Joe Lieberman's Vietnam hypocrisy

Sen. Joe Lieberman, everybody's favorite Future Republican from Connecticut, had a stunning op-ed in the Wall Street Journal blaming all the perceived woes of his supposed-but-not-really Democratic Party on its supposed weakness in foreign policy that dates back, in his rambling and largely unsupported thesis, to the Vietnam War. He writes:

And this was the Democratic Party of John F. Kennedy, who promised in his inaugural address that the United States would "pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of freedom."

This worldview began to come apart in the late 1960s, around the war in Vietnam. In its place, a very different view of the world took root in the Democratic Party. Rather than seeing the Cold War as an ideological contest between the free nations of the West and the repressive regimes of the communist world, this rival political philosophy saw America as the aggressor – a morally bankrupt, imperialist power whose militarism and "inordinate fear of communism" represented the real threat to world peace.

Lieberman's piece is incoherent and/or illogical in a number of ways -- for example, in end the critical battleground against the Soviets was in Afghanistan, under a confrontational policy that begins with one Democrat, Jimmy Carter. and was funded by another, Charlie Wilson. And it's odd that in hanging his entire thesis on Vietnam as a turning point, he barely mentions that war or where it fits in.

Maybe because that's because Joe Lieberman was ultimately one of those dirty freakin' hippies against the war, a fact that he downplays on his resume. As the Boston Globe noted in an article published on Dec. 7, 2003 (via Nexis):

The conclusion: Action in defense of security is a moral imperative.

In his college years, Lieberman chided "peace groups" in print for inadequate support of President Kennedy's dealings with the Soviet Union. He initially supported the Vietnam War, then changed his mind in late 1967, when he decided it was "the wrong place to be." He has firmly backed every military action since then: Grenada, Libya, Panama, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and both Gulf wars. He pushed legislation ordering efforts to oust Saddam Hussein three years before the Sept. 11 attacks.

On one hand, I happen to agree with Lieberman's conclusion: Vietnam was clearly the wrong place to be, just as Iraq is a couple of generations later. Isn't it interesting, though, that with all the military conflicts that Joe Lieberman has supported over the years, that -- after concluding that "action in defense of security is a moral imperative" -- the only war he ever opposed was THE ONLY WAR HE MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE HAD TO FIGHT IN.

Of course, Joe Lieberman didn't have to fight in Vietnam -- like his new ally Dick Cheney he had "other priorities" in the 1960s. He received two deferments, one to attend college and law school at Yale, the second because he was married with a young child by the time he finished school in 1967. The deferments ensured that Lieberman would live --so he could vote to send younger men off to those other wars that he later supported. You've heard of getting rich with "other people's money," but for Joe Lieberman combat is apparently "other people's moral imperative."

RE: "Lieberman's piece is incoherent and/or illogical in a number of ways -- for example, in end the critical battleground against the Soviets was in Afghanistan,..." Actually, Lieberman himself is incoherent. But, be that as it may, the critical battleground against the Soviets was actually in Europe, both Eastern and Western. Whether or not the Soviets were militarily sucessful in Afghanistan in the late 1970s would not have marginally changed the balance of power. They had to win Europe to win the world, and this they did not do...and the rest is history.

Lieberman is a disgrace (not his support of Republicans, but his support of any & all wars), showing yet again that the election of 2000 had the two worst VP candidates of all time. The Dems HAVE to put up with him, no matter what he does, for another 6 months --- & he knows it. You can bet the Ranch that he'll be cut off at the knees & be shipped off to Siberia once the Dems get more votes in the Senate.

He supported the Vietnam War until it was his turn to fight and then opposed it? So he's been a Republican since 1967? Except that now they support wars and still won't fight in them. What a bunch of cowards Repubs are.

You also forgot that to mention that JL is a quasi-Hillary fan and is not a supporter of Barack Obama. That automatically means no brownie points from Willy. So no friend of Obama means there HAS to be something terribly wrong with someone -- morally, politically, and even socially. We don't even have to read between the lines....

shoeboy, lieberman is a farce no matter whom he might support. lieberman is for lieberman, period. Talk about a shameless shill. The man has no class and no character. Thanks to republican intervention in Conn, he is back in the senate when his own party had had enough of him.

Lieberman is a putz, But seriously, because he didn't fight in Vietnam it invalidates some of his opinions?

One of these days, Will, you're going to learn that when you use Republican/Rovian talking points you lose the high ground.

I wonder what Lieberman thinks of McCains "judgement" of having his campaign staffed by lobbyists who represented dictators like those in Myanmar, Zaire, Nigeria, Somalia, etc.? Can these windbags be any more hyocritical? www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24769387/

Why does philly.com call this "Fresh Voices" - we get the same old thing every day from Will The Shill...

I wonder if Liebs even bothered to send this to more respectable op-ed pages like WaPo before heading to the right-wing lair of the WSJ.. probably not. I doubt any other paper would have published it.

"By the way,did you serve ?".....Guess someone needs to highlight the point being made, since obviously you don't get it....It's not about serving or not serving, it's about chickenhawk cowards with a bad case of war lust, like "no-show" Chimp, that dick "five deferment" Cheney, and Joe "Droopy Dog" Lieberman. It's much easier to send other people to slaughter than to have some guts yourself, as our "leaders" have proven by their cowardice over their wasted lifetime.

Wonder which Democrats will get thrown under the bus for failing to heed the marching orders of Mark Soros? With friends like dems who needs enemies?

Hey Vol and Xi: Lieberman is underserving of any respect and deserving of our contempt. He is a coward and morally bankrupt, a kind of Cheney in political drag. Makes me wonder what the electorate who put this worthless dung heap in office are drinking. I say this as an Independent who believes there are Dems and Republicans who want to do the right thing and have a conscience. Joe L. has neither.

Basically what Will is saying is in 40 years since opposing the war in Vietnam Joe Lieberman is not allowed to grow as a person and change his opinion on US foreign policy. Will even goes so far as to basically call the senator a coward for opposing a war he could fight in and embracing one he could not possibly serve in. In making his points Will evokes the fine foreign policy and presidency of Jimmy Carter… seriously? Jimmy Carter? Perhaps if Sen. Lieberman spoke of Hope and Change and Change and Hope and Hope for Change and with Change we find Hope.. perhaps then Will would cut him a break and treat him with the same respect he gives a guy that has yet to serve a full term in the US Senate.
