Oy. Just like Lloyd Bridges picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue in "Airplane!", looks like I picked the wrong day to spend eight hours behind the wheel of a car (don't ask). As a die-hard (and die-often) U.S. soccer fan, of course I missed the team's greatest victory, arguably, since 1950 (or at least since 2002). Hopefully today's 2-0 shocker over the top-ranked team in the world, Spain, is the start of a glorious run into next year's World Cup, which like today's game will be played in South Africa.

At the same time, I missed the tabloido-political story of the year in the unraveling of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. Maybe it's just as well. As tempting as it is to sit here in cyberspace and make "Last Tango" jokes all day, I feel very sorry for the man's wife and children. Henry David Thoreau said that "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desparation," but that was before email, texting, Twitter, and what not. In 2009, desperate lives tend to become very loud, very quickly.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking..... Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking..... Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.... Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.

"You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.

A hospital? What is it?

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

"Three things cannot long be hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth."--- Buddha. The Zen philosopher Basha once wrote, 'A flute with no holes, is not a flute. A donut with no hole, is a Danish.' He was a funny guy.

More about the man you said was "contrite" bryanc. --snip-- I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband's infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago. --snip-- So, Sanford's wife asks him to leave. He does so. And then abandons the responsibilities he was elected to carry out and flies down to Argentina to get some more tail. He hides what's going on, and then flat out lies to the press about it. ONLY AFTER he's told that emails exposing his adultery will go public, he holds a press conference and expresses his "concern" about his wife and children. The very same wife and children that he was soooooo concerned about when he was setting them up for public humiliation only a few hours prior. Wow! That's some "contrition" there, byranc.

Now here's a statement of "contrition." Sanford - earlier this morning to a reporter: --snip-- "I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion." --snip-- Then the man actually has the gall to go on national TV and talk about "God's Law" after he came clean, after being asked by his wife to leave two weeks ago, after lying to reporters as late as this morning, and ONLY AFTER he was told that emails exposing his adultery would be published. Yeah. What a "contrite" man.

Mark Sanford's latest statements of "contrition:" "I'm very sorry that I had an affair. I'm very, very sorry that I continued my affair even after my wife confronted me and tried to work things out on the behalf of our children. I'm very, very, very sorry that after we couldn't work it out, and my wife asked me to leave, I went down to Argentina to get some more action. I'm very, very, very, very sorry that I abandoned my responsibilities as the elected governor of my state. I'm very, very, very, very, very sorry that I lied about the whole situation as recently as this morning when a reporter asked me about where I had been. I'm very, very, very, very, very, very sorry that I only acknowledged my adultery and lying AFTER I was told that emails exposing my affair were about to be published. I'm very, very, very, very, very, very, very sorry that like a coward, I asked America to consider the welfare of my wife and children only after I completely and blatantly disregarded their welfare as recently as this morning. See, I am very sorry because God doesn't approve of such behavior, and I am a man of deeply held religious convictions."

Think for myself
2012 GOP Presidential hopefuls: Palin, Ensign, Sanford all done. What are the odds on Jindal self destructing?

why don't the neocons condemn the torture by the ultra conservative government in Iran? is it because they also support torture?
