In solidarity with Tony Auth
In solidarity with Tony Auth

I have to say that I'm surprised (I shouldn't have been, but I was) and outraged over the protests against this cartoon by the Inquirer's Tony Auth, which depicts the principal of South Philadelphia High School, whose name is LeGreta Brown. First of all, editorial cartoons are, um, metaphor, people. Just because Ms. Brown claims she spends 12 hours a day at the school doesn't mean that she -- and her bosses on up to the needs-to-be-fired Arlene Ackerman -- weren't totally asleep at the switch, figuratively, as racially motivated violence escalated over time into a day long festival of mayhem against Vietnamese students and other Asians. If you don't believe that Brown and Ackerman displayed horrible leadership and deserve to be held an accountable, then your head is buried in something deeper than the desk in that cartoon.
That's why I'm reprinting the cartoon here at Attytood, in solidarity with Tony Auth. In fact, I'm going to reprint it here a lot between now and the day I come back from my book vacation. There's no more liberal value than saying 'no' to racism like the violence that occurred in that high school, and so I'm proud to stand with Tony Auth in doing exactly that.
On that note, have a good weekend.
Historical rankings of presidents, CSPAN, 2009 poll: Carter = 25; George W. Bush = 36. (Say, pj and birdie, you wouldn't have happened to have voted for George W. Bush, would you? Twice?) Just sayin' Talking point sleuth
bag o LOL!! pj katauskas

Let's get Carter on the $100 bill right away! James TL
----}}} That's about as credible as anyone elses. {{{---- LOL! Rasmussen poll (not of historians): Carter = 17, Bush = 28; Quinnipiac University poll - "Which of these eleven presidents we have had since World War II would you consider the worst president"? - Bush = #1; USA Today poll: Bush "outstanding" = 4%, Carter "outstanding" = 11%, Bush "poor" = 29%, Carter "poor" = 9%. Yup, baggie, the CSPAN poll is just about as good as any other poll - ALL OF WHICH give Bush historically bad ratings. No wonder you voted for him. Twice. At least most people who voted for him, twice, have managed to let go of their toadyism. Talking point sleuth
Congratulations, Bunch, you got one right. Why take a vacation though? Use your platform to hound these leeches and watch your popularity increase... Jimmy Madison Jr.

---}}} especially if Iraq continues on its promising trajectory, eh TPS? {{{--- Which "current trajectory" is that, baggie? The one where large segments of the country has been ethnically cleansed of Sunnis and Christians? Or do you mean the "trajectory" where Iran has an increased influence in a larger segment of the Middle East? Or do you mean the "trajectory" where former insurgents are being paid to not support other insurgents as long as the Americans are there? The "trajectory" where we spend trillions on a poorly-conceived, horribly planned, and incompetently executed policy? The "trajectory" where American credibility has been severely damaged? The "trajectory" where Islamic fundamentalists have been able to enhance their recruitment by virtue of a "cause célèbre'" Help me out here, baggie. Talking point sleuth
---}}} kinda pointless to rate a guy out of office 1 yr.. {{{--- Classic. Historically bad popularity ratings - regardless of how long a president has been out of office. Doubled the national debt. Launched a war that the majority of Americans consider to have been a mistake. Turned a budget surplus into a massive budget deficit. Horrible performance on employment. Stock market did terribly under his tenure. But yeah - kind of "pointless" to assess his administration. LOL! No toadyism there. Nosireebub. Talking point sleuth
---}}} ---}}} kinda pointless to rate a guy out of office 1 yr.. {{{--- Classic. It's too early to rate Bush since he's only one year out of office, but of course, Obama is a failure only one year into his tenure. LOL! Talking point sleuth- bag o cheese - how can you say that poll isn't an accurate record?? Since 2000 JFK has moved up from 8 to 6, passing Thomas Jefferson who stayed at 7. Now granted, I can't disagree with anything JFK did during that period but I don't think it really qualified to move him up two places. The good news is George Washington has moved from #3 to #2 during the same period, because lets be honest G-Wash kicked some serious tail during the last ten years. Of course the President who holds the number 1 ranking is a Republican, he suspended habeus corpes during a time of war and used military tribunals. An historian speaking on good ol' #1 stated: "No president has carried the power of presidential edict and executive order (independently of Congress) so far as he did.... It would not be easy to state what {he} conceived to be the limit of his powers." ....of course I doubt Lincoln would have scored very high in the poll in 1867 - he certainly wouldn't have received many votes in the south. bird11

---}}} he certainly wouldn't have received many votes in the south. {{{--- Once again, we see how "conservatives" view "the south." Say, birdie, how do you suppose the millions of slaves in the south might have viewed Lincoln? Oh. Forgot about them, huh? Just like RG did when he boasted of the literacy rates in 1850. Also, amusing, birdie, is that you would look for an authoritative ranking from an opinion poll on something that is inherently subjective. No one said that the polls are "accurate." They are only a reflection of how the majority of Americans assess presidencies. Of course, your need to dismiss the assessment of the American public as a whole - that Bush was a historically bad president - has NOTHING to do with toadyism. Nosireebub. LOL! Talking point sleuth- bag o cheese - be careful about those JFK overrated comments this close to St. Patty's Day those crazy Irish might get offended and declare a jihad on you. bird11
