Corbett: I don't pay attention to polls...I pay attention to billionaires

The Corbett administration: Let them eat gas:
To offset the huge cuts, almost two in three Pennsylvanians favor taxing companies that extract and sell natural gas, and placing new taxes on the sale of smokeless tobacco and cigars.
But...
The poll may fall on deaf ears, though.
"While he was running for governor, Tom Corbett did not comment on polls," said Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley. "As governor, he will be governing on policy, not polls."
Wow, a politician who doesn't listen to the polls -- let's reserve a chapter for Corbett in Profiles in Courage II. Except occasionally the people are wiser than the politicians. The governor isn't ignoring the polls because he's a man of principle, but he's ignoring the polls because the people of Pennsylvania don't want what's good for his billionaire campaign donors from Boca Raton and from Oklahoma.
The good news is the public is already onto Corbett's scam just two months into his term. The bad news is that it's not clear what we can do about him between now and 2014. The only real Achilles heel is that his GOP majority in Harrisburg isn't that big, and some sububan Philadelphia Republicans might be susceptible to pressure.
If it's applied.
I don't suppose this would be a good time to remind our right-wing friends that our tax burden in the US is lower than almost every other developed nation in the world. Only Mexico, Turkey, Korea and Japan have lower taxes. But hey, if lower taxes is the end all and be all of your life, I suppose you could get used to tamales, kimchi, kuru fasulye or sushi. Mr. Baseball- //and some sububan Philadelphia Republicans might be susceptible to pressure.
If it's applied.///
That sorta sounds like a threat.
Good thing Corbett isn't Chinese. Bunch would be having an aneurism. Mr. Smith

[[==== Hey doofus, it is obvious you know little or anything about how things work or you are an accademic ===]]]
Yeah. If I had a "real world" understanding, I'd realize that PA companies wouldn't charge market rates for their product regardless of whether or not they had to pay an excise tax just as fracking companies have to do in other states? If I had a "real world" understanding, I'd realize that fracking companies in PA would reduce their price to below market rates because they don't have to pay the excise tax that fracking companies have to pay in others states - because companies always pass lower taxes off to consumers with lower prices.
If I had a "real world" understanding, I would realize that taxes = consumer price, even though Wyoming has the 2nd lowest gasoline price and the 37th lowest gasoline tax and Colorado has the 3rd lowest gasoline price with the 22nd lowest gasoline tax. I'd realize that taxes = consumer price even though Alaska has the lowest gasoline taxes and the 3rd highest gas price.
If I had a "real world" understanding, I'd realize that there aren't myriad factors that go into consumer prices, and that the only factor is taxes. Talking point sleuth- these comments are not always personal, they are just criticisms of corbetts' policies, which are clearly based on lies, half-truths and stupidity.... he has consistently lied about the risks of taxing companies on the marcellus shale....and now he is being sued for violatting the penna tobacco settlement act and adultbasic and medicaid.... not only is he a liar but a criminal....and i add a coward, as he is balancing the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable citizens of this state
Excellent chart:

But AION, haven't you heard? You give the money to the wealthy, the most efficient users of capital, and the capital trickles down to all the dirty, freeloading leeches otherwise known as people who work for a living. Murrayman
Comment removed.- Murrayman, please.
RG has explained the proper terminology to use when referring to tens of millions of working poor, tens of millions of elderly people dependent on Medicare, and tens of millions of children born into poverty.
The proper term for those Americans is the "parasite class." Talking point sleuth

Of course TPS forget that the product is in a price taking market, and that it's demand is relatively inelastic (yet there are good substitutes) or forget studies showing that additional taxes will not nearly be borne by the consumer (Mankiw more specifically). But hey, don't let partisanship stop you from mining. Yes, the incidence is limited. IT's the same thinking that has allowed us to continually be fed, without constraint, that lowering marginal tax rates increases revenue! Yes, lo and behold, raising a tax on a price taking product might yield more tax revenue. Murrayman
Yes, we progressives are indeed all violent goons. Like the progressives who bomb abortion clinics, or kill doctors, or send letter bombs from our shacks in Idaho, or stomp on the heads of protesters at a Rand Paul rally, or blow up government buildings full of innocent people in Oklahoma City. Oh, wait a minute, those are all things done by upstanding non-goon conservative/reactionaries. wmichael- Or send death threats to Rs in Wisconsin... oh, wait, where's [[--snip--annoying--snip]] to point out Mommy, mommy, they did it first? sadim

[[[=== What really amazes me about all these discussions is that there are actually people in this world who are deluded enough to think that raising taxes on a company means the company will pay more taxes ===]]]
Excellent point.
What is also amazing is that there are actually people in this world who are deluded enough to think that when if gas companies had to pay excise taxes in PA, as they do in other states where fracking is taking place, the state would have more tax revenue, thus reducing the need to cut education funding, something the majority of residents in the state oppose. Those same deluded folks probably think that the ability of corporations to pass off increased taxes to consumers in the form of increased prices is limited by myriad competitive factors. They probably think that without paying the taxes levied in other states, companies can charge similar rates for their products as companies in other states and simply pocket the additional revenues (and funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars of that revenue to election coffers for folks like Corbett).
How could people be so deluded? Imagine that - thinking that increased tax revenue for the state would be a good thing, or that companies would pocket the addition revenue rather than reduce their prices below market rates, or that corporations would funnel hundreds of thousands of those dollars to politicians.
Too funny. Talking point sleuth- Hey doofus, it is obvious you know little or anything about how things work or you are an accademic, but I repeat myself. ALL costs are passed on to the customer, wether the customer is retail, corporate or government. Raw material, labor, transpotation, inspection and any other costs (including gov. fines) are included before that awful profit % is added. Only a lib wouldn't understand that.
PJ Orourke has a great quote on gov."Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."
Any politician-either party.

Comment removed.- As I suspected, you left wing loons hate the idea of someone making a profit. All wealth belongs to the state to be doled out according to their deemed "need". You are probably some lazy, low pay loser with no ambition to do better than you have, but rather have someone give it to you. OR a gov.,union worker or academic. But, I repeat myself-again. georgel
Comment removed.- My experience is that those that have it, don't brag about it, so I have to assume you are up at 2:43 sucking on something.
I believe from your spittle spewing tirade that you fit the classic definition of "barking moon bat", and I think you've already proved that. Moron. georgel
Comment removed.- Yes I have a very nice job providing a USA made product. You, on the other hand, are a currency speculator like your hero the self loathing Jew George Soros. I thought you libz hated speculators. According to your leaders they steal from the masses. They aren't "middle class". They aren't part of the loathed flyover part of this country. They aren't part of the great unwashed you libz claim to care about. You live off of the misery of others and sweat of another man's brow. How admirable. How manly. How virtuos. How phoney.Your parents must be very proud of you. You probably have never worked a real job in your life. You are a blowhard. Scary avatar. Probably a the most powerful thing about you. I sit here trembling. As I said, real men don't brag, wether they can or not. Now go change your diaper you simpering little wus. georgel
Actually Will you wrote "The bad news is that it's not clear what we can do about him between now and 2014" since you know you can't hold a recall, it IS clear that you can't do ANYTHING about HIM... so bait the readers with a line like that? shock89
Atkins actually the goal, if I may Will, is to not have the bottom fall out of this thing (on the working class) while having our water completely poisoned for the heck of it. I don't know why but when I think of this situation I'm reminded (and get chills from) the Pink Floyd song "When the Tigers Broke Free", especially the line, "the Anzio bridgehead was held for the price / Of a few hundred ordinary lives". But no, the best way to deal with what is essentially a revenue problem is to cut endlessly rather than continue to promote employment (this of course undercuts Newt's demmarse WSJ op-ed explaining how the extension of the tax cuts are the reason the unemployment number has decreased). Gotta love it - abject abhorrence of supply side policies proven to not work (repeatedly) become 'hate and venom'. Sweet. Murrayman

go Corbett! The problem is spending and we gotta cut it. Starve the beast that is the government. We'll never be able to provide enough taxes to feed it,it needs to be starved to death! alsdkjk
@barlowjames - typically I would agree with you, but this is an extraction tax. Even Texas has them. You're taxed on what you pull out of the ground. It would generate pretty consistant revenue. Vote for Dickie

"Except occasionally the people are wiser than the politicians. " Of course the rest of the time the politicians know what is best for us despite what the polls say. That would of course explain the votes on the health care/insurance bill. What really amazes me about all these discussions is that there are actually people in this world who are deluded enough to think that raising taxes on a company means the company will pay more taxes. Our utility costs will go up and all the politicians can parade around congratulating each other how they really stuck it to the evil corporations. barlowjames

I kinda meant we don't have recall, like they do in Wisconsin. Interesting, though, that your thoughts would immediately turn to violence. will- Will,
Don't forget the big point that people were not aware prior to the election: this is a re-districting year and since so many republicans won based on blood money from billionaires you better believe gerrymandering is in the works for 2012. This was all capable because Mr bush was allowed to steal a election and get his corprate greedy lawyers Altio and Roberts in the supreme court. And they paid the republican establishment back by allowing corporations to change campaign finacing. Atlas
"and some sububan Philadelphia Republicans might be susceptible to pressure."I think you're confusing pressure with whining. RG
