Government said to have huge enemies list

It could happen to you

You could be one-in-8-million...according to an explosive new article in Radar magazine (h/t Digby):

According to a senior government official who served with high-level security clearances in five administrations, "There exists a database of Americans, who, often for the slightest and most trivial reason, are considered unfriendly, and who, in a time of panic, might be incarcerated. The database can identify and locate perceived 'enemies of the state' almost instantaneously." He and other sources tell Radar that the database is sometimes referred to by the code name Main Core. One knowledgeable source claims that 8 million Americans are now listed in Main Core as potentially suspect. In the event of a national emergency, these people could be subject to everything from heightened surveillance and tracking to direct questioning and possibly even detention.

Wow...Michael Moore and 7,999,999 million other Americans. What are the odds that Roger Ailes and Bill-O got Olbermann on the list, too. Chortle all you want about your favorite liberal punching bags, but God knows who ends up on these lists once the government starts making them. Remember Joe Willie Namath (top) -- he was on Nixon's (much shorter) enemies list when the only weapon of mass destruction he had access to was Johnny Walker Red.

Joe Namath?? He was raised in, um, PITTSBURGH - the home of the PENGUINS. Have the Flyers made it back to Philly yet, or are they still walkin' home?

Umm, pgh, Joe was born and raised in Beaver Falls, Pa, not p-burgh. No one from Beaver Falls considers themselves a part of p-burgh. BTW, didn't your franchise almost go out of business a few years ago and had to be bailed out by the state with a new arena? How are they going to pay crosby, malkin, etc in a few years. Guess they'll be looking for a new home again.

Interesting and very disturbing article. To think that I became a Republican because I thought it was the party of individualism and little government. Good to know that the party betrayed those values.

Uh Publius... if Will The Shill's post is to be believed, it says "five administrations". That would include Carter and Clinton. So why are you pinning it on Republicans?

Anyone else think the guy's source could have been David Gergen -- who worked for Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Democrat Clinton, and also worked on Bush 41's campaign. Also likes to talk. Just sayin'.

No, I am not paranoid; I still believe in the prinicples of the Constitution and Bill of Right. What Patrick Henry said "Give me Liberty or give me death," stil has meaning to me.

As usual, George Bush and his pals can do no wrong. I hope you righties never get caught up in this. Personally, I'm not a paranoid. I know I'm not a danger to anyone or the US government so I'm not worried about getting on this list. However, I'm sure some of you out there that are scoffing about this wouldn't be too happy to find out that you've been singled out for some foolish reason or another. Democrats do this too. I realize this government has to protect itself against terrorist activity, but I'm sure most of the 8 million people on this list are not a danger. This practice just isn't right and should be stopped.

Atkinson, do you ever wonder why Ashcroft and Comey would not sign off on the President's proposal? Forget the whole issue about rounding up a bunch of people for detention, it is disturbing enough that the government wants to continually track e-mails, purchases, and financial transactions, as well as to execute warrantless searches and wiretaps. Does due process mean anything to you? Does the Constitution and its essential principles mean anything to you? I guess as long as you feel safe and good ole' Bushie protects you from all the evils of the Islamic world, it doesn't bother you to disregard the essential rights and freedoms that previous generations fought and shed blood for. Safety and security, that is all that matters.
