Jilted Glenn Beck tells nation: "Philadelphia is not a place you want to be"

POSTED: Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 10:50 AM

Glenn Beck's comments about Philly are ...
right on
sour grapes

As noted here earler, this is the week that Philadelphia cleaned up its airwaves, purging Glenn Beck as well as Sean Hannity from the radio here. (Beck was also dumped in New York City.) The king of all far-right media supposedly had a soft spot for Philly -- it was living here and broadcasting from WPHT out on City Line Avenue that Beck built his nationwide radio audience in the early-to-mid 2000s.

But now that we're not listening, he told the rest of America what he really thinks of us. "Philadelphia sucks," Beck declares at the end of today's rant, which is focused on his notion -- and feel free to debate this, as I know you will -- that it's not safe to walk around the City of Brotherly Love at 6 p.m. (6 p.m.?) without getting robbed or shot. But rather than me characterizing what Beck said about Philadelphia, listen for yourself:

USAFirst1's plan is to teach mind-numbing slogans w/ a healthy dose of self-preservation aided by box stores followed by forced prayer. Target practice @ 3.These colors don't run.

I agree with USAFirst1. The Democratic stronghold on elected city offices will keep Phila. from becoming a world class city. These elected officials don't care about the city. They care about their power and that's it. So Phila. voters keep putting these people in office and Phila. will be the next Camden. It's well on it's way. And I do have to say that it's interesting that the liberals have gotten the conservative viewpoint taken off the airways in Phila. Were they afraid that people listening would realize how the liberals are trying to take over their lives? The truth hurts them so get rid of the truth!

Not too bright, are you, USAFirst1? Reduce taxes AND improve city services? Yeah, that same libertarian dream world that exists in the beautiful resort of... Somalia!

No libraries, no recreation, no parks -- yep, sounds like a world-class city to me. You just go back to sleep now, we'll wake you when the apocalypse comes.

Of course Glenn Beck thinks Philadelphia sucks. In his world, the only real, good honest patriotic Americans live in the Bible Belt and the Midwest.

Cities are bad because minorities and Democrats live there.

Last I heard, the Midwest had cities too. I'm pretty sure the Northeast doesn't have that market cornered.

Patty, ask the Buckster here the order of American presidents. He knows midwest cities AND presidents. It's really quite impressive.

Does TPS have a day job? I really don't care about Beck. Bunch, do you live in the city? Depends on which part of the city, if you're walking around center city, i think you'll be fine. North Philly, Kensington are different stories...

I would NOT want to be in the woods of Alabama or Mississippi at 6pm. Considering my olive skin, I think that "real America" might not appreciate my "values". The funny (and/or scary) thing about Beck is that I don't even think he means what he says half the time. He just found a hustle a la Howard Stern and figured out that he could make millions saying certain things. But the real funny (and/or scary) thing is idiotic people support and worship him. I will take Philly any day of the week over at least 95% of "real" America.

Barry O - I think you nailed it. Beck does a political schtick and people give him way too much attention. The left actually want to see Jon Stewart take on Beck - clueless that Stewart's program is just schtick too.

As to Philly, it's my home and I love it. Not that I couldn't be persuaded to move to Clearwater Beach on days like today.

I don't get it, this summer, the Beatles (aka, The Phour Aces) are playing 81 times in our city. More than NY or LA. The next 5 years very well could be the "golden era" of Philadelphia. Eff you Glenn Beck, go live in Texas.

This is just the latest lie that Beck is spouting. There's no issue with walking around center city and Independance Hall in the evening. Philadelphia has different areas that are very different from one another. I wouldn't walk around sections of North and West Philadelphia during the day. If you've traveled much, you know that most large cities in the world have bad neighborhoods. There are unsafe sections of Paris. A few cities are safe any time and neighborhood. Toronto comes to my mind. But most aren't. But I would agree that if you ranked all large cities in the world for safety, Philadelphia would be in the bottom half.
