Buy my book, now in paperback, and support me while I'm unemployed (for 4 days)

Well, the wish of many Attytood commenters has finally come true.
I'm unemployed.
But only for the next four work days. It's some (but not all) of the two weeks in unpaid furlough time I'm required to take in 2011. I'll have a job again on Sunday, Sept. 18. Until then, I'm not allowed to touch Attytood. You're on your own for discussing the great issues of the day and for crucifying Paul Krugman. You should be able to do those things without me.
And so, what better way to leave you than with a shameless plug for the fact that my most recent book -- The Backlash: Right-Wing Radicals, High-Def Hucksters and Paranoid Politics in the Age of Obama -- comes out in paperback (note the new cover above) this Tuesday. With the Tea Party still the tail that wags the dog of American politics -- 26 Percenters thwarting the will of the too-silent majority on every front from job creation to climate change -- The Backlash is as relevant now as it was when the hardcover version was released not so long ago, but now you can buy it at a reduced price but with more content; it features a new afterward on the 2010 election and other manmade disasters.
Slate called The Backlash one of the ten best non-fiction books of 2010, and even Michiko Kakutani of the New York Times, who hates virtually everything, found it "compelling," so at the new bargain price there's no longer an excuse not to check it out. If you like what I do here at Attytood, you'll really enjoy The Backlash, and if you hate what I do here, then it will be a cheap source of ammunition to hurl back at me some day.
In the meantime, enjoy your job, if you're lucky enough to still have one. See you Sunday...inshallah.

Im still waiting for you to mention your union brothers taking hostages in Washington state! Captain Terrific
Buy your book? What are you... a greedy, capitalist, profit seeking fat cat??? I thought those folks are the root of all evil in your left wing looney world of cart riders??? kelprod2
Don't worry Will, the tea baggers will still be here demonstrating their ignorance when you get back. Mr. Baseball- Hey foulball, the term is tea party. Please keep you sexual proclivities to yourself.

Oh swell. You'll have a job again on the 18th, but did you ever think of the victims of the Obama economy even once? Didn't you ever think that the unemployed might have work if not for people like yourself helping to get an unqualified, inexperienced Senator elected President? jmc
i can always use it to start a fire. palmyra21

And 2nd can you deny that Giulianni didn't use 9/11 for his personal gain? I mean really, Giuliani Security???? Huh??? Save your ire for that horrible man Rudy Giuliani. One person to make millions off the horrific tragedy of the day.
Les Ismore - ///Something tells me you and your nutty teabaKKKer friends didnt even read it. First, it was a blog post, not his op-ed.///
Something tells me that you, Les, didn't even read it. If you did you would know that Krugman himself said that he is disabling the comments section of the blog post.
//And 2nd can you deny that Giulianni didn't use 9/11 for his personal gain? I mean really, Giuliani Security???? Huh??? Save your ire for that horrible man Rudy Giuliani. One person to make millions off the horrific tragedy of the day. ///
Giulani was a former US attorney who, when running for mayor of a city with the nation's largest police force, made crime reduction his campaign cornerstone. He led the creation of CompStat to map crime and also initiated a crackdown on petty crime (based on the Broken Windows theory). He was in charge of the Office of Emergency Management in NYC, which was well versed in security and emergency preparedness due to the 1993 WTC bombing.
Say what you will about Giuliani's policies, cronyism, cheating on his wife, etc. there's plenty of things to pick on there. But to say he is a "fake hero" who "raced to cash in on the horror" shows a complete disregard for the truth. Its a shame you agree.
UPDATE: Krugman has made a recent post today trying to back track somewhat from his earlier comments, but stops short of offering an apology. Perhaps you should read it. - General, would you care to show what words you think actually show he was back tracking? Just not seeing it.
DuncanIdaho - General, I wasnt referring to the comments being off, I was referring to the fact that Giulianni, who located the NYC PD Crisis Command and Control Center in the actual building complex that was attacked some 9 years earlier, against the best advice of people who know better. Oh and he hired small time crook Bernie Kerik (is he in jail now?) as his Police Commissioner.
Les Ismore - //I was referring to the fact that Giulianni, who located the NYC PD Crisis Command and Control Center in the actual building complex that was attacked some 9 years earlier, against the best advice of people who know better. Neither of these things is even remotely mentioned, or even hinted at, in your original post. - "I mean really, Giuliani Security???? Huh???" I guess irony is dead, eh General?
Les Ismore - And of course, can we ever forget when Rudy was running for President and asked everyone to donate $9.11 to his campaign? That is one sick man.
Les Ismore
I thought your profits were being donated to the President's re-election campaign fund... AngryWhiteMale

You have a job, benefits, a retirement plan and plenty of notice to prepare. Shut up and stop your whining. Oh yeah, don't forget to thank your union for agreeing to your furlough. And did it ever occur to you that the "too silent" majority might actually agree with some of the tea party ideas and/or are disgusted with the empty suit in the White House and that's why there is no "Backlash" from them? jimmymack

I love how wingnuts so reliably think and feel what they're told to feel. I saw one commenter on a wingnut site say they agreed with Krugman's post, and the rest immediately circled the wagons and assaulted him. Fascinating example of groupthink, that none of you ever deviate from the party line. Susie from Philly

Les Ismore - Good Job and a great read. I just formed a PAC and will be raising money with beer bashes at union halls, pinochle tourneys and pizza parties. We will be ordering 1000 copies now that is in paperback. It will be the prize for our basket of books to help destroy the republican party for all time. I hope you eat too much, sleep too much and worry to little while on hiatus. All power to the people and Delenda GOP!!!!!
So you're asking people to buy something for which there is a (tiny) market, yet Glenn Beck selling gold shares is base, coarse and rooted in fear. Okay - got it - thanks Professor. m13sully
Captain Terrific, they didn't take hostages. The security guards recanted, and even if they did, so what? The Years of Shame seems like a great title for what happened after 9/11. For people who are supposed to hate the government so much, you all get mad as soon as the failings of government after 9/11 are pointed out. HandNik

Not that "shut up" isn't the typical response to the uninformed "conservative" when their carefully constructed alternate reality is challenged by someone with actual "facts" instead of baseless allegation and innuendo. For "conservatives" their Ivory Tower Ideology must trump all other things, including "reality," or else it might call into question their entire myopic world view. H.L. Puttgrass

"The Years of Shame" - in many ways it has been. Hot about the clip of Whitman and Guiliani, shown last night, announcing that the air quality at Ground Zero was not a concern, was all good. The people who used 9/11 as justification for conquest should be ashamed -- sure they are richer, but they should feel shame. Murrayman

So, now the Libs are calling everybody who disagrees with Barry's policies "Tea Baggers"...beats "racists" I guess. But really doesn't the new "jobs plan" just reflect that famous quote of the insane, what is it, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? And now they won't even call it a "Stimulus"..why...if the first one was so successful and "kept things from getting worse" shouldn't they be promoting it as "the same great program that saved us" or are they afraid of being called "INSANE"!!! LOL!!!!! sarah89
Atkins, You do wear tea bags as accessories, do you not? DavidAG
Sarah, do you get all your talking points from Alaska? The new Stimulus is different from the last Stimulus, it pays for itself. Yet, the previous Stimulus did work; the problem with it was that it was too small. The previous Stimulus was designed for an economy which shrunk by 4% but it was determined that the economy shrunk by 9% in the last two quarters of G W Bush's administration, such the need for the new Stimulus. Do you really want our economy to shrink again? Do you hate America? Do you hate the Working Class? Do want to continue the Class Warfare against the Middle Class which has been conducted against it for the pass thirty years? Look up the facts; get on the right side, not the Right Side, just because they say they are Right does not make them correct! DavidAG
I figured it out...liberals are the ones with their hands out and conservatives are the ones protecting their wallets. Count me in the latter thank you. And DavidAG, did mommy give back your internet access? TKL008
TKL, Smug little mind you have there, Conservatives are the ones going into my pocket and have been robbing me with their scams, robbing the S&Ls in the 80's, drove them out of business, then robbing us with IPOs in the 90's, the 00's we all know was going after yours and mine equity in our own homes. I seem to recall how smug liberals were in 2008. How certain that their savior had just been elected, and how they were swept into power and that would restore the earth to it's rightful state. How sad it must be for them now to realize that their vision has ALWAYS been wrong, and that their hold on power, so fleeting, is gone already, and will be completely out of their hands very very soon. IggleFan68- They were good times Iggle. Until we realized that the Rethugs and teabaKKKers hated our newly elected President more than they loved America. Pretty sad when you think of it that elected officials would rather inflict pain on their own constituents rather than alleviate the suffering from the 8 years of Republican incompetence. Just why do you hate America and Americans so?
Les Ismore
"I seem to recall how smug liberals were in 2008. How certain that their savior had just been elected, and how they were swept into power and that would restore the earth to it's rightful state. How sad it must be for them now to realize that their vision has ALWAYS been wrong, and that their hold on power, so fleeting, is gone already, and will be completely out of their hands very very soon." Translation: How foolish of liberals and a majority of independents to have thought that electing a relatively moderate Democrat to restore the absurd imbalances in the previous administration, that lent momentum to structural forces leading to the Great Recession could possibly overcome the absolute monolithic power of the increasingly delusional, paranoid, gunslinging Nabobs ruling the GOP. How sad it is for them to realize the hold these corrupt, lying, deceptive rulers on the unabashed ignorant, paranoid, swept over voting base is absolute and how the notion that their failed supply-side policies continue to rise from the dead, once seemingly preposterous, is now all but foregone. Murrayman

Translation: I hate 50-70% of the country. Nice that you call conservatives "unabashed ignorant, paranoid". Did you forget that you had complete control for 2 years?? Could have passed any bill you felt like. Obama + Liberal Congress = Epic Fail. You couldn't even get done what you wanted to get done. IggleFan68
IggleFan I don't if every Conservative individual necessarily is 'unabashed ignorant, paranoid, but you can sure bet that these are the official stances of your party right now. Take, for example, the notion that the US is 'bankrupt'. Sound familiar. Every GOPer is screaming it endlessly. If it were true interest rates would soar, as investors would demand a interest premium for the risk. What have interest rates, and 10 years in particular, done in the past month, and over the course of the last two years? Dropped like a stone. = delusional, paranoid. Murrayman- //What have interest rates, and 10 years in particular, done in the past month, and over the course of the last two years? Dropped like a stone. = delusional, paranoid. ///
Interest rates have "dropped like a stone" over the last decade more because of a very loose monetary policy by this and the previous Bush administration. - Okay, GT, you're beyond help. Forgeting for a second the ridiculous assertion that the Executive branch greatly effects monetary policy, the notion the Fed can in any meaningful way affect the interest rates across the yield curve is bunk. The Fed can directly control one rate -- ONE RATE. The market determines the yield on longer dated on the runs. Here I'll dumb it down: Demand up, supply relatively fixed, price goes up, and ... which way does yield go down? Turgidson why don't you go ahead and explain in detail why yield goes down when the price of a bond goes up? See, that's the thing -- in order to buy the Conservative bunk, you have to be ignorant. HEre's another idiotic line from the right: they make you think that the fiscal year and the calendar year are one and the same. They have you believe that the minute Obama took office every dollar of increased debt was his responsibility. And you buy it.

I don't see you disagreeing with my points Murrayman. Clearly, you must be very very disappointed in the Democratic party for their failure to get anything substantive done during their period of full control. As a conservative, I'm outraged that they spent that time working on a useless Healthcare bill (which just about created the Tea Party, btw), instead of focusing on fixing the economy and creating jobs. IggleFan68
"As a conservative, I'm outraged that they spent that time working on a useless Healthcare bill (which just about created the Tea Party, btw)". Actually Iggle, the teabakkers festered into existence on the day they realized a black guy really won the election. Nice try though, ACA came well after that. Les Ismore- "As a conservative, I'm outraged that they spent that time working on a useless Healthcare bill (which just about created the Tea Party, btw)". . . . . . As a liberal, I'm outraged at the time wasted on the 'useless' bill as well. If anything, it will only hasten the day we enact a single-payer system. btw, the Tea Party originated in genuine protests against government bail-outs of Wall Street and private enterprise (TARP, GM, etc) in early 2009. Heck, you could call me an original Tea Partier in that sense, but the movement quickly became an excuse for the Obamaphobic nativists to vent their paranoia. It will be a different game if the GOP wins the White House next year and is forced by their corporate allegiance to continue what Bush/Obama started. Tea Party? You ain't seen nothing yet.
Nice post, MSL -- I think we agree. Les -- by your definition of racist, YOU are now a racist. You are assuming that the Tea Party is composed of people who hate black people and exist as a political force based on racism, and that couldn't be more wrong (in my opinion). Read MSL's post. There are clearly racists in the Tea Party. As there are in the Republican Party. And the Democrat Party. And the AFL/CIO. And the NFL. And Major League Baseball. And in teacher's unions. IggleFan68
The US have had a loose monetary policy since Jimmy Carter. We have had deficit spending since 1962 except 5 years (2 Nixon and 3 Clinton). Blame the we want society on both ends. But this is the logic of how we got to here: JFK needed the money for Vietnam, LBJ Great Society, Ford inflation, Carter joblessness, Reagan Getting people back to work, Bush Sr cut spending but not enough, Clinton Zero inflation was seen as great good than deficits, Bush war, Obama keeping himself in office, cause if you aint a lawyer, teacher or in an union you aint getting help. Fisher
Geez.

I think Obama watched that movie Dave too many times. Sometimes those factory visits have a tendency to reveal how incompetent a president is when it comes to firing up the economy. Now that Obama has wasted 500 million dollars of the peoples' money on a losing enterprise owned by his political and financial backers maybe now it would be appropriate for Rev Wright to say that the chickens have come home to roost, ...... and poop on Obama's head. RufusG
Obama's 'green' energy program is just that. Plenty of 'green' for his close friends and allies while the American people foot the bill.

Actually I'm guessing that Will is working on a response to a Republican winning over the seat resigned by Anthony Weiner. You remember o'l Tony don't you? That hunk, hunk, hunk of Democratic rhetoric. RufusG
