In solidarity with Tony Auth

POSTED: Thursday, March 11, 2010, 10:37 AM

I have to say that I'm surprised (I shouldn't have been, but I was) and outraged over the protests against this cartoon by the Inquirer's Tony Auth, which depicts the principal of South Philadelphia High School, whose name is LeGreta Brown. First of all, editorial cartoons are, um, metaphor, people. Just because Ms. Brown claims she spends 12 hours a day at the school doesn't mean that she -- and her bosses on up to the needs-to-be-fired Arlene Ackerman -- weren't totally asleep at the switch, figuratively, as racially motivated violence escalated over time into a day long festival of mayhem against Vietnamese students and other Asians. If you don't believe that Brown and Ackerman displayed horrible leadership and deserve to be held an accountable, then your head is buried in something deeper than the desk in that cartoon.

That's why I'm reprinting the cartoon here at Attytood, in solidarity with Tony Auth. In fact, I'm going to reprint it here a lot between now and the day I come back from my book vacation. There's no more liberal value than saying 'no' to racism like the violence that occurred in that high school, and so I'm proud to stand with Tony Auth in doing exactly that.

On that note, have a good weekend.

You know what's really funny TPS?? Your pathetic life. And I thought you were off googling to find me the definitive list of ex-slave historians residing in the southern states in 1867. If you disagree with Biden's assessment so much or if you think he is a bold face liar as it appears you do I have only one question - why did you vote for him??? has NOTHING to do with toadyism. Nosireebub. LOL!

And BTW tps it's not necessary to lay a foul tongue on me my friend. I could get upset. Things could get out of hand. Then in self defense, I could do something to you that you would not like.

How did these comments deviate from the subject? Stay on topic. This column is about whether or not you agree with Tony Auth's depiction of an asleep at the desk principle. I agree with it. Asleep at the wheel would also work, head in the sand, head in the clouds, fat woman with blinders on, two fat women with duct tape over their mouths, two fat women with noses stuck so far up in the air that..........well, you get what I'm saying? Has absolutely nothing to do with the color of skin or with this or that president of the united states.

---}}} why did you vote for him??? {{{--- I voted for him because the candidates on both sides were liars, and because the Obama/Biden ticket was less bad than the McCain/Palin ticket.

---}}} No one reads your posts tps..{Snip} {{{--- LOL! That's why your posts at 2:06 and 2:38, as well as you latest post - were all in response to my posts. Because you don't read my posts. Hilarious. So which is it, baggie - are you a flat someone that has no self-discipline and is ashamed of what he does and needs to lie about it, or do you have such low self esteem that you consider yourself to be "no one"?

" and because the Obama/Biden ticket was less bad than the McCain/Palin ticket." I understand now. Your vote wasn't a sign of toadyism. Now your frequent defense on this blog of someone who is a liar - is that toadyism???

I have no problem at all with Auth's cartoon. In a "Leadership 101" course, you'd probably read a book titled "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" by Patrick Lencioni, which details leadership and management flaws in a leadership team and how to address them. The dysfunctions include "Absence of trust", "Fear of conflict", "Lack of commitment", "Avoidance of accountability" & "Inattention to results"... Based upon the lengths the harassed students - regardless of race - needed to go to begin getting results (boycotts, going to the media), it easy to see how at least several leadership dysfunctions are perceived by the general public. The perception is that accountability broke down, with the belief if staff just didn't pay much attention, it would go away. That's a failure in leadership from the top level of the school. Mr. Auth's cartoon simply illustrates that perception. This is not an NAACP worthy matter, unless they wish to intervene and advocate for the harassed students. This is about holding an individual in a leadership position accountable for their lack of responsive action. Good luck to LeGreta Brown - I hope she can grow from this experience and respond better for her students' welfare in the future.

---}}} Now your frequent defense on this blog of someone who is a liar - is that toadyism??? {{{--- All politicians lie, birdie. I don't defend lying. I defend some policies of some Democrats because I think they are good policies, or because I think they are better policies than the likely alternatives. But because I support some Democratic policies doesn't mean that I have any illusions about Dem politicians being liars. I'll leave such emotional and delusional reasoning to the toadies.

"All politicians lie, birdie. I don't defend lying. I defend some policies of some Democrats because I think they are good policies"...so by that logic if a politician believed that invading some foreign country was a good idea you'd have no problem with the politician lying to the American people over the reason for invading. The lie wouldn't matter because all politicians lie- just whether or not you thought invading was a good policy.

I don't defend lying, birdie. What was confusing to you about that? Really, you should read my posts a bit more carefully if you are so compelled to respond to them.
