If this is what we did to Iraq, imagine what we can do to Slovenia

POSTED: Thursday, June 17, 2010, 9:33 PM

If ever there was a time for the United States to deliver shock and awe, it will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. U-S-A!

On that note, I'm going to declare an end to the week that wasn't here at Attytood -- I felt like I was still on book leave even though I wasn't. Next week will hopefully see a return to more regular content flow here. I am wondering one thing -- do any Attytood commenters agree with the initial (and later retracted) comments from Joe Barton and other GOPers that BP's $20 billion is an extortionary slush fund? Or do we prefer to put more people in the Gulf out of work and wait until fisherman start killing themselves and what not, all in the principle of a less-intrusive government?

Have a great weekend, unless you are from Slovenia or Minnesota.

You're presenting a false dichotomy. One can believe that BP should be held liable, but a gov administered fund might not be the best method. Either way, I'm willing to let it play out before passing judgement.

You either disagree that it's a slush fund, or you want fisherman killing themselves. How many drinks did you have before you typed that nonsense?

Doesn't much matter at this point. The Republican filibuster is putting a whole lot more people out of the economic loop. Nobody can buy fish anyway if there is no unemployment extension while companies are cutting back on spending and telling people not to apply unless they have a job. All this just so they can point and say what a bad job Democrats have done. It's a shame that Democrats lack the ability to take advantage of this travesty to point out the differences.

Yes, Barton was right. I'd rather have rule of law and not back room deals. BP's liability may wind up being more than $20BB. Was this back room deal done because the current administration and BP are very cozy?

Rudy, thats what I originally was thinking. However, so far they've stressed that the $20 bil is not a cap.

Rudy, it was a shakedown, not a back room deal. Get your falsehoods straight, would ya?

OK all libs....what do you call it and what constitutional authority allows this type of action? I'm looking for the express constitutional permission that allows this.

You got that right larry. Repugs have no ideas certainly have a fear of actually having to govern. They are like a bunch of little girls, sniping from the sidelines.

For example, the Fifth Amendment SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITS actions of this kind. "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself,*** nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.****"
