Alex Chilton, 1950-2010

POSTED: Thursday, March 18, 2010, 9:41 AM

Alex Chilton was a god of power pop. He never had a big hit after a couple of chart-toppers with The Box Tops in Memphis in the late 1960s (including "The Letter," the shortest No. 1 song of the rock era....look it up!), but his influence loomed over modern music until the day he died, which was yesterday of a heart attack at age 59. If you don't believe me, just do a Google blog search this morning on the phrase "children by the millions" (from the remarkable tribute song "Alex Chilton" by the Replacements.) His best music was so ahead of its time that it didn't get the radio play or sales it deserved -- especially with the group Big Star in the early 1970s. Listen to "September Gurls" (at bottom) and see what I mean.

And have a good weekend, which will be longer than usual for me because of one of my final book research junkets. I can't imagine anything important will happen this weekend :-) -- but if it does, you can talk about it here:

TPS - so true about Boehner. This guy is a embodiment of very bad impression of a slick politician. The guy doesnt even know his facts. Put him, Beck, Palin in the same room and they cant come up with a single rational argument. Go Palin 2012!!!!

---}}} The guy doesnt even know his facts. {{{--- Gotta disagree with you there, Les. He knows the facts. That's why he's so good at making statements that avoid stating anything factual. He knows that stating facts will undermine his political agenda. And it works. All you need to do is read the Attytood comments and you'll see example after example of (1) people too thick to evaluate the facts, (2) people who are so partisan they don't care about the facts, or (3) freeloaders who are more than willing to benefit from what government provides, but unwilling to sacrifice for either their benefit or for the benefit of their fellow citizens. For folks like those, facts simply don't matter.

TPS - Agreed. You are so right. Just like Cantor knows the facts and even Gingrich too. It is just a lack of character in all of them. Very unAmerican. Real, hardworking Americans will get this done once and for all.

Oh, and Les - a prediction. Those very same ARts that were here on Attytood posting CBO estimates when they supported their arguments against HCR will now attack the CBO estimates. Republicans and ARts, now deprived of any reasonable argument based on "fiscal conservatism" will now, suddenly, after months and months of crying about "fiscal conservatism" manage to forget their overwhelming focus on "fiscal conservatism." It really will be amusing to see just how devastated they will be at the news that the CBO has said that a major policy initiative will reduce future deficits. Nothing exposes as toady and their "fiscal conservative" fraudytood quite like facts, Les.

BTW. Go 'Nova. Does anyone know why Fisher and Reynolds weren't in the starting lineup?

TPS - Fisher and Reynolds are out because Wright is "making a teaching point". 4th and 5th players this year with some kind of discipline problem. Go 'Nova (but TPS I am surprised you are a fan of Vanilla-Nova).

I'm a Philly fan, birdie, and you have to admire Nova's program and their coach. Any Big 5 team has my support.

I am sure the new argument will be that it is unconstitutional...hahaha. That will be a hoot for sure. I think we can just sit back and watch Swift"Veteran", bil atk, bag-o-wind and the other regulars collective heads explode. Funny to watch how Drudge will handle this setback to the Regressive Hate American agenda as well. My money is that Drudge wont even mention it. I might even take the day off to watch Beck cry for America over this. Oh, and GO TEMPLE!!!! (and 'nova)

Les, you sure love to write your left wing dribble. Are you sure America can hold on to a smart left wingnut like you. You might be too smart for the rest of us. You would love it in France. By the way, there absolutely will be a constitutional challenge and there should be. Mandatory health insurance is definitely unconstitutional.

In a letter sent to Speaker Pelosi this morning, CBO Director Doug Elmendorf remarked: “Although CBO completed a preliminary review of legislative language prior to its release, the agency has not thoroughly examined the reconciliation proposal to verify its consistency with the previous draft. This estimate is therefore preliminary, pending a review of the language of the reconciliation proposal, as well as further review and refinement of the budgetary projections.”....... House Budget Committee Ranking Republican Paul Ryan (WI) issued the following statement: “The Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that there is currently no official cost estimate. Yet House Democrats are touting to the press – and spinning for partisan gain – numbers that have not been released and are impossible to confirm. Rep. James Clyburn stated he was “giddy” about these unsubstantiated numbers. This is the latest outrageous exploitation by the Majority – in this case abusing the confidentiality of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office – to pass their massive health care overhaul at any cost.”

Wow, that's deep, legatus. You mean that the CBO's estimate is an..... estimate? Profound.
