UPDATE: Here's the predicted cold water! Still, stay tuned for a different take on this issue.

For real! (per the Associated Press).

That said, it may not be what you expected, either. Talk about your runaway grand jury!

McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

There's not a chance in hell of this standing up -- but it does speak to something else important: How enormously unpopular Dick Cheney and the Bush administration are across this country, even in the president's home state of Texas. How else does something like this could even happen. Some days it seems like the Democrats in Congress are the only ones who don't get it.

Fascinating story -- I hope to have more later.

Yeah, well too bad that Bush is going to pardon all of his corrupt, war criminal, war profiteering Administration, staff and friends. Hopefully someone will haul Bush to the Hague!

Cheney rules! He probably didn't do more than pause when he heard of the 'indictment'.

Wow. On the same day Ted "Bridge to Allenwood" Stevens loses another GOP Senate seat...Not surprising that Texas indicted Gonzo, though...considering the way they feel about immigrants.

the President's home state is Maine. He's a pretend Texan, a pretend cowboy, a pretend leader. They all deserve a trial in the hague.

Mr. Smith
Every member of that Grand Jury should be waterboarded, then sent to Guantanamo to spend the rest of their lives. Not for indicting Cheney, but for frivolously making a mockery of the Grand Jury process.

I have been catching up on back issues of The New Yorker and just read a devastating account of how awful a private detention center for immigrants in Texas is. Not sure if this is the same one, but someone should be indicted for the operation of that center. For one thing, is is another example of why letting private corporations handle work that ought to be done by the government is another bad Republican idea (actually one of the main bad Republican ideas, as we have seen in Iraq). Some things, such as prisons and probably hospitals, should not be run "for profit." Hope they get Cheney and Gonzales, but I would not count on it.

Yeah this is pretty pathetic. The DA (Guerra) should have the book thrown at him for his flagrant waste of taxpayer dollars.

This must be a dream...please God make it be so. The whole administration should be handcuffed and transported to the Hague.

Texas Democrats love to indict Republicans for invented "crimes". the fact that they're making fools of themselves is wasted on ideologues like Will.

You're probably right JMC. The evidence will be hard to come by if it even exists at all. If they are guilty, I hope they are prosecuted for it. No one is supposed to be above the law.
