Irony, thy name is "Uzi"

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 7:44 PM

Kind of ironic that both these stories come out on the same day, don't you think?

No. 1:

Two key provisions of Philadelphia's most recent attempt to impose local gun controls - banning "straw purchase" of handguns and banning assault weapons - were invalidated today by a state appeals court.

No. 2:

A man armed with an Uzi submachine gun has robbed five West Philadelphia businesses since Tuesday, threatening employees and patrons with the fearsome weapon in each incident.

In three of the robberies, the man had an accomplice who wielded a 9 mm handgun. In all five robberies, the suspects fled the scene on black BMX bicycles, police said.

Detectives are concerned that the powerful weapon, coupled with the apparent youth of the suspects, could lead to a deadly confrontation.

The police are concerned about criminals with these powerful weapons, but Harrisburg?...not that much apparently. It's amazing that contrast between what people worry about -- "Obama's going to take everybody's guns away"* -- versus the reality, which is there are plenty of guns to go around, including this Uzi that is now terrorizing out city.

* Not.

    The solution to this problem is obvious-- you just have to ban black BMX bicycles, and these kinds of crime will stop.

    So if I have the math right, the unconstitutional law was in place on Tuesday when these crimes with the Uzi started. _ your math is wrong -- as you would be aware if you bothered to read the linked article, rather than simply spewing your ill-informed opinions. (the law was never implemented because it was immediately challenged upon its passage.)

    I'm sure that those firearms were purchased legally and those guys have licenses for them. How about, instead of banning guns (i.e. taking them away from the people who own them legally and use them responsibly), we enforce the existing gun laws and take the guns away from the criminals. If you ban guns for the law abiding, the only people that have them are the criminals, because they don't obey the laws (hence the title of criminal). It's common sense. Look at the UK, they have a complete ban of guns, so the only people that have guns there are the gangsters, and gun crime has not stopped at all, in fact, gun crime numbers have soared. Don't believe me? Check it out: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article2426552.ece We can literally observe the problems that gun bans cause, but liberals keep trying anyway. Its really bizarre. I don't understand the complete lack of logic or reason on that.

    maybe we should ban stores too, and ban unkind thoughts while we're at it.

    If were up to Will, we'd ban the Constitution too. Just let those liberal Democrats be benevolent dictators - they are smarter than us and will know how to run our lives and spend our money better than us.

    What you mean Will is that the illegal laws past by the city council were slapped down because they were illegal !! . Now lets see you write a blog about how these thugs should be punished to the fullest extent of the law , how come you never do that ? . Pete you make a very good point , the pointless gun ban in the UK has been a frikin disaster , gun crime is now ten times more common than when the ban went into effect and increases 46% every year , but still the libz there think its a good thing and parrot the same line 'well we dont want to be like America' no they dont want ordinary people defending themselves from the 'poor' criminals thats why .

    Typical pro-gun nonsense from Pete317. Check your timesonline.co.uk article again... "49 deaths, 476 serious injuries" Yea, gee, that's quite the crime wave. Gun bans work. Get used to it.

    Will, can you please provide evidence that this gentleman obtained his Uzi legally? Because if it wasn't, then it really doesn't matter what the rules for law-abiding citizens are, does it?

    PAEnglish is another truth-distorting pro-gun/death poster... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/britain-records-18-fall-in-gun-deaths-1232069.html Gun violence at a 20 year low? 42 gun deaths IN THE ENTIRE NATION IN 2008? Hardly your "frikin disaster". Sounds like a pretty good plan. I vote for it. Let's face it, gun control is the future and the way of civilized peoples. You geniuses should all go live in Alabama if you want your guns/deaths (what a coincidence that gun ownership corresponds directly with gun-related deaths!): http://www.mpbonline.org/content/high-number-gun-deaths-state-lead-gun-control-discussion
