Journalist Dan Froomkin, fired by the Washington Post for reasons that many still find hard to fathom, nails the state of modern journalism in an interview with NYU media guru Jay Rosen:

And yet “the sense that, if you have a belief that you publicly espouse, you can no longer be fair about reporting a subject is problematic,” Froomkin continued. “Reporters have beliefs, they have values—the key is for them not to let those beliefs affect their reporting. Downie wanted people to disenfranchise themselves.” Besides, Froomkin continued, there are principles that journalists do, and more to the point should, stand for—accountability, transparency, fair play, human rights—and “there’s nothing wrong with journalists wearing those values on their sleeves.”

'Journalists' telling us why they don't have to be fair...Exhibit A as to why newspapers and network news are all but dead.

Another lib who uses a "higher calling", or "greater good" as his own personal exemption from journalistic standards. Don't worry about it Mr. Froomkin, let your self-righteousness run wild. Journalists today take information, filter it through their own ego, and let the mess spill onto the page.

The Hate Americans First crowd will never accept accountability. They live in a responsibility-free zone. "Journalists today take information, filter it through their own ego, and let the mess spill onto the page." - A better description of Fox News you could not find...

bill-o and jsmac - Did you EVER pay attention in history class? Do you have ANY idea of the purpose of the press as it existed during the founding of this country?........Didn't think so.....And bill, the reason broadcast and print is dying is...well, let me put it this way - Are you heading out today to buy some 8-tracks? How about some wax cylinders?......No? Guess music is dead.

"I think an editor should be independent, that is, of personal influence, and not be moved from his opinions on the mere authority of any individual. "....Thomas Jefferson. I guess I should explain, since you apparently don't understand what it means - Opinion, which by it's definition precludes "balance", it a primary component of a free press.

Froomkin and Bunch should start their own media empire and show the world how it's done. You will put Murdoch to shame I'm sure.

"I guess I should explain, since you apparently don't understand what it means - Opinion, which by it's definition precludes 'balance', it a primary component of a free press." Perhaps you could explain that concept to Herr bunch, who has desperately tried to silence the opinions of people like John Yoo. Let me guess, you have an excuse for that too, right? lol

During the week I live and work in the D.C. area and read Froomkin daily. I also read the WSJ, Inquirer, Newsweek and The Economist (in addition to several non-political/non-current events mags - yes, I'm a periodical junkie). Truth is that Froomkin is just not that good. His profound sense of self-righteousness and obvious political point of view get in the way of good writing and credibility. He should take a sabbatical and get some counseling in seeing both sides of a political issue. He's still young, so there's hope.

"I don't have a problem with reporters having an opinion or even with news organizations having a bias, it's when they have biases and deny them and claim to be 'objective' that i say nay." It's worse than that. Dingbats like bunch don't even feel the need to deny being 'objective' any longer. They are openly advocating that they need to be even MORE partisan. And then they wonder why half their potential audience won't even consider using their rags as fish wrap, let alone buy it for the content. It will be a happy day when they finally lock the doors at the Pravda branch on N. Broad St.
