The people who believe Obama is the Antichrist are perhaps jumping to conclusions, but they're not nuts.

-- Newsweek (yes, THE Newsweek), Nov. 15, 2008, in a story simply headlined, "Is Obama the Antichrist?"

Uh, actually, these people are kind of nuts -- and I don't think it would have been at all out of bounds for Newsweek to come out and, using more polite terminology, say so. Unlike some journalists, I don't have a problem with the media reporting on the existence of conspiracy theories -- they are part of the fabric of American life, for better or worse -- but the goal is to put them in some context. This one seems waaay too credulous -- am I missing something here?

We've discussed this many times here: Thank God America is a place where people are free to practice their beliefs -- no matter how bizarre -- and free to speak about them. That doesn't mean a major media org like Newsweek needs to hand over a megaphone to a fringe idea that, at its core, is pretty odious.

good work, Genius. good work, Genius. Care to find any examples of even the dastardly "MSM" that say "Obama is Christ?" Care to find any examples of even the dastardly "MSM" that say "Obama is Christ?" Oh, right, there aren't any. Oh, right, there aren't any. Just a bunch of wingnuts in the marginalized minority waiting for the waaaaaahmbulance. Just a bunch of wingnuts in the marginalized minority waiting for the waaaaaahmbulance.

"kind of nuts...---}}} Kind of? Whaaaaaaa? Kind of? People who think that Obama is the anti-Christ are "kind of nuts?" Sorry, Will, people who think Obama is the anti-Christ are lunatics.

Does anyone else see the irony of an Attyood column starting with the title "Balanced Journalism"?

I'm waiting for the headline "Sarah Palin: Anti-christ or Second Hitler?". Probably an old formula that started sometime in the 30s.

Why do you need Newsweek to call them nuts? You can't draw your own conclusions? I think it's a nicely phrased understatement, especially using the word "perhaps".

I guess libs don't like the taste of the same poison they've been spewing for eight years. George Bush had to put up with wild accusations from nutjobs that have no basis in fact, so why shouldn't Barack Obama.

Does anyone find it telling that bryanc appears to have no understanding of the difference between a blog and journalism?

Will, did you get enough sleep last night? I mean really...these guys are trying to sell a few magazines in order to put some food on the table. As bad as the newspaper business is I can only imagine how low readership is for the folks at Newsweek.

Wow, Genie, that's your evidence that the media is reporting that Obama is the Messiah, that some pundit used hyperbole?

A blog is the crutch liberal journalists use to spew their agenda. You get the story in the paper and the story they wanted to tell in the blog. Simple as that.

It's pretty amusing how fast the wacko right-wing has turned into what appears to be a panty-waist whiny cult with one foot in the bible and the other in Mein Kampf - either way, they have no foot in the 21st century. Here's a clue - pick some candidates who don't believe the earth is 6000 years old, that would be a good start. Hey dimwits - 66 million people from most of the country (excluding the white-only poor rural dirt holes in Appalachia) soundly repudiated the spend-everything, tax nothing, constitution-is-just-a-suggestion group of criminals in a resounding fashion (for the second election on a row). Keep it up....one or two more elections with you trotting out these idiots like Palin, Romney and Gooliani were absolultely assure that we will be reading about the GOP - in the chapter right after the one on the Whigs and Free Soil party. You lost the West, the NE, the Mid-Atlantic, the rust belt, and parts of the south.....but but but it's a PRECEPTION problem.....That's true - most of america (apparently the REAL america) has the perception that you are incompetent, sleazy bible-thumping (when it benefits you) xenophobic ideologues whose idea of a "person of color" is a country club member with a good tan.....Enjoy the wilderness.

Proves your point? Would that be that the GOP has fallen so far out of touch with the citizens of this country as to lose areas of the country that have never voted Democrat EVER? If that was your point, you made a good one. Now, let's see if your party has the common sense to look at this whipping and use it to get a real platform, or whether they will pander even more to the lunatic xenophobes and look to Rush Limberger for leadership....So far, common sense seems to be lacking.

"excluding the white-only poor rural dirt holes in Appalachia" It's amazing to me how some people would rail against the accusation that they are bigoted, yet feel that it is ok to post this type of trash. How many times have I seen "dumb redneck", "Pennsyltucky", "trailer park trash", etc. Would it be similarly ok to have derogatory terms against inner-city people? Would it be ok to change LJL's sentence to "excluding the black-only poor urban dirt holes in the ghetto."? As a person who now lives in the mid-state area, who was born, raised, educated and spent the majority of his life in Philly...I have seen both sides of the coin. I guarantee you that your bogpted notion of "dumb Appalachian hicks" is as far from reality as can be. Sure, you have all types in rural areas...just like you do in urban areas, but it'd behoove you to learn about that which you write. I think that montani semper liberi, who apparently lives in West Va (that'd be Appalachia, LJL) would agree with me.

I think we should just be happy that Kal-El, son of Jor-El, has come from Kypton to save us. Oh, wait, a blog on some website somewhere has a "Messiah Watch"? Well, hey, that's clearly an indication that the entire media establishment believes Obama is the Messiah. Yes, this is what passes for "analysis" in the depths of the marginalized minority. Good stuff. No wonder you guys are wandering defeated through the wilderness. Watch out for the helicopters. Oh, and those aren't jackbooted thugs shooting at you. It's the governor of Alaska.

But Will, Obama rose from the sea (Hawaii), has seven heads (his cabinet-to-be), and ten horns (news networks in the tank for him).

Well, hey, that's clearly an indication that the entire media establishment believes in global warming. Yes, this is what passes for "analysis" in the depths of the liberal lemming media. Good stuff. If Obama is a anarchist, what then is GWB? The emperor of all evil dooers aka satan himself. Or we could simply call Bush the Anti-Midus touch guy. Everything he touches turns to SH!T!

Talking point sleuth "Does anyone find it telling that bryanc appears to have no understanding of the difference between a blog and journalism?" Another fantastic example of TPS not being able to discuss anything on merits of the discussion. Have you gotten a chance to look up the true meaning of straw man yet, TPS? Because you just demonstrated to the board a fine example of the (weak) debate technique.

From The Times U.K. July 25, 2008 And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness. The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow. When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?” timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/gerard_baker/article4392846.ece

Obama is the Anti-Christ? So THAT is how a black man got elected POTUS! I always thought it would take some kind of divine intervention to make this happen. It didn't happen because the guy who was president before started an unnecissary war, tanked the economy and ruined our reputation around the world. No. OBAMA IS THE ANTI-CHRIST!! OBAMA IS THE ANTI-CHRIST!! RUN FOR THE HILLS! JUDGEMENT DAY IS AT HAND!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
