Climate change game change: Bloomberg endorses Obama

POSTED: Thursday, November 1, 2012, 4:30 PM

With each passing hour, it's looking more and more like Hurricane Sandy is the Cuban Missle Crisis of climate change -- and a political moment we'll long remember.

Much like Gov. Christie's post-storm embrace of President Obama, there's reasons to be cynical about New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (and plenty of reasons to dislike him) but this is a stunning turn of events however you look at it:

In a surprise announcement, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday that Hurricane Sandy had reshaped his thinking about the presidential campaign and that as a result he was endorsing President Obama.

Mr. Bloomberg, a political independent in his third term leading New York City, has been sharply critical of both Mr. Obama, a Democrat, and Mitt Romney, the president’s Republican rival, saying that both men have failed to candidly confront the problems afflicting the nation. But he said he had decided over the past several days that Mr. Obama was the best candidate to tackle the global climate change that the mayor believes contributed to the violent storm, which took the lives of at least 38 New Yorkers and caused billions of dollars in damage.

“The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast — in lost lives, lost homes and lost business — brought the stakes of next Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief,” Mr. Bloomberg wrote in an editorial for Bloomberg View.

“Our climate is changing,” he wrote. “And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it may be — given the devastation it is wreaking — should be enough to compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.”

The other interesting thing, and a sharp twist of the political knife to Mitt Romney's back, is that Bloomberg said he could have endorsed '03 Romney. Probably a lot of folks could have -- more proof that the Tea Party and talk radio may have destroyed the Grand Old Party for a long, long time.

I'd say that's a pretty important endorsement. Christie had some nice things to say about the President. How long before the completely GOP becomes a regional party?

Important to who? Is anyone in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, or Colorado voting for Obama now because of this endorsement? No, just like the useless newspaper endorsements both sides get.

Let's see. BloomBERG might just influence some Jewish voters in Florida.

Hey buddy you may be right, but let me ask you this: do you think Bloomberg's endorsement hurt Obama in those states? Helped Romney?

YOu mean to tell me Bloomberg of all people was an undecided?? C'mon dude! They way he put this sounds like he was leaning towards Romney until the storm, that's how Bush and Guiliani got re-elected.

and plenty of reasons to also like Bloomberg?
self made billionaire - did not inherit big bucks.
had an idea and ran with it.
he gives to charity without being "forced to" and it appears without prejudice.
doesn't like what he sees and he does something about it - he started democrat, became republican and then independent.
    no one is perfect.

Climate change was another "Reefer Madness" and a wet dream for you lazy copy and paste news editors.

*In all of the debates Obama hadn’t planned to mention climate change once.

*Obama has not mentioned the crisis in the last two State of the Unions addresses.

*Occupywallstreet does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded carbon trading stock markets run by corporations.

*Julian Assange is of course a climate change denier.

*Canada killed Y2Kyoto with a freely elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit).

Romney thanks us for fear mongering votes his way.

Good news for REAL planet lovers; climate change was real all right but really not a crisis leaving climate change a LEGAL exaggeration. The rest of you just wanted this misery to be real and at least Bush didn’t condemn our kids to the greenhouse gas ovens with childish glee.

“We could be at the point of no return.” Yes “could” be. Help, my house could be on fire maybe? How history will laugh!

Not one single IPCC warning says it will happen, only might happen and could happen and may happen and will likely happen. Exaggeration isn’t a crime and don’t forget it was science that gave us the pesticides that made stewardship necessary in the first place.

That's a pretty impressive word salad you tossed together there. My turn...

Rising ocean temps (2.3 degrees above long-term average)allowed Sandy to strengthen as it moved to the NE. These types of late-season hurricanes typically weaken as they move north over colder water.

Global Warming --> increased moisture in atmosphere = storms on steroids

Global Warming --> rising sea levels = storm surges on steroids

Global Warming --> unseasonable jet stream patterns as a response to ice loss from warmer temperatures in the Arctic runs headlong into Sandy = Frankenstorm

Bought!! NYNY is in shambles and President doesn't visit? Trading votes for aid is what this is about. Come one it's obvious!!!...and after the election there'll be a JOB for the Mayor of NY in Washington. AND if Romney WINS, he will be recruited to Washington to to a cabinet position to straighten out the economy...it's in the tea leaves, just read them. DUH

Just enough to push the undecided voter towards Obama.

The October surprise goes to Obama: He would have a high profile Republican (Christie) gushing over him.

    Clark_Kent_Superhero:

Mayor Bloomberg actually asked the president not to visit, because the security arrangements will be a burden to the NYC at that point.

So your premise "trading votes for aid" is wrong!
