Do you believe in windmills?....YES!

POSTED: Monday, March 9, 2009, 8:23 AM

OK, I realize almost all of these guys are about as Dutch as I am, but if you missed Saturday's stunning upset by the Netherlands over the mighty Dominican Republic (and I'm thinking that you probably did...), them you missed something that would have once seemed an oxymoron, some riveting March baseball. I'm waiting for the Disney movie, which will probably be called "Dutch Treat" or "Tilting at Windmills." The thing is, do you have any idea how hard it is to play baseball in wooden shoes?

Meanwhile, Team USA is looking like last year's men's basketball team in Beijing -- i.e., remembering that we invented the sport (more or less). And the Phillies' "no worries" spring training is making things look a little too easy going into the real baseball season.

Will--when it comes to the Phillies--WORRY. Other teams are going to constantly cue lefthanded pitchers to start games and come out of the bullpen when facing the Phillies this year. The Phillies don't have enough righthanded contact and power to overcome that on a daily basis. First place is more elusive than anyone is thinking right now because we're all still drunk on the "WFC" party down Broad Street. And even if those two surprise guys make the roster who are righthanded hitters {Mayberry and Giles}, where will they play with this line-up???

You could be right, Richie (and don't you prefer to be called "Dick" now?) but it depends on whether the Phillies were right in their belief that Ibanez can hit lefties, as his numbers last year suggested. Someone like Mayberry is a tough decision -- he could be trade bait for a veteran while we're still at our WFC peak potential, although that could be something we'd regret down the road.

2/3 of the starting pitchers the Phils will face will be right-handed. How many left-handed closers are their in the NL East? The Phils will be better offensively than they were last year.

2/3 of the starters the Phils face will be left-handed. How many left-handed closers are there in the NL? Relax. Once they get to full strength, the Phils will be better offensively than they were last year.

Sorry - I meant that 2/3 of the starters they face will be right-handed.

Top 2 lefthanders in wins in the NL last year not names Moyer or Hamels were Johan Santana and Randy Wolf.............oh I am sooooooo scared that we will be facing pitchers like Randy Wolf most of the season. BTW there are 5 RH bats in the lineup to face lefties (Rollins, Werth, Victorino, Ruiz, and Feliz). Stop looking for problems that don't exist.

It's nice for a change to see a spring training without many big problems. If Happ pitches like he did the other day (7 SO in 3 innings), the phils could be in for a good season. I wouldn't expect mayberry, Jr to continue to hit like he's been hitting but he would fill one of their largest needs, a RH power hitting OF. GO PHILS!!!!One more thing.... Lol at Bunch for pretending to be a Phila. sports fan!... apparently Ricky is has been sick.....
