MLB throws $1 million in good publicity back on the field

POSTED: Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 7:45 PM

OK, this isn't the biggest crisis facing America or anything, but does anyone else think it's knee-jerk stupidity on the part of Major League Baseball to yank the dad-and-little-girl foul ball video off of YouTube and surely hundreds of blogs and news Web sites across the country? I understand why MLB defends its copyright to the death -- for game action, etc. But this is a Norman Rockwell-eque video showing a family having a great experience at a ballpark -- so of course some braindead executive squishes it like a bug. Do they realize that companies like McDonald's spend millions to invent phony moments like that one?

By the way, I just made up that $1 million figure -- but I hear that making up numbers in the millions is all the rage these days.

Why does Will love this story so much? I dont get it? Its a non story. Father catches a foul ball, gives to his daughter, she throws it back, father thinks its cute, so does the rest of America... great big deal. MLB takes its copyrighted material off other websites, but it is still free to see on mlb sites... great. Will can you please get back on your liberal soap box. At least then while providing a totally slanted viewpoint, he's at least talking about real, sometimes important news (when it isnt him sobbing about the death of newspapaers).

You liberals ought to be proud of Emily for throwing the ball away. She was redistributing her wealth...

No other commissioner would have been stupid enough to shut down this video for public viewing. Bud Selig is a joke of a figurehead for baseball. He should be replaced. He wouldn't know good PR if it bit him on his a**.

    a) As said already: Why give all that web traffic to youtube? B) My guess is that if they didn't pull it off it would set precedent that could be used against them in the future. C) Dick Cheney tortures innocent people!!!

I'm sick of the whole video. I watched it. Big deal. The little girl throws the ball back into the field. All Comcast does the whole game is show shots of the stands. Just show the field. No cares about their artsy-fartsy fan reactions. During the Sixers games they spend half the time showing kids in 76ers logo wear.

Now YouTube has more room for more Shawn Andrews videos. Now that he's on IR, there's gonna be alot more Andrews rap videos, so many that YouTube may crash. Maybe someday we will find out if Andy Reid ever gets his Michael Phelps on?

I want to know the rest of the story - where did the ball land? did someone catch it or did someone get bonked? did s/he offer to give it back? doesn't this beat the world news?

Poor swifto, just can't help yourself, can you. If I had to guess who would make an assinine comment not associated with the topic at hand, I would have guessed you. I'm right again.

Uh,.. yea, it's not that big a deal, you can still see it (for free) on mlb.com. What's all the fuss? As revsmokin said, it's a good business move and no one really misses out. Getting all excited about nothing here.

So let's see... now everyone who wants to see the video has to go to phillies.com and mlb.com, where people can still see it for free, but now MLB gets all the web hits instead of Youtube. I mean, I'm a fellow liberal and all, but even I know a good business move when I see it. Why let Youtube get the attention when you can get all those web hits instead? It makes sense.

MSNBC reporting- "Dick Cheney caught the ball the little girl threw and refused to give it back last night."--------------------------------------------It's been 28 hours 50 minutes and 15 seconds since Vice President Cheney refused to give the ball back......

Right 'cause they aren't getting enough publicity already? Video's still everywhere (from Yahoo, which is of course YouTube/Google's rival, and MLB itself)
