This is the dedicated agent of the Communist conspiracy* who brought the scourge of "federal highways" to America.

* Yes. the John Birch Society really did call him that.

===]]] that I receive numerous benefits and privileges for my taxes, [[[===

Right. You don't benefit from government-funded biomedical research. I mean who thinks that government-funded research in infectious diseases has reduced medical hazards to you and your family, right?

And lord knows, you've never benefited from any other government-funded scientific research.

That's why you live with your family in that cave and channel your online communication directly onto Philly.com's server with your powerful libertarian paranormal capabilities.

Do you know what the tax rates were when we eliminated smallpox?

Sources of Science for U.S. Patents
Where is the science coming from for U.S. industrial patents? To answer this question, we first removed the government patents (for example, NIH's patents), the patents issued to universities, and foreign-invented patents from the list. The result of this analysis is shown on Figure 6.9, the top part of which is for biomedicine. What we found is that about 10 percent of the science base of U.S. biomedicine comes from the U.S. drug industry (private). Fifty-five percent comes from U.S. publicly funded science—that is, from universities, medical schools, government laboratories, federally funded research and development centers, and other public science sources. The other 35 percent is foreign, and the distribution of foreign citations is such that roughly 15 percent of that is industry. Most of the foreign citations refer to public science also. In fact, if U.S. and foreign private companies are taken together, 15 percent of the science cited in U.S. industry drug and medicine patents comes from the private sector, and all of the rest comes from the public sector.

Ah yes, the king of the non sequitur.

Because, you know, that proves that government-funded biomedical research doesn't save lives.

What were the tax rates when doctors used leeches, RG?

Its actually quite relevant, as smallpox was devastating. Yet we didn't need to run a $1.5 tril deficit to inoculate against it.

===]]] If NIH research on drugs and treatments is so beneficial, why'd we just overhaul the health care industry because, um, drugs and treatments are so unaffordable? [[[===

    Good point, RG.

The fact that health insurance availability was lacking for poor people proves that none of the biomedical research funded by the NIH or the NSF saves lives, improves medical care, etc.

You get more hilarious by the post, RG.

Strawman. It just doesn't do it affordably, apparently.

Well, thats enough for me. TPS has solved our budget woes. Turn SS and Medicare into welfare programs, and keep increasing the funding for bloated gov agencies. Oh, and tax the rich. He's Won The Future.

Hey, RG - I was ABSOLUTELY agreeing with you: tax rates when smallpox vaccines were developed is direct proof that NIH- and NSF-funded biomedical research doesn't save lives and improve medical care.

The US Congress passed the Vaccine Act of 1813 to ensure that safe smallpox vaccine would be available to the American public....By 1832, the federal government of the United States established a smallpox vaccination program for Native Americans....In the United States, from 1843 to 1855 first Massachusetts, and then other states required smallpox vaccination. Although some disliked these measures, coordinated efforts against smallpox went on, and the disease continued to diminish in the wealthy countries. By 1897, smallpox had largely been eliminated from the United States.

Dang government interference - preventing the spread of smallpox.

Yes, I think we should go back to the "original intent" of our founding fathers and the Constitution. No Air Force (not in the Constitution), no police or firemen (not in the Constitution), no federal highways (not in the Constitution), and only white land owning men should be able to vote, African Americans should only count as 3/5 of a person, and the capital should be in Philadelphia again.

The Air Force was originally under the Army, I don't care if they move it or cut it. Police and fire are the responsibility of state and local gov, so you've really shown your ignorance of basic civics here. Since roads weren't an enumerated power, highways could and should have been handled by the states as well.
