Assassination in AZ

POSTED: Sunday, January 9, 2011, 3:46 PM

All of us -- myself included -- are still reeling emotionally from yesterday's nightmare in Tucson. We express our deep condolences are for those who lost loved ones. and we pray for those like Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who are fighting for their life. There will be plenty of time for talking about the rhetoric of rage in America, and when we do have that conversation I hope it will be a rational one. But this afternoon is a time to focus on grief and the tragedy of what was taken from this earth in just a matter of seconds.

The loss of Christina Green -- born in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001 -- is sad beyond belief.

Geez, beetle, according to all reports this guy wasn't anything outstanding, so why should he have been locked up? I mean he was sane enough to buy a gun legally. The NRA would back him up on that, I am sure. Of course, in AZ, anyone short of Charlie Manson could buy one. And you must be kidding about rightwing rhetoric. Yeah, it's all those progressives carrying hitler pictures of Obama and going to rallies carrying guns and yelling they want their country back. Oh, wait, it wasn't progressives was it? Tell me about the guy who murdered two Pittsburgh cops last year because he said Obama was going to take his guns away. he got his legally, as well. Moron.

Will, I guess you missed Olbermann's "Special Comment" last night. Why MSNBC felt the need to bring him in last night, I don't know, but he spouted off, and it was not what this country needs right now. Everyone is pointing fingers but everyone needs to go back to their rooms and not come out until they're ready to be nice to each other.

Nice Bunch. You knew exactly what you were "decrying" was exactly what would happen. Gets more "hits". More buzz. You're "plea" fools no one with any sense. Shameless. Let's wait a couple of days to find out what really happened and who this monster is. Remember, first reports had the congresswoman dead. Initial reports are rarley accurate or reliable.

"Rhetoric of rage"??? Will is already laying the groundwork for when he chimes in with the other political opportunists on the left who say we need to tone down the political rhetoric, but yell from the roof tops that Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, Fox, talk radio, etc. are all to blame for the AZ shooting.

Did I hear correctly that the 9 year old girl is Dallas Green's grandaughter?

As a former college teacher, I know what it is like to have someone in your class who scares you (and, in my case, scared my wife even more, based on my description). But I also know how difficult it would be to turn in someone who simply behaves oddly, looks threatening, and keeps his hood on in math class. My guy did not as far as I know go off the deep end and shoot anyone, but I know that after I busted him for cheating on the final, I worried for weeks, especially when I was on campus. The kid who shot Giffords and the others was clearly mentally unbalanced. The unhealthy political climate just provided him with a path for his antisocial violence. (Nevertheless, I think the nation would be much better off if everyone toned down the political infighting.)

Apparently he was incensed that Giffords brushed off some obsessed question he had about "language" by replying in Spanish. Obviously a diseased paranoid schizoid as I noted yesterday, amigo. Paranoia, not politics, is the evil here. It's just coincidental that irrational but palpable paranoia has helped invigorate the Palin/Tea Party movement since Obama ran for office, manifesting in loaded guns at presumably "peaceful" rallies, crosshairs on maps, etc. As I noted yesterday, I expect that element of the movement to fade away in the wake of this tragedy. The "connection" here is that we can all see now that guns and paranoia don't mix well in civilized discourse.

It's pretty amazing that almost all of the comments are pointing fingers. Many are taking Will to task for things he didn't post or that he might post in the future. I think if he said "It was cold today" the posts would be the same. Why not instead pray for those injured and killed and their families.

I think jmc is correct. There are so many on the Left who are acting like political vultures.

Cursing the vulture, nature's sanitation worker, won't prevent the next road kill, though. Who was driving the car recklessly? All of us.

So if political discourse were civil, Laughner's insanity wouldn't have manifested itself violently?
