring to President Obama's address last night. No details no leadership, and now a 42% approval rating. He is in Bush territory(after 8 years) and he did it in 18 months! LOL. He will be a lame duck come November when he loses his majorities in Congress.

leaving aside his poor choice of words and the fact that something was lost in translation, what does this guy even mean? since when does this have anything to do with any partcular kind of people? aren't rich and poor alike equally affected by an environmental disaster? I want you to CARE about the BAZILLION GALLONS OF OIL that you're dumping into the ocean... that's what I want you to CARE about!

As much as I dislike and don't trust BP, I think it is very small of the American media to try to make something of this remark. Clearly the Chairman was trying to say that BP cares about the folks on the Gulf Coast. Of course, I am not sure that I believe him on that, but still I think this is piling on.

Actually this got me thinking about a Yosemite Sam cartoon: "I LOOOOOOOOVES THE LITTLE PEOPLE! AND BABIES! GIVE ME BABIES, LOTS OF BABIES!" Otherwise I do agree that this is much ado about nothing, though it doesn't help BP's image any.

And I have to add that I love the Sunset Boulevard reference Will. One of my all time favorite movies.

We have become a thin skinned population just waiting to be offended, wether it really is offensive or not. bill.atkin is correct. I knew what he meant. Anybody with half a brain should. Let's judge him him on the actions of BP. I think he will take enough heat over something that matters.

I doubt the little folk of the Gulf Coast are as easily dismissive as Will's fan club above, or need an Ivy League lesson in Swedish colloquialisms to figure out what BP really thinks. Seriously peabody, the irony of your having to resort to mentioning Beck is too much to bear. Bud Fox, on the other hand, Colbert would surely be envious....."aren't rich and poor alike equally affected by an environmental disaster?"

OT, but before Barry goes full carbon tax on us, it looks like the science may not be settled: "The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change misled the press and public into believing that thousands of scientists backed its claims on manmade global warming, according to Mike Hulme, a prominent climate scientist and IPCC insider. The actual number of scientists who backed that claim was “only a few dozen experts,” he states in a paper for Progress in Physical Geography, co-authored with student Martin Mahony." "Instead of the daily personal attacks and insults from the right, I'd love to hear their solutions or ideas for improving society and in turn this country." Nah, its much more entertaining to watch those who claim to have all the asnwers flounder miserably when they are in charge.

I presumed the guy meant "small business people." As much as everyone wants to nail BP - it's pretty obvious no other oil companies have a solution for the leak either. It could be Gulf, Exxon - doesn't matter - no one knows what to do. What we shouldn't do is take out all our frustrations on BP by boycotting their gas. It hurts our dealers and all the Americans that work for BP. We need BP to stay in business to clean this up - but right now the only thing Obama can do is demonize them because he sat on his arse and made wise guy comments like "I can't suck up the oil with a straw." This has got to be the worse time to be stuck with such a HORRIBLE do nothing (just like his Senate record) President!

"Instead of the daily personal attacks and insults from the right, I'd love to hear their solutions or ideas for improving society and in turn this country." The reason is that the have no ideas, John Bonnner said as much recently. They dont want to govern because then they might be held accountable. They have no leaders to speak of except Limbaugh and Sarah Palin. Both are more mascots than real leaders. Think Freedom Fries!

"I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday," Barton said. "I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown, in this case a $20 billion shakedown." Talking directly to Hayward, Barton added, "I apologize. I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong, is subject to some sort of political pressure that is, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize." Regressive Representative Joe Barton (R-Tex). And you wonder why people have such a low opinion of Republicans.

What was yesterday about? It was a $20 billion shakedown of BP - with Obama now controlling the checkbook! And when our government controls anything - the money is never enough!! More, more, more is all Democrats know. BP will be paying and paying for God only knows what before all is said and done. Obama will have the unemployed cleaning up oil, the unions will get a huge chunk, and all the while Obama can push Cap & Trade and bash the big, bad oil companies at the same time. Obama hit the trifecta with this one.
