Instapunked! -- today's open thread

How come this "endorsement" from the Perfessor, Glenn Reynolds, isn't driving massive book sales? I guess conservative blog readers aren't ready to tear down the Reagan myth just yet.

I'm biding my time until I can declare the Obama presidency a massive disappointment, probably tonight. Until then, the time's yours. I sure there are 50 different things you can talk about.

Krugman is a pretty hard core socialist. A socialist economics professor is like a pacifist marine corps drill sergeant.......its a contradiction in terms

bpphilly - Kerik withdrew his nomination after his actions were discovered. Another fact that shows the two incidents have little commonality.

---}}} He was either complicit, or he was just stealing money from shareholders and providing no oversight at all. take your pick {{{--- LOL! Take a look at who else was on the advisory board, or paid as advisors for ENRON, and get back to me, taxmemore. You have no evidence of complicity, whatsoever, to any of ENRON's illegal or unethical activities. His nature as an "advisor" had little to do with company operations. Also, I read that article from Fortune. Why don't you explain how that was a "puff piece." It was a straight ahead description of the company. Take a look at what other economists had to say about ENRON at the time - there was nothing unusual in what Krugman worte. It also discloses his relationship to ENRON. Krugman published an article highly critical of ENRON early on in the scandal. Really, taxmemore, come to the table with more than just the standard rightwing talking points. K?

LOL! Bush nominates someone to be head of Homeland Security who is convicted of tax evasion, and the Attytood Republican toadies go into full apologist mode. Obama nominates someone who will not be convicted of tax evasion, because what he did was not nearly as significant legally, and Dems here criticize the nomination. Classic.

Am I the only one who thought TPS stress level would decease after Obama took office? Seriously, TPS - human to human, why constantly so hostile? It's really not good for your health and if it is just some act as a loon its not good for your karma. Take a nice deep breath and relax. Its not that I'm some caring do gooder, either it is simple enlightened self-interest - I or someone I care about may be on a bus, subway, highway with you when you snap - that day won't be pretty. Take care of yourself. Peace Out.

Thanks for the concern, birdie. It's touching. Of course, the Attytood Republican toadies will line up to claim they know better, but I will assure you that it really isn't something that you need to be concerned about: in fact, regardless of election outcomes, my stress level is quite low and I find it amusing to expose the toady frauds at Attytood. That I'm quite pleased that Bush is no longer the president is only icing on the cake.

TPS it was a puff piece describing how they were a streamlined organization devoid of the larger beauracricies of other large companies of the day....they were also lacking any ethical standards as well. And if he wrote a piece that was so critical of them .....then why was he so eager to take their money and work for them just months before? typical socialist.....hate commerce until they have to pay their own bills....then its hands out everywhere

TPS - Kerik indicted for tax fraud not convicted - and the tax fraud aspect of Kerik's life were not known at the time of his nomination. The better examples would be Baird, Chavez, Wood who all lost their nominations because of similar illegal immigrant issues that Geithner also has. Strange that all those woman couldn't be cabinet heads but Ron Brown could - I believe I see a double standard on Capitol Hill.

---}}} TPS it was a puff piece describing how they were a streamlined organization devoid of the larger beauracricies of other large companies of the day. {{{--- Which was true. Their unethical practices were not the only characteristics that describe the company. ENRON was lauded by economists of all stripes prior to the dirt being discovered. I mean seriously, taxmemore, have you even looked into ENRON's political connections to the Bush administration and high-ranking Republicans? Did you notice that powerful Republicans were also on the advisory board? Have you even looked into what Krugman did as a consultant for ENRON? Yet, you single him out, and make the absurdly categorical statement that he was "complicit" in their unethical activities. I get that you don't like "socialists," but maybe you should read what Krugman has to say about capitalism before you label him as such, and maybe you should study the matter before you conclude that he's was an ENRON "shill" and complicit in illegal activities.

A few good points, birdie. Yes, Obama know of Geithner's problems when he made the nomination, whereas Bush didn't know of Kerik's. Also, correction noted - Kerik hasn't been convicted, only charged. On the other hand, unless you're going to give me a conspiracy theory, it is laughable that you are equating the two situations: Kerik has been charged with corruption, conspiracy, and tax fraud. Geithner will be charged with nothing. No comparison.

TPS - how about the comparison to Baird, Chavez, and Wood? Similiar actions, both sides of the aisle, three woman denied but Geithner, don't worry about it. Is this the change I'm suppose to believe in?

LOL! No comparison in the level of seriousness, bp. There is, obviously, a comparison in the context of the ethics of someone nominated for high-ranking administrative positions. One the one hand there was enough evidence that the guy nominated to head Homeland Security by a Republican committed a crime that he has been charged with a crime. On the other hand, Geithner has not been charged with any crimes. Understand now, bp? As I warned you in the previous thread - there is a limit to the amount of free tutoring I will provide, bp. From here on out - I will not provide you with basic lessons in reading comprehension or economics unless we work out a fee structure. Especially since you haven't done your homework. On the other hand, if you look up "atomic scale," "confidence interval" and conventions of how to use quotation marks (so you understand that using them means that you're quoting someone), and write a three page expository essay, I may reconsider.
