I recommended doing things like this back in 2005. Did anybody listen? Well, Comcast, obviously, but did anybody around here? (By the way, if you're not a fan of the The700Level,com by now, you should be.)
Yes, this is part of a trend:
In a possible sign of shifting industry dynamics, the New York Times launched regional supplements to its San Francisco and Chicago editions, drawing on the work of well-financed donor-sponsored startups. Similarly, ESPN launched regional sites in Chicago, Boston, Dallas and Los Angeles, challenging papers there for dominance in sports reporting. The Wall Street Journal is rolling out regional supplements as well and increasing its local coverage of New York City.
But if this is, as it appears, a case of well-off national media lions (and some new media challengers) feasting on sickly antelopes, watch for many metros to fight back in 2010. Already, for example, the Seattle Times has responded to the rich collection of neighborhood Web sites in that city by partnering with and aggregating 19 of them.
No reason why that couldn't happen here. Is there?
Yes, this is an open thread, so please ignore what I just wrote and scream "socialism!" and "it was all Bush's fault!" at each other for the rest of the day.
Socialism! It was all Bush's fault! Bu seriously, why aren't more papers doing this? Makes complete sense to me to link hyperlocal news gathering sites to a larger, better-known news site. bcmojo
"so please ignore what I just wrote and scream "socialism!" and "it was all Bush's fault!" at each other for the rest of the day." That's pretty rich coming from a guy who spends more time writing about the long-gone Bush Admin than he does about the transgressions of the currently in-power Obama Admin and the Dems in Congress. db_cooper

Will, I usually disagree with your positions, but I agree with your observation about "Bush's fault" and "socialism". Many of the folks on here veer far off topic to espouse their various agendas. And the hatefulness in some comments is embarassing. Hey, I'm as anti-Obama AND anti-Bush as the next guy - perhaps the next TWO guys, but can we leave the name calling and personal remarks out of here? On the other hand, the dailies are really having a tough time with the 'net. But, times change. There is no longer a Roman forum but ideas manage to be exchanged anyway. Mark Glaeser
"That's because the Bush Administration did more to damage this nation in 8 years than any other POTUS, besides Reagan, in our country's history. " Ah, no partisanship in that comment. Beyond that, the Bush Admin is long gone. Meanwhile, serious corruption is happening amongst the Dems in Congress - so you don't care about that? Will used to care when it was Republicans... db_cooper

So, now that HCR is about to pass, I am wondering if the world will stop spinning now or there will be some kind of cataclysm. The haters here have been whining for about a year and now that it is about to be passed I am wondering what Swift"veteran", bill atk, and others expect to happen...I mean other than the fact that if someone in their family faces catastrophic illness they will be able to keep/get their insurance...even if they lose their jobs. Will the earth open up and swallow great swathes of land when 30 million+ people will now be able to get reasonable health insurance? And a few years from now, when the deficit begins to fall in large part due to the fiscal sanity of those bold enough to be on the right side of history, will we see the end of the world as we know it?...Or for just those haters who have tried to stop this for no good reason.
