I woke up this morning, and there was a sharp chill in the post-dawn gloaming. Today is the worst day of the year. Always is. It's not just that the Phillies came up disappointingly short in their once-in-a-lifetime chance to take down the universally reviled Yankees -- thought there is that. The end of every baseball season is depressing -- I even felt a bit that way last year, even though the Phillies had just won the World Series; because victory still meant an empty ballpark for the winter, the loss of the cherished warm summer ritual. Why do you think God invented Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve? -- His desperate attempt to get we mortals over the hump of a frigid, tree-dead, baseball-less winter. It's still not enough, O Lord.

It's hard to know what to say about the Series. It's clear after these six games and also the three regular-season matches that the Yanks and Phils are the two best teams in baseball, and evenly matched -- were it not for the Phillies' problems with Brad Lidge and Cole Hamels. But were it not for Lidge and Hamels, the Phillies wouldn't be our Phillies, would they? In winning three straight NL East titles, going to back-to-back World Series for the first time in the 126-year history of the franchise and winning once, we've been blessed to watch the greatest incarnation of the Phils ever. Next up, a return trip to the Fall Classic in 2010, and a victory (hopefully, as Charlie Manuel said last night, over these Yankees); that would match the 1929-31 A's -- who went to three straight Series and won two of them -- as this city's greatest team in any sport, any time. (Just as the Yankees flourish under Democrats, Philadelphia baseball thrives in horrible economies -- the A's of the Great Depression, the Phillies of late 1970s-early '80s stagflation and unemployment, and now this recession-timed group. Interesting.)

I'm trying to get out of baseball, but here's a very short list of what the Phillies need to do on the off-season/

1. Sign the best set-up man available in free agency. Brad Lidge is under contract and realistically can't be traded, so the Phillies need to take the money from Brett Myers' now-expired contract and get someone who can pitch the 7th or 8th (along with Madson) if Lidge gets it together for 2010, and the 9th if he can't.

2. Somehow revamp the entire bench. The Phillies desperately need someone like Hideki Matsui -- but who can run and play the field.

3. Pray for the rapid maturation of Kyle Drabeck.

4. Take all the extra cash from all those sellouts at Citizens Bank Park and use it -- to buy the full-time services of Dr. Phil (I figure $5 million should do the trick). The Phillies need the world's greatest tough-love psychologogist to whip Hamels and Lidge back into shape, and that may be the only way for this team to return to its rightful destiny next October/November.

Like I said, I was hoping to be totally done with baseball here -- but I now realize that there's also something else that needs to be said...about New York.

Later.

"But were it not for Lidge and Hamels, the Phillies wouldn't be our Phillies, would they?" OUR Phillies? Nice try, Mets' fan.

Right, hire Dr. Phil, a "doctor" who doesn't even have a license to practice. That would be great. The Phils need Hamels to get his mojo back and to sign Lee to an extension. Do that, and they will be fine.

You got a better idea than a shrink for Hamels. because I don't. I think they should also call the new GM in San Diego and see what they could get for Hamels in a trade. It's his hometown, and he wouldn't throw nearly as many gopher balls in Petco Park -- he'd probably return to All-Star form. I have no idea what the Padres could offer in return -- probably not much. They do need an "ace" (heh) to replace Peavy, right?

No way the Phillies pull the plug on Hamels and trade him after one down season. They already showed their willingness to put him with stuff like him breaking his pitching hand in a bar fight and complaining about needing a chiropractor available at all times.

Pretty cool moment last night: I was in a tiny neighborhood bar near the stadiums down in South Philly. I had wandered in their before a playoff game last year after refusing to wait in line at Chickie & Pete's for three hours. We had so much fun that we made it a ritual to go there for every Phillies playoff game. Anyway, when the Yankees recorded the final out, the bartenders shut off the televisions. We did a toast and sang High Hopes for Harry. Good stuff.

Will, how dare you impose your belief in God on others by mentioning that He invented something in your comments. What, atheists aren't welcome here, Mr. Diversity?

We need another top notch pitcher , Cole and Brad will be just fine , the rest needs a little fine tuning , I personaly would bring back Myers as a closer . Moyer should be offered a job as pitching coach apart from that Phillies are in good shape for another tilt .

"You got a better idea than a shrink for Hamels. because I don't." I have a better idea....DON'T OVERREACT to one below par season. Even the greatest lefty in Phillies history (arguably in baseball history) Steve Carlton had off years. Take a look at the 1973 season. The season after his greatest year ever...Lefty lost 20 games and had an ERA that was 2 runs/game worse than the previous season. Should we have traded him after that woeful season?

The worst thing is to overreact. They will need starting pitching but not because of Hamels, it's because of Moyer/Martinez. The Yanks were a better team, but that's no excuse for losing. The Phillies could have won that series. With all those pitchers on 3 days' rest, they showed some patience, but they didn't make the Yankee pitchers work the same way the Yankee batters made the Phillie pitchers work. Our guys were swinging for the fences even with two strikes. What on Earth was Jimmie Rollins doing swinging for the fences when they were down by 4 runs? I don't think Brad Lidge was rattled by Johnny Damon stealing second and third, I think that by the time Rodriguez took the plate, Lidge had already thrown about twenty pitches after spending most of the year on a short leash. How many balls did the Phillies hit the opposite way? A lot fewer than the Yankees did.

"they showed some patience, but they didn't make the Yankee pitchers work the same way the Yankee batters made the Phillie pitchers work." Steve, we often disagree, but on this I stand in total agreement with you. Their approach at the plate was subpar this whole series. Last night, I watched Howard swing at a low 2-0 pitch that he couldnt have done anything with, Ibanez swings at the first pitch, letter high, after Werth drew a walk, and Vic swigns first pitch after Rollins sac fly.

One rough season and you want to trade him? He's 25, has a TON of upside, and he wouldn't net anything more than a dozen bats in a trade right now because of his issues this season. Hamels is 25 and hit his first career rough patch -- something all pitchers go through. Steve Carlton went 10-19 in 1970 (when he was 25, too -- coincidence?) and rebounded with a 20-9 season in 1971 and a 3.5 ERA. I'm starting to think that the reason Philly teams don't hold on the good players has less to do with the fans and more to do with the stupid ideas from the media.

I agree with both SteveMG and RG. The problem in the series wasn't pitching. Pedro pitched fine in game 2, gave up, what, 2 runs, yet the Phils scored 1! Blanton was fine in game 4 (didn;t he leave with a lead?). And you have two stud games pitched by Cliff Lee. If the Phillies bats weren't so silent game 2 and game 4 have different endings. This was about consistent hitting. The pitching wasn't perfect, but it was enough to win a series. How many friggin first pitch strikes do you need to not swing at before you realize that, odds are, you're gonna get a fastball down the middle on the first pitch?

bryan, past that, after taking strike one, they'd then lunge at breaking balls either outside of the strike zone, or on the corners, the kind that you beat into the bround for weak outs. As for Cole, I'll leave that up to the team, they know his personality/mentality better than I do. I'm not certain a starter can consistently get away with only two pitches, his curve needs alot more refinement.
