Alex Chilton, 1950-2010

POSTED: Thursday, March 18, 2010, 9:41 AM

Alex Chilton was a god of power pop. He never had a big hit after a couple of chart-toppers with The Box Tops in Memphis in the late 1960s (including "The Letter," the shortest No. 1 song of the rock era....look it up!), but his influence loomed over modern music until the day he died, which was yesterday of a heart attack at age 59. If you don't believe me, just do a Google blog search this morning on the phrase "children by the millions" (from the remarkable tribute song "Alex Chilton" by the Replacements.) His best music was so ahead of its time that it didn't get the radio play or sales it deserved -- especially with the group Big Star in the early 1970s. Listen to "September Gurls" (at bottom) and see what I mean.

And have a good weekend, which will be longer than usual for me because of one of my final book research junkets. I can't imagine anything important will happen this weekend :-) -- but if it does, you can talk about it here:

What a moron....no Tps, their estimate is ~preliminary~...i.e. based on rosy scenarios which might or might not come to pass. "Preliminary" does not equal "estimate"...are there any other words that you need help with. Sheeesh.

Apparently Tps believes that the CBO Director was so stupid that he he sent Pelosi a letter saying [Tps paraphrase] "Mrs. Pelosi, the estimate is an estimate"

I am truly amazed at how dumb TPS and Les really are. The statement that this bill will reduce the deficit is so incredible it is laughable. And that is exactly why people don't like it. Anyone who thinks rationally knows this; how these two can be so secure in their own arrogant misperception is beyond me.

Mirror: Oh how silly of rational Americans not to listen to you. Of course you are right and the CBO is wrong. I bet you can just feel it in your gut...or maybe you can tell by looking at pictures of the bill. hahahahhaahahahaha!!!! Sorry dude, but facts are NOT on your side. In fact they havent been for some time now. Get over it and enjoy the fact true Americans will cheer the biggest deficit reduction bill in the history of the US. Of course you wouldnt understand since that is something that Regressives only talk about but for some reason have failed to master in the last 50 years or so.

---}}} based on rosy scenarios which might or might not come to pass. {{{--- LOL! So, now the CBO is basing their estimates on "rosy scenarios?" Wow, now they're attacking the CBO (after relying on CBO estimates when they worked to Republican favor). Who could have predicted that? Here's the real laugher. People who claim to be "fiscal conservatives" are running scared that the Dems might actually pass a health care bill that would reduce the deficit - as the CBO estimates. Why? Because it would be a huge hit for the Republican Party. Like I said, nothing exposes the Fraudytood of an ARt quite like facts. Oh, and btw, legatus, all budget projections are estimates, by nature. I respect Ryan because he's made proposals that actually take on cost reduction with policies that the rest of the Republican Party are running away from - because they threaten the partisan expediency of most Republicans, but his implication that there is something Democrat-specific about politicians spinning CBO estimates to support political goals is laughable. The CBO makes a best effort to estimate the costs of the bill. Their estimate is that it will reduce the deficit. Deal with it.

Now the latest nuttiness from Glenn Beck: If congress votes for HCR on Sunday it is an affront to God! Man I love this guy! http://thinkprogress.org/2010/03/18/king-sabbath-vote/

---}}} Apparently Tps believes that the CBO Director was so stupid that he he sent Pelosi a letter {{{--- Not at all, legatus. You can't be too careful about presuming intelligence on the part of any politician, including Pelosi. The estimate is an estimate. The estimate is that the bill will reduce budget deficits. Deal with it. Yes, it is preliminary: contingent on whether the language of the final draft matches the relevant language of the previous drafts. LOL! As a "fiscal conservative," you should be applauding the news. Of course, not that you're an ARt, but ARts would, obviously, be spinning the news because they'd be devastated at the notion of the Dems passing a budget-reducing bill. Just like ARts complain that Clinton, Carter, and LBJ all had better records on spending as a percentage of revenue and debt as a percentage of GDP than the Republican presidents that preceded or followed them (Reagan, Ford, Bush I, or Bush II).

"all budget projections are estimates" No sh....er, kidding Sherlock. However they have to be based on ~something~. The CBO is charged with preparing estimates based on variables provided by Congress....variables like elimination of waste and fraud in Medicare. If you really believe that the gov't will, all of a sudden, miraculously be able to detect fraud (much less eliminate it), then you are taking up residence alongside Johnny Depp's character in Wonderland. That is only ~one~ such variable.

"Yes, it is preliminary: contingent on whether the language of the final draft matches the relevant language of the previous drafts." To be more accurate, "This estimate is therefore preliminary, pending a review of the language of the reconciliation proposal". Presently there is no reconciled version, there is the Senate version on which the House is to vote. The CBO cannot put any figures out because there is no bill, no specifics yet, just talk. It is all a 3 card monty game.

And here it is...the actual table from CBO that shows how the budget will DECLINE over the next 10 years http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/documents/2010/03/cbo-report-on-health-care-reform-bill-to-speaker-pelosi.php?page=6 Regressive heads are exploding all over America!
