OK, I've scanned the news I missed today, and there's nothing new! McCain is still clueless, Obama still coming up with a new funny-but-not-that-funny soundbite of the day, Wall Street still flip-flopping like (fill in the blank). That gives me an excuse to post an eyewitness report that a real writer, Mike Sokolove (buy the book!) emailed me this week on the surreal experience of hanging out in the Eagles' bar of the most unfootballed out city in America, Los Angeles. Too bad for me because I drove by this joint about 6 or 7 times while out there on vacation this summer and had no idea, which makes me the John McCain of tourists.
Here's the Sokolove report:
Thought I'd send you this out-of-town report from The Shack in Santa Monica, the "official" Eagles bar in Southern California. I'm in LA on a story and found my way there for the game last nite, and I've gotta say, it was more fun than any stadium experience. Full of DPs, displaced Philadelphians, mostly LA working stiffs -- grips, soundmen -- although Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia were in the house, in their birds jerseys, as nearly everyone but me was (I came unprepared, although I did happen to have my hat from Voltacos hoagie shop in Ocean City). Napkins thrown in the air on all real or perceived Cowboys penalties, more ear-splitting crowd noise than the Linc, several regular tables had Eagles shrines of old Randall bobbleheads and the like -- and one table for reasons unknown with lots of Wawa branded paraphernalia -- , a guy wondering around with his Calif license plate around his neck (F TO 81 . . .guess the Golden State censors are not so clever) . . . the guy next to me at halftime says to me as his dinner arrives: this is going to be a great halftime, we've got the lead, I've got a cheesesteak, only thing that would make it more perfect is if I had a lapdance. (Just to be clear, not available at this place; it's a beach bar, although a great many blocks from the actual beach.)Well, a better second half would have made it more perfect, but I'd definitely recommend this place to Eagles travelers during football season. Run by a guy named Pat, from Havertown. Have to arrive a couple hours before gametime because much of the small place is reserved for regulars.
I always thought it must be terrible to be a football fan in L.A. -- guess not.

Will...where did you get that picture? That is not the same "The Shack." That one is in Playa Del Rey and is not an Eagles bar as far as I know. There is another Eagles bar in Marina Del Rey off Lincoln Blvd. called Sports Harbor. Being an Eagles fan in LA is not so bad because there is no local team. Everyone has some out of town team that they are rooting for, which makes it kind of fun. You also don't get the massive negativity from a city full of Philadelphia fans. Whenever I come back to Philly I am floored when I turn on WIP and can't believe the tone of the discussions.
Has Obama taken a position on the AIG bailout, yet? I know he is on the record as not “second guessing it" and not "supporting it." So he is somewhere between supporting it and not supporting it. (If he had high level advisors from AIG and hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from them would that help him make up his mind? He seemed to have a clear position on Fannie and freddie, after all.) ---- As to the issue at hand, IASIP is one of the funniest shows on TV. (Even if it makes us look nuts.)
I just scanned the blog and there is shocking - NOTHING new or interesting from Bunch. What is Tierney really paying you to do? Maybe you can help your kids with their homework for once, instead of coming up with this garbage.
Is Sokolove writing a book about Reagan? Someone who was there that night told me they heard a guy yell out "win one for the Gipper"
OK, fixed. Sokolove could be writing a Reagan book -- 1,000 other people have.
As i recall, bon, Obama came out months ago with a warning about Wall Street and how it was going to go. Guess you were too busy writing inane posts to see that.
thats 1000 people more than you, who can say they are "authors"
mike I: Yeah, NObama was out there warning us all about Wall St months ago? Wow, what a brilliant guy...more like a Monday morning QB. The economy's troubles have been going on for well over a year now so for him to come out "months ago" is not that impressive. Besides, Fannie/Freddie have been pumping money into his campaign as well as having his advisors from AIG, and look, poof they've both failed. What's his solution?? We'll just have to wait for someone in govt to take action, and then NObama will claim that was his position on things all along. Get a clue bozo. Will: I think you are a closeted homosexual that really has a stiff one for McCain, you can't stop referencing him in every one of your pathetic, useless, self-serving diatribes about nothing. Keep suppressing your true urges and desires.
A 1,000.... man you'd have a better chance making the Eagle's squad than your chances of writing a best seller on Reagan. Reagan is dead. I'll tell you what, if you were to change Ronnie's name to Sarah you might have soething. Who would know the difference?
Sarah Palin will be yesterday's news in February. Hey SSB -- check this out: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Jukebox-America/William-Bunch/e/9780312110130. So...you're wrong yet again.
keep up the good work bpphilly
That's nice...censor me. Will Bunch still loves dudes. Idiot Commy paper.
Ricky, you forgot to mention excrement in your post. legatus will be so disappointed.
philly2flag & R. French: Will is currently drawing up plans for Nov. 5th's "race war" with the phony FAT-imah Ali after NObama gets his come-up-ins. HAHAHAHA. Will, go back to blogging about you heyday with all your men at Studio 54 in the 70's eating ectasy and "experimenting." What a joke this guy is!
Will, writers are supposed to have an instinct.... a sixth sense if you will. My feeling is that win or lose come February we will have not heard the last of Sarah. All the Adlai Stevenson supporters couldn't get that "genius" elected. On the other hand we elected a govenor of Arkansas to run his country for 8 years.
Bottom half of the ninth Brad Lidge....... I get nothing. I guess I have to watch the rest of the game.
