Jilted Glenn Beck tells nation: "Philadelphia is not a place you want to be"

POSTED: Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 10:50 AM

Glenn Beck's comments about Philly are ...
right on
sour grapes

As noted here earler, this is the week that Philadelphia cleaned up its airwaves, purging Glenn Beck as well as Sean Hannity from the radio here. (Beck was also dumped in New York City.) The king of all far-right media supposedly had a soft spot for Philly -- it was living here and broadcasting from WPHT out on City Line Avenue that Beck built his nationwide radio audience in the early-to-mid 2000s.

But now that we're not listening, he told the rest of America what he really thinks of us. "Philadelphia sucks," Beck declares at the end of today's rant, which is focused on his notion -- and feel free to debate this, as I know you will -- that it's not safe to walk around the City of Brotherly Love at 6 p.m. (6 p.m.?) without getting robbed or shot. But rather than me characterizing what Beck said about Philadelphia, listen for yourself:

Do you think Glenn Beck still broadcasts to Philadelphia's suburbs? Sorry, Shultz; Beck hates you too. This isn't "Philly vs. Cherry Hill". Glenn has never heard of Cherry Hill. In his book, it's all Philly.

It sort of depends on how you define "Philadelphia." I grew up there and I have lived all over and still think that Philadelphia is a great place to live. I wouldn't live in North Philly or Kingsessing, though. You might love LA but wouldn't live in Compton; you might love DC, but wouldn't live in Anacostia. Where DOES Beck live? Far rural Connecticut, behind 6-foot walls. Like Chester County. (No offense.)

Philly is not the only city with those problems, but because we have less space than cities like NY and Chicago the problems are more prominent and reported about. Perhaps L.Bell should provide a solution to the cities problems instead of complaining and calling it a dump.

After having taught, and I repeat TAUGHT in the School District of Philadelphia for five years (yes, my scores DID go up, with help from my SCHOOL and the COMMUNITY) I just want to say that the mentality that North Philly is 'hopeless' is exactly the cause of its state. Open your eyes and see that those are actual people and children living there, not just statistics. People who deserve dignity and respect, and not just a jilt from the safety of your own computer screen.

Sounds like someone who reads a few news articles and thinks they know what they are talking about. But hey, if opinions like this, keep A-holes like 1776.Liberty.Bell out of the city, then that's great!

As exemplified by the grammar in your post, you clearly believe education to be a lost cause. Also, pretty tough talk about a town you don't even live in nor are barely near.

I understand you all rushing to defend your city, but rather than avoiding the issues and accusing the guy of all sorts of crimes, like living in Bucks county, exactly what part of what that guy said about Philly is not true? Other than being crazy to live here, of course. I choose to live in the city. It's got serious issues, but it's also got plenty going for it. It's close to NYC and DC, it's got some nice restaurants and, it's by far the most affordable of all the big cities. Although, let's face it, there's a pretty good reason for that.

The others here have spoken well about Philly. Has all the problems big cities have but has a very rich history and is in far better shape then other large cities (Detroit and Pittsburgh come to mind). I've chosen to live and raise my children in this city for a goodly portion of my life and I am originally from the wealthier suburbs. I've lived and worked in NYC, Portland ME, Boston, rural PA, York PA, VA, and even lived and worked in Germany for an extended period. I am one of those 1.5 million people that call Philly home and are reasonably proud of it. Some of the politicians could go away, some of the columnists and some of the commentators who seem bent on publicly displaying their ignorance.

If I had a couple hundred million dollars in my bank account, I might relocate from Philly as well....

Yeah - Cliff Lee's a real fruitcake. Either that, or he probably just can't afford to live anywhere else.

    --snip--

We got to see Lee back on Philly soil, back in a red cap. And now, we get to see him with a Philadelphia address.

According to The Daily News’ gossip monger Dan Gross, Lee is setting up permanently (or as permanent as real estate is) in the city.

I hardly think citing a baseball player who is making so much money he can afford to live in the swankiest block of the city, part-time no less, serves as a good example as to whether Philadelphia is a good place to live or not. Just saying.

Further, Lee's permanent residence is in Arkansas, not Philadelphia.
