In solidarity with Tony Auth

POSTED: Thursday, March 11, 2010, 10:37 AM

I have to say that I'm surprised (I shouldn't have been, but I was) and outraged over the protests against this cartoon by the Inquirer's Tony Auth, which depicts the principal of South Philadelphia High School, whose name is LeGreta Brown. First of all, editorial cartoons are, um, metaphor, people. Just because Ms. Brown claims she spends 12 hours a day at the school doesn't mean that she -- and her bosses on up to the needs-to-be-fired Arlene Ackerman -- weren't totally asleep at the switch, figuratively, as racially motivated violence escalated over time into a day long festival of mayhem against Vietnamese students and other Asians. If you don't believe that Brown and Ackerman displayed horrible leadership and deserve to be held an accountable, then your head is buried in something deeper than the desk in that cartoon.

That's why I'm reprinting the cartoon here at Attytood, in solidarity with Tony Auth. In fact, I'm going to reprint it here a lot between now and the day I come back from my book vacation. There's no more liberal value than saying 'no' to racism like the violence that occurred in that high school, and so I'm proud to stand with Tony Auth in doing exactly that.

On that note, have a good weekend.

actually the stimulus stopped the unemplyment rate from growing. Pre stimulus job losses were 700,000 per month.

Hard to disagree that what happened at SPHS was a disgrace. The general mayhem at the Philadelphia public schools however is the biggest problem. Of course people would rather protest a cartoon than clean up their own house.

"There's no more liberal value than saying 'no' to racism like the violence that occurred in that high school," But Will, that well-known liberal Spike Lee said black people can't be racist! So how can you and Auth be standing up to racism here?

Hmmm Bunch, why didn't you specifically mention the NAACP or as it should be known as the NAABP cause the only color they see is black. Why they didn't show outrage at the treatment of the Asians... In any case, I actually agree with you...

Didn't they ban "hoodies"? You can't combat school violence more effectively that that.

Good for you, Will. Post it often !! Very interesting to note: Even the "so-called independent report" issued by retired judge Giles detailed "a day of chaos at the school, with administrators confused and unsure how to respond to the attacks." If that isn't incompetence, I don't know what is. Everything about her record, her job history, and her lack of concern and lack of action at S. Phila. HS clearly shows "ReGreta" Brown to be a hopeless and uncaring incompetent. She gets praised by a parent because she visited her son 'who got shot' in the hospital. How many of the Asian students did she visit after they required hospitalization because of her "confusion???' It's also interesting to note that 'all the counts of no account,'like Jerry Mondesire, et al, line up to support her, simply because of her race. Where were they last year, when Ackerman kicked Principal Alice Heller out of S. Philly HS??

I can't beloeve I'm saying this, but for once I agreen with you ! Not a racist cartoon and they are all asleep. It's only racism in their eyes if it involves african americans.

Is it ironic that Will post a cartoon of someone sleeping at their desk and then ends the blog with "have a good weekend" at 10:37 AM on a THURSDAY????
