Also victorious last night: Homophobia

POSTED: Wednesday, November 3, 2010, 11:37 AM

Wake up, America:

All three Iowa Supreme Court justices up for retention election have been ousted from the bench.

Around 54 percent of Iowans voted not to retain each of the three judges: Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and associate justices Michael J. Streit and David L. Baker. The campaign for the judges ouster was based on the court’s unanimous 2009 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa.

There were 74 judges, including three Supreme Court justices, on the ballot Tuesday. Only the Supreme Court justices, however, came anywhere close to being removed from the bench.

The highly charged campaign featured more than $1 million in spending against the judges from national anti-gay organizations like the Mississippi-based American Family Association, Washington, D.C.-based Family Research Council, Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund, Georgia-based Faith & Freedom Coalition and New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage. The campaign culminated in a 20-city bus tour across Iowa.

The groups pushing for ouster promised that this was simply the first battle in a nationwide war against gay marriage and gay rights.

But, but....didn't they hear Jon Stewart's moving speech on Saturday?

Will, after your party losing the House, this is all you have? I was hoping for a snarky posting on Christine O'Donnell losing, or Harry Reid not losing. No more Alan Grayson, no more Nancy Pelosi, No more Patrick Murphy! Oh what a beautiful morning!

Opposing gay marriage is not equivalent to homophobia.

I think it's a good thing when judges are held accountable by their constituency. It has nothing to do with homophobia.

Opposing gay marriage is the exact equivalent to homophobia, since gay marriage doesn't affect anyone outside of their marriage. I am amazed by the immediate failure of Republicans to take advantage of these elections. They're immediately declaring it a victory for their views instead of a vote against the Democrats. It's the same exact flaw that Democrats had, except that the Democrats just wouldn't communicate to the voters. Republicans are still campaigning because they have lost the ability to govern. Independents don't care about health care, tax cuts, or a whole lot of the Tea Party agenda. Independents care about jobs, and we'll see if Republicans will actually try to compromise on that.

{{{---}}} Diaper change on aisle 2. {{{---}}} If I'm not mistaken, bile.atkins is even more obsessed with excretory function today than usual. That's at least four references in his last three or so posts. One can only wonder why "winning" increases bile's scatological fantasies.

According to bunch and his ilk, if you oppose a "progressive" idea/person, you have a phobia or are racist or are homophobic.

For the record, I support civil unions provided they have the same rights as married people.

"Opposing gay marriage is not equivalent to homophobia." Agreed, depending on the rationale, but the groups that forced these justices out also have stated they want to roll back "gay rights." That is unconscionable.

{{{---}}} It has nothing to do with homophobia. {{{---}}} Good point, Nehmith; cause, you know, clearly denying gays the same rights afforded non gays has nothing whatsoever to do with discrimination.

{{{---}}} Agreed, depending on the rationale, {{{---}}} Really? Leaving aside the incorrect characterization, made twice in this thread alone, that you equal opposition to same-sex marriage to homophobia - what kind of opposition to same-sex marriage do you think is not homophobic, Will? The opposition based in the notion that somehow gays marrying is going to affect the marriages of non-gays? What do you think lies behind such obviously illogical reasoning if not homophobia?
