As noted here earler, this is the week that Philadelphia cleaned up its airwaves, purging Glenn Beck as well as Sean Hannity from the radio here. (Beck was also dumped in New York City.) The king of all far-right media supposedly had a soft spot for Philly -- it was living here and broadcasting from WPHT out on City Line Avenue that Beck built his nationwide radio audience in the early-to-mid 2000s.
But now that we're not listening, he told the rest of America what he really thinks of us. "Philadelphia sucks," Beck declares at the end of today's rant, which is focused on his notion -- and feel free to debate this, as I know you will -- that it's not safe to walk around the City of Brotherly Love at 6 p.m. (6 p.m.?) without getting robbed or shot. But rather than me characterizing what Beck said about Philadelphia, listen for yourself:
- I'd be afraid to walk around Tucson at any time.
nebulus - LOL---he pays more in taxes that Will makes in five years---LMAO---Philadelphia is one more election cycle away from being Detroit II---one party systems suck, regardless of whether they are left or right---same as Will's blog---one side, finite audience---as my handle indicates---the left is for losers who cannot pull themselves away from Mommy's teat and only want help---Just like Will---who needs the Inky more than most teenage Moms from Philly need financial assistance
most_of_the_commentors_here_are_losers - your name speaks it all and clearly you've chosen YOUR name well. I just chuckle when I see knuckleheads trying to compare Philly to Detroit. If you check ALL the stats you will find that Philly is actually a decade or two away from being Detroit assuming it resumes its way down a similar path. Philly is bigger, richer, has higher employment, higher per capita income, higher median income, higher housing value, more diverse population though also more white (percentage wise), has better schools ..... AND glen beck pays more in taxes than a lot of people partially because he rips people off with his gold company and partially because people are willing to believe his inflammatory rhetoric and lies. And because there will always be knuckleheads like m_of_c_hr_r_lsrs.
nebulus - :)---isn't it nice that you can casually use the words "rips people off" with no worry?---you have no proof, other than that angry vitriolic left wing hate speech disguised as intellectual banter---LMAO---yet you make an accusation neither you nor your mother can prove---As for me being a knucklehead, maybe, maybe not---but over the last thirty years, there has been one party rule here in my hometown---much like Detroit---and it doesn't work---argue all you want---Chester, Montgomery, Bucks, and the other surrounding counties work---because they have two viable parties---not a corrupt, bigoted, hateful army of the Democrats like Spendell, Fumo, and the like
most_of_the_commentors_here_are_losers - You hate Philadelphia, and you hate the Philly.com comment threads, but here you are. You're a self-hating Philadelphian.
- I'm curious, sleuth. If it's common knowledge that the right is violent and all the violence stems from Beck telling people what to do, why then should Beck be afraid to walk anywhere?
And yes, he is a paranoid conspiracy freak. He once had this wacky theory that despite being the 3rd most listened to show in the country that he'd somehow be censored by closed minded people who feared anyone who disagrees with them.
Boy, what a whacko, huh? smfree31
As a man of a conservative mindset, I won't miss that sobbing baby for one second. Greg V.
Philadelphia is a dump. Unemployment 11.2% & it's really much higher than that. Most of North Philadelphia is ghetto and really should be knocked down. Philly Schools Face Up To $430M Deficit and the school doesn't even teach. Taxes are way too high. The youth of the city has turn into packs with flash mobs destroying neighborhoods. You would have to be crazy to want to live in Philadelphia. 1776.Liberty.Bell- There's well over 1,000,000 people that disagree. My guess--you live in chester county...maybe upper bucks. You've been in philadelphia a few times, formed an uneducated opinion and read all of the negative news every day. Probably divorced and miserable. But hey, if dumping on 1.3 million people's home town makes you feel better, have at it.
- Mustache: Completely agree with your sentiments about the Bell boy, and consider that Glenn Beck's opinion on Philly is on a par with his opinions about most other things. But please note: I live in the heart of Chester County and travel frequently, with pleasure and at many different times of day, to all kinds of neighborhoods in Philly -- Germantown, South Philly, West Philly, Fishtown, Old City, even Kensington. So while some of the haters may live in Chester and Bucks, not all the Chester and Bucks residents are haters.
- You make the assumption that 1 million people here have the ability to move if they so desire. Many people are here because they can not make a change whether it be for financial or personal reasons. My guess is that the majority of those 1 million have never lived elsewhere. To argue that Philly is a great place to live is most likely attributed to delusion or perhaps lack of experience outside those big scary city walls. BTW, I find Beck as repulsive as the next guy.
no10leclair - point taken, but you could aruge that just as many people wouldn't and haven't left. every major city has issues. We have our own. My point is some people want paint Philadelphia with a broad stroke of attrocity when in reality--and most people who LIVE HERE will attest--that its a great place to live. And yes, I understand that kensington, kingsessing, WP and NP have rough spots, but there are great places too.
- The people who don't want to leave are those who destroy the city and wait for their monthly handout at the welfare office. It's a whole way of life for them!
cpepe - Speak for yourself! I spent ten years in the most loathsome city on Earth: NEW YORK CITY. It is an illogical corporatist's dream, inhabited by ignorant and cold barely human people. I have also traveled the world from every State to mainland China. My wife is Japanese. All in all, I would rather be in Philly, so I finally moved back two months ago.
Philly is a great city, and the world would be a better place without the right-wingnut conservatives, or pretend patriots like Beck, cashing in on people's hatred and bigotry. Good riddance Glenn.
