I'm a tad under the weather (not from celebrating the Phillies, unfortunately), so light blogging, perhaps non-existent blogging the rest of the day. I was rather struck, though, by the story about Sarah Palin's future son-in-law in the paper today:
Johnston said he was a little shocked when he learned about the pregnancy but said he quickly embraced the prospects of fatherhood. The baby is due Dec. 18. Johnston has dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician.
I don't know -- am I just an arugula-eating elitist for finding it a tad troubling that in the "world-is-flat" 21st Century there just seems to be little urgency in Palin's orbit about higher education, among her children or her husband and now even her in-laws? It was worrisome enough when Palin couldn't name a magazine or newspaper that she reads. Maybe she could at least lobby Levi Johnston to stay in school?
UPDATE: Just to clarify, as suggested by the comments, yes, we do need electricians -- it's just that the story implies his dropping out is the result of impending fatherhood, not because his lifelong career goal was to be an electrician.

Who cares, it's his life. This interview was deliberately timed to distract, and you've fallen right into the trap. Politburo
The guy might not be cut out for higher education. No shame in blue collar work. However, as a country I think we need to place more value on education. RG
Johnston is doing the honorable thing. He is taking responsibility for his actions, and finding a way to provide for his family. He is learning a trade. What part of that is bad? jfar86

I told you you couldn't do it. (go 2 days without using the word Palin). You, sir, are truly obsessed. Bud Fox- Especially in Alaska. What's someone in Alaska going to do with a pantywaist English degree? Starve. But at least he can quote Yeats while he starves his family. Mr. Smith
and yes, just to answer your rhetorical question Will- you are an arugula eating elitist (for many reasons, not just this post). the irony is that you look down on someone becoming an electrician, but they as a group electricians probably make more money than you thanks to your pro-union positions. Bud Fox- "What part of that is bad?" . . . . Nothing really, so long as it's understood that he's no role model for young Americans.
Who needs education? With his connections to the Palin family (as long as he doesn't get them mad at him), he'll probably become Alaska's next Secretary of State. SteveMG- Once and a while, liberals cut through the mumbo-jumbo and really reveal themselves. Will is troubled by a man getting up off his rear end and take responsibility for his actions, especially given the fact that liberals have fought hard for him and his girlfriend to abort that kid and take care of number one. Nice. jmc
didn't the left's favorite socialist, I mean artist (Bruce Springsteen) immortalize this in his song The River? Lyrics: "Then I got Mary Pregnant and man that was all she wrote, And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat"? Bud Fox
Liberals have also faught hard for women who have been brutally raped. Palin and McCain want your government to force the victim to go full term. Nice. pagoda
