Lighting a fire

Jose Feliciano performed a rockin' version of the Star Spangled Banner tonight before the first game of the National League Championship Series (sigh) in San Francisco. It felt like closing a loop to watch it. In my first year as a baseball fan -- 1968, when I was 9 -- Feliciano was asked to sing the National Anthem before the World Series at Detroit's Tiger Stadium, and when he did his soulful, very non-tradional version, it caused a national uproar. This was the year of the RFK and MLK assassinations, the Tet offensive, and riots at the Democratic convention in Chicago, and now people thought the counter-culture was invading baseball. Nothing was safe!
You can read the fairly amazing backstory here. Now it's 2012, and no one says "boo" about the same version. A sign that we've come a long way, baby. Or is it...just San Francisco being San Francisco. The final bizarre kicker is that I suspect the Cardinals and Tigers will meet again in the World Series -- a 1968 re-match.
Programming note: I'm taking a well-deserved day off tomorrow. See you Tuesday for Debate Night in America.
"but there is a sodomized and murdered ambassador the begs to differ" . . . . Actually there are Islamic jihadists who beg to differ. I say keep begging. Why give them the comfort of thinking they've dealt us a major blow, and serve their propaganda, just to score cheap political points at home? Keep in mind, the metaphor "bump in the road" was used by Bush Admin officials to describe several setbacks in Iraq, by Condi Rice and Paul Bremer among others, so as to not betray US resolve in its mission. montani semper liberi
"Actually there are Islamic jihadists who beg to differ."
So it wasn't a spontaneous protest by members of the Islamic faith, over a movie? You leftwing fruitbats really do have a hard time keeping your story straight don't you. Whatever mdedcine your on, you've most likely built a tolerence and you will be needing to up your dosage. Phishface
Phish care to mention the source of your "there is a sodomized and murdered ambassador"? Yeah, that's what I thought, scumbag. "Except there was no protest, which the State Dept has already admitted...why are you still trying to peddle the BS protest story that's been 100% debinked, murry? You're a lowlife, fraud." I don't have the other source, other than the Economist, but eyewitness accounts of the attack clearly indicated there were individuals outside the gates shouting "down with America" and "God is great". Yes, they made no mention of the people outside the gate referring to the film. Nonetheless, there was clearly a diversion. Not long after the attacks began. The Libyan eyewitnesses had stated that not long after, they clearly saw the black flag of An$ar a1 Sharia. But once again we have a chaotic situation needing to be investigated before drawing reasonable conclusions. But don't let that stop the ever-extreme right wing from making wild accusations, including their nominee, who has stated the response was akin to an apology, and (from Rush) the response is the Obama admin. "giving the te55orists a pass". This is the same reaction we got from the extreme left-wing types who have, in the years proceeding the events, use the clip of the FDNY member saying, "explosions" and "sounds like a bomb" to suggest there were explosive devices used in the WTC towers. Murrayman
Rx free, phish. What, uh, "medicine" you on? What medicine you on when you're watching TV in the middle of a work day? Whats the known side effect of your, eh, "medicine"? Yeah. Paranoia. I can keep the story straight any way you need it but keep in mind -- I'm going to source the left-wing media bias types not fringe blogos qouting Lebanese sources. Murrayman
Oh, and look here. Romney's initial release: "It's disgraceful that the Obama administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks." The Obama admin. had initially sympathized with the protestors. Coulter, Rush, Carlson, Napolitano, and others, hailed this response by Romney. Except, of course that the protestors hadn't attacked. Was it walked back? Of course not. They want weaklings like bp and phish to think there was sympathy for the attackers. And of course there is evidence it is bought into. Its deception and politics masked as journalism. And phish and friends buy into it. Murrayman
"But don't let that stop the ever-extreme right wing from making wild accusations,..."
And your ever-extreme reaction has been to obfuscate and deflect the reality of what actually happened. There were no protests, period. There was no diversion, period. It was a full-on assault. But for some reason, the Admin felt it necessary to completely make up an account as to avoid terming it a "terrorsit attack."
Notice how murry has now moved from claiming that there were protests (which my link to an AP article clearly states was NOT the case as per the State Dept's updated account), to now trying to turn this into a discussion about Romney's reaction.
Like I said, you're a lowlife, fraud, murry. Plain and simple. bp*philly
Murray,
"Coulter, Rush, Carlson, Napolitano, " you left out cnn, the new york times and cbs news. Oh, and also the Koch brothers, the Marx Brothers and 7 brothers for seven wives and the tea party and sarah palin etc. etc. ad nauseum. See you on I-95 Phishface
Bp,
Good post. Lest we forget how far the regime went to continue the false flag narrative by raiding the so called film makers home and arresting him Phishface
In other words, the extreme right wingers here, phish specifically, assign a god complex to the administration -- they should know all immediately. The extreme left did it to the Bush admin. in the wake of 9/11. All information should have been known all at once -- if not, they'll look to exploit it politically. bp, for instance, turns 'there were no protests that day' into 'there were no protests, period'. The admin., needing to make a statement, should have been able to immediately divine the situation - no investigation, nothing. Yet eyewitnesses state they saw groups of people outside the compound in the moments before the attack, shouting protests. Okay so it wasn't like the Cairo protests, or protests that had occurred in Benghazi. Perhaps it wasn't even a diversion. But it sure seems like it lulled the security. There was no reaction until the attack. "False flag narrative" - the idea any sober person has any idea what your paranoid delusion means is just obnoxious. Murrayman
"Like I said, you're a lowlife, fraud, murry. Plain and simple." Day after day, you bring your nonsense to this site, and its exposed as the delusional, politically motivated drivel it is. Murrayman
"But once again we have a chaotic situation needing to be investigated before drawing reasonable conclusions."
Murry, the resident foresnic analyst knows best, so we should all listen to his account of things. After all, it's a totally reasonable conclusion to draw that a youtube video roused a group of militants so much that they brought AK-47's and RPG's and then doused the consulate with fuel before setting it ablaze in a well-organized and concerted effort.
You're an idiot, murry. But the worst is, is that you really think people buy your BS. You're a democrat troll...nothing more, nothing less. bp*philly
"Day after day, you bring your nonsense to this site, and its exposed as the delusional, politically motivated drivel it is."
Yet here you are, cliaming that the attack was started with a protest. Forget about the fact that the admin now denies ever even blaming the video. Forget about the fact that the State Dept has now conceded there were no protests. Forget about the fact that Stevens and his team asked , but were denied added security.
You're actually countering and denying what the State Dept has acknowledged took place, simply because it makes Obama look bad, and you;re on here claiming others are delusional?!?
You need to march yourself over to the nearest reflective surface and take a long hard look if you want to what delusional looks like.
You're a complete joke at this point, murry. Cartoonish even... bp*philly
"But it sure seems like it lulled the security."
Wait a minute...you're seriously trying to tell us that a protest, something inherently dangerous in that region, "lulled" the security forces?!?! Talk about completely counter-intuitive and utterly insulting to anyone with a brain...where might you have gleaned this info, murry?
All this time I just thought you were an arrogant blowhard. Sadly, it turns out you're just f-ing reet@rded. bp*philly
"The Era of Stupidity was from 2001-2009 when Republicans controlled all three branches of government for six long years. It will take atleast that long to dig out of the hole they left".
MORE LIB STUPIDITY-
Stupidity began in '06 and boomed in the election of '08 and has only gotten bigger!! If you weren't stupid enough to ignore the truth you would know that this country did very well despite the worst attack in the nation's history, something Libs never talk about..LOL, until after 6 years when Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al took over and continued their mantra of pretending there was no housing bubble and everything was just fine!!!
