"Who is Barack Obama?"

How did we go from such a close election to McCain becoming such an irrelevancy so quickly? His selection of Sarah Palin and his oddball back-and-forth on the $700 billion bailout were described as "Hail Mary passes," but now it feels like they've been intercepted and returned for touchdowns and McCain has the ball back down 21 points with about 90 seconds left, and you're just waiting for the 4:15 games to start already. If I were McCain, I'd forget the White House and spend the next 30 days trying to salvage what's left of my reputation...but somehow I don't think McCain is going to take that route.

UPDATE: Headline changed from original, which had a word commonly used in political journalism but was causing all kinds of problems with the blog software, including blocking comments for no reason.

Mr. Brightside
Tell the truth for once, Will. If YOU were John McCain, you'd bow out of the race and let Barack Obama run unopposed. Thank God you're NOT John McCain.

The truth is McCain is running a dishonorable campaign. As a voter, I'd love a campaign where McCain focused on, here's my plan for the economy and health care and energy and here's why I think it's better for America. Instead, he's basing his campaign on convincing voters that the Democratic nominee for president is a quasi-terrorist. That fires up some people but it's losing him a ton of respect from everyone else. That's the truth.

John McCain is quickly becoming an embarasment. John McCain has defined himself over the last several weeks as an unpredictable and more importantly, irrational gambler. You can't trust him to make a really important decision. Not nly doesn't he recognize rthe difference between making an unpredictable amd a bad rash decision, he wears it like it's some kind of badge of honor. He's a dope.

Actually, the way that McCain is pulling out of this race hurts the GOP down the ticket. You've seen the polling that shows that the overwhelming majority thinks the country is on the wrong track. Most of them will associate this brand of politics with that wrong track and it could gut the GOP outside of the hardest core red states. Who knows, maybe McCain really is putting country first.

Yeah Will, life sucks because now the MSM is going to have to do actual factual stories about Obama. Blame McCain all you want. Blame the democrats for nominating a sleazebag.

what is truth?
But Will's right. Think about it - all we've heard about, from left AND right is Sarah Palin. All the buzz - positive and negative - is about her. McCain HAS become irrelevant; so much so that now the only way anyone is going to care about him is if goes to the (verbal) nuclear option, mutual assured destruction or not. That's not the way he wanted to run, but he has been backed into a corner. Emotionally right now the election has turned into Obama vs Palin. By bringing her board on he has forfeited his one real advantage - experience; because obviously if you figure a person with Palin's experience is qualified for President (which is the overriding point of a Vice President - that they are qualified to take over the top job) you can't say Obama is not experienced enough. He sold his soul to the right wing, and now he but a shadow of what he was. Sad.

Yeah, Will. You are not a maverick like John McCain. He's the maverick of the senate and him and Sarah Palin are a team of mavericks. People on main street want to know all about stuff like who Barrack Hussein Obama collaborated with to blow up embassies and kick puppies. They want to know about which candidate is a womanizer who hung around with those savings and loan guys, they want to know .... err .... oops ... umm. Say, did you know John McCain is a maverick?
