Before the posts on the article Will linked to leak over to here, and assuming many will be along the same lines, I will state what I stated there: Those of you who are gloating over this - does knowing what's going on locally mean so little to you, whether it's politics, sports, social happenings, crime, and yes, corruption? Not to mention the opportunity to try to advance your own opinions through the comments columns like this provide? It's obvious that those of you who oppose the viewpoints expressed by the papers have no problem seeing through those viewpoints, as you perceive them; and those who despise these perceived liberal leanings must note that no conservative-leaning competition has arisen to date, so don't expect that one will arise just because the Inky and DN are gone. Even if you believe the knowledge is presented with a slant, there is knowledge of many types to be had here, and lack of knowledge is not strength; if anything it will allow the local powers that be (many of which you despise) to operate even more in the shadows, without you even having a forum to complain about them. Rejoicing over this possible collapse is short-sighted, and those who do rejoice will have only won a Pyrrhic victory. what is truth?- This paper and newspapers in general have had trouble negotiating changes in technology. The group of us that want detailed stories heavy on facts / research and less bent by political ideology (which has gotten worse and worse IMO) appears to be shrinking exponentially. The product has moved too far in the direction of other media outlets; to sound bites and short blurbs that are quickly digested via radio or TV. All this while the ELEVEN unions involved have tried to maintain and even improve conditions for their constituents. There is a reason that many former staff are now on talk radio. Newspapers don't pay.
A business, first and foremost, exists to make money. If it does not do that, it is NOT a business. This appears to be the case here.
Look at the METRO. It is horrible and mostly unreadable even though it presents like radio in quick short blurbs. Still, beyond the fact that it is free, I note that many days the stands are empty by mid morning, why? Many people I talk to and I myself always grab one for the puzzle page. There is something in there that I will go through the pages to find and I can do while I commute. No subscription.
Business is change or die, but sometimes no matter what the change, it dies. This looks like it might be the case here. elbrewador
heck what. i pay the subscription fee. how do you think i feel? rysagr
The Inq, DN workers have a decision to make. Give up the fantasy of a union worker's paradise, or eat leftover Twinkies with the Hostess people in the unemployment line.
The government may ignore unsustainable costs, but private companies cannot. jmc
Really sucks what Norcross and Katz are doing. Good Luck to all of you.

Remember everyone, these are DEMOCRATS who are trying to get destroy the union workers who have already given many concessions to keep this paper going. gemini48
truth,
not sure what your point is but it is more thanapparent that papers all over this country are struggling with compititon from the internet and demographics. The older generations loved their newspaper in their hands and many still do. You will be hard pressed to find someone under 30 buying a newspaper at the newsstand(are there still newstands?). The under 30 crowd are tuned into their iPads, Iphones, Kindles etc. They have enough content that they do not need to pay more for at the newstands. The other factors that all businesses and governments are facing are legacy costs, ie pensions and healthcare for retired workers. This is a huge problem with the US Postal Service. But the "Affordable Care Act" will take care of all these problems. Phishface
How that "let's be the voice of the left wing" business plan working out for you guys? jimmymack
I wonder what Murryman, Wokmaster and Montani have to say about all this Phishface
Seems ironic that Will's previous post was about writing a obituary for a fellow writer. He may need to write one for the newspaper. LouDiamondPhillipsheadScrewdriver
The DNC will be ponying upto save the day beyond their huge ad buys in the last election. Propaganda has value and keeping the slaves shackled on the plantation is high on the list of important priorities. tr88
Paper newspapers like the inky and DN will be extinct in a few more years. There is just not enough subscriptions and advertising to make money like this anymore. If you want my advise, kill the DN and invest more in online content. I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount per month or year to access new online. chasing history
For the record, I wish nothing but the best for all parties invoulved. The drivers, mechanincs, journalsts' etc. I hope the all can come to an agreement and everyone keeps their jobs. I mean that sincerely. Looking back, one of my favorite jobs was delivering papers when I was a kid in the 70's. The Inquirer and the Evening Bulletin. A guy I knew from the neighborhood used to work at The Inky, he may still be there for all I know. That being said, I'll bet a big bone of contention much, as it was recently in Wisconsen, is rising health insurance premiums. It's sometign the the "Affordable Care Act" will not cure. This journalist speaks often about the exponential growth of medical care and pharmiceutical costs and has a great peice today about it:
http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=215947 Phishface- democrats will still continue to win elections, paper or no paper. GOP is clueless and tone deaf.
I think guys like bill a and jmc need Philly.com more than they realize. SteveMG
