Free gas, the Phillies and sex -- today's open thread

POSTED: Friday, May 23, 2008, 9:19 AM

Can you find a link between the items in that headline? -- because I sure can't. Working the Friday late shift, so you'll need to talk amongst yourselves today. Too bad, because there's a lot to riff on, including:

1) With gas at $4-a-gallon, this is what Rick Santorum considers "a wake-up call" -- now you know why he's a newspaper columnist today and not a U.S. senator.

2) Christine M. Flowers is furious at the police commissioner and the mayor -- why does she have such little respect for authority figures? Sad.

3) Anatomy of smear, 2008: Why millions of Americans think Obama is a Muslim.

Discuss.

Jeez, the amount of fear that Obama sparks amongst the stupid and the nutty is hysterical. First he was a Muslim Manchurian candidate, that didn't stick. then he was the choice of Hamas and Iran's prez, that hasn't stuck. Now, he's an apostate that the Muslims around the globe will rally against, which is a) lacking of any factual basis and b)COMPLETELY contrary to the first two nutjob theories. Not a surprise that some moron is trying to peddle this idiocy a few posts down.

Meanwhile, now that McCain has the Repub nom in the bag, its time to become a centrist maverick again, ergo he's ditching Hagee and Parsley because its become politically expedient to do so. All aboard the zizag express!

If he's an apostate, does that mean he loses those key endorsements? One of the most cherished principles in America, something I guess forgotten is that of self determination. In this land of opportunity, you can become what you want, worship as you please, have more than your parents did and give your kids the opportunity to have more than you did. Self determinatin is why we were able to cast off the bonds that attached to England. Unless of course, you're one of THEM.

As relates to #1, who is Bunch insulting here? Is it newspaper columnists or the Senate?

Somebody is going to have to invent an engine that runs on water, oh wait, bottled water costs more than gasoline. Well then let's switch to hydrogen, but then the major companies will use their distribution systems to control that market. The only solution is rechargeable electric cars and there are alredy plug-ins reaching the market. The extra electricity can come from wind farms and the solar farms built throughout the southwest and south. But as long as we have presidents who announce "Mission Accomplished" when they think they have captured a major oil source, we'll watch the price of gasoline rise until they have squeezed out the profit on the last drop left. P.S. look at the price of gas that day, then look at today's price- he does seem to have accomplished his mission, just not the one we thought he meant.

Santorum's column was a joke, especially using Norway as a case example. Oh no, Norway allows same sex domestic partnerships, their country must be falling apart! Oh, wait: International rankings Worldwide quality-of-life index, 2005 3rd out of 111 Democracy Index 4th out of 167 GDP per capita 2nd out of 232 (2006) Human Development Index 2nd out of 177 Apparently Santorum is getting all his information from an article Stanley Kurtz wrote for The Weekly Standard in 2004, but when the facts are actually looked at, it was just more fear baiting. "Despite what Kurtz might say, the apocalypse has not yet arrived. In fact, the numbers show that heterosexual marriage looks pretty healthy in Scandinavia, where same-sex couples have had rights the longest. In Denmark, for example, the marriage rate had been declining for a half-century but turned around in the early 1980s. After the 1989 passage of the registered-partner law, the marriage rate continued to climb; Danish heterosexual marriage rates are now the highest they've been since the early 1970's. And the most recent marriage rates in Sweden, Norway, and Iceland are all higher than the rates for the years before the partner laws were passed. Furthermore, in the 1990s, divorce rates in Scandinavia remained basically unchanged." Doesn't Santorum have an editor to look at the drivel he writes?

Wish everone a happy Memorial day and see how we treat our people in uniform these days Washington D.C. May 21, 2008 at 9:56: Dept of Transportation Federal Transit Administration sends: Recently, there have been local incidents in which military personnel have been verbally assaulted while commuting on the Metro. Uniformed members have been approached by individuals expressing themselves as anti-government, shouting anti-war sentiments, and using racial slurs against minorities. In one instance, a member was followed onto the platform by an individual who continued to berate her as she exited the metro station. Thus far, these incidents have occurred in the vicinity of the Reagan National Airport and Eisenhower Ave metro stations on the yellow line, however, military members should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times while in mass transit. Should you be approached by any individuals expressing anti-government/anti-war sentiments, or any other types of direct verbal assault, immediately notify your local police jurisdiction. If riding metro, exit the train at the next stop, distance yourself from the individual, and notify the Metro Transit Police Department. ... Here are a few friendly reminders of personal protective measures that can help you to stay safe: - If possible, do not commute in uniform (military members) - Do not display DoD building passes, “hot cards”, or personal identification in open view outside of the workplace - Do not discuss specifics about your occupation to outside solicitors - Always try to remain in well lit, well populated train cars if traveling via metro - Be vigilant at all times! Santorum was very popular in much of the state, too bad for him, the wrong parts of the state. Oddly, this obsession with homosexual deviance was his undoing, and now when he could have been a V.P.(prior to getting creamed in 2006) he's bringing it back. So do you think he's banking on 2012 being 1994 and making a hard right turn toward Pennsylvania Ave.? Losers don't win. Ask Newt.

"Furthermore, in the 1990s, divorce rates in Scandinavia remained basically unchanged." -------------------------------------------------- The End of Marriage in Scandinavia The "conservative case" for same-sex marriage collapses. by Stanley Kurtz MARRIAGE IS SLOWLY DYING IN SCANDINAVIA. A majority of children in Sweden and Norway are born out of wedlock. Sixty percent of first-born children in Denmark have unmarried parents. Not coincidentally, these countries have had something close to full gay marriage for a decade or more. Same-sex marriage has locked in and reinforced an existing Scandinavian trend toward the separation of marriage and parenthood. The Nordic family pattern--including gay marriage--is spreading across Europe. And by looking closely at it we can answer the key empirical question underlying the gay marriage debate. Will same-sex marriage undermine the institution of marriage? It already has.
