Jim Bunning's Imperfect Game -- today's "5 Minutes Over Attytood"

On June 21, 1964, in New York, Jim Bunning was perfect. On March 1, 2010, in Washington, the ex-Phillie-turned-GOP-senator is as far from perfect as you can get. This picture above shows unemployed Americans in baseball uniforms trying to talk some sense into the aging Philadelphia sports legend:
Two thousand federal transportation workers will be furloughed without pay on Monday, and the Obama administration said they have a Kentucky senator to blame for it.
Federal reimbursements to states for highway programs will also be halted, the Transportation Department said in a statement late Sunday. The reimbursements amount to about $190 million a day, according to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The furloughs and freeze on payments were the result of a decision last week by Republican Sen. Jim Bunning to block passage of legislation that would have extended federal highway and transit programs, the department said. Those programs expired at midnight Sunday.
Bunning also fanned unemployment benefits for about 400,000 Americans. He has brought great dishonor on the name of the Philadelphia Phillies, and when a franchise has more than 10,000 losses, that is hard to do! It's today's open thread. Discuss things!
Hey Will...I think you missed the point about Bunning's objection. Your party adopted pay as you go on legislation, and the Dems do not have this paid for, so Jim Bunning is just wanting them to follow their own rules. He is not on the ballot in November, so he is just doing what is right. Always a pleasure to correct your spin Will. Bush3

Uh, as even Polman notes. Bunning is so far down the rabbit hole even the GOP considered him "unfit" to run. But I'm sure there's an even more radical percentage of the Whacko 24 that thinks this guy and Sarah Palin should breed and create Uber-Bag. enabler1
Bush 3, that's the point. Ds are hypocritical. They like to boast about supporting paygo, but don't implement it. What a joke. If they want these bills passed, they have to cut other programs or raise taxes (or some combination). They haven't the guts to do either, because the cuts will hurt some of their constituents and a tax raise now in this down economy would would enrage taxpayers even more than they are now with this administration and its toadies in the House and Senate. What world does Bunch live in? We can't just keep printing money. pj katauskas
Bunning is doing what is right. Someone is going to have to pay for this deficit. ALJ- Some printing of money is necessary when the country is barely recovering from a terrible recession. Sorry to inform Senator Bunning's supporters, but deficit spending has been a tool to spur lagging industrial economies for many decades now. After a recent Republican president ran up a massive deficit when there was no need (except to further pay off the nation's millionaires), the current Democratic president is to be forgiven for printing some money when it IS needed. Democrats are not hypocritical -- they're just trying to cope with the long aftershocks of Republican mismanagement.
