Alex Chilton was a god of power pop. He never had a big hit after a couple of chart-toppers with The Box Tops in Memphis in the late 1960s (including "The Letter," the shortest No. 1 song of the rock era....look it up!), but his influence loomed over modern music until the day he died, which was yesterday of a heart attack at age 59. If you don't believe me, just do a Google blog search this morning on the phrase "children by the millions" (from the remarkable tribute song "Alex Chilton" by the Replacements.) His best music was so ahead of its time that it didn't get the radio play or sales it deserved -- especially with the group Big Star in the early 1970s. Listen to "September Gurls" (at bottom) and see what I mean.

And have a good weekend, which will be longer than usual for me because of one of my final book research junkets. I can't imagine anything important will happen this weekend :-) -- but if it does, you can talk about it here:

I like the little blank face shot above the comment removed. I think Attytood should require a photo for posters - if nothing else it would only be fair to Bunch who takes a beating on a regular basis based on his photo. Wonder how many people would actually have the stones to put their photo on the site.

And speaking of HCR, the CBO scoring is in and we are DELIGHTED! "the final package costs $940 billion over 10 years. It reduces the deficit by $130 billion in the first decade, and $1.2 trillion in the second. The bill will bring coverage to 32 million Americans, while extending Medicare solvency by at least 9 years." Wow! Now other than the fact that the black guy is pushing this through, what is your issue?

Say, Les. I'm trying to figure out why a "fiscal conservative" would be opposed to a plan that the CBO says will reduce the deficit even as it provides access to health insurance to more people. I can think of two possible explanations: (1) the supposed "fiscal conservative" is actually a Republican toady, (2) the supposed "fiscal conservative" is actually a libertarian extremist, who goes ballistic at the notion that some of his precious expendable income might go towards helping a sick child or elderly person get medical care (even as, on a daily basis, he enjoys the fruits of a public society built through taxes). Can you think of any other explanations, Les?

So Bag-o-Cheetohs...I guess you get all of your information from John Bohner???? I have to say that your child-like wonder at the mutterings of Boehner, Beck and Malking are kind of cute in a sick kind of way.

----}}} "They're still going to spend a trillion dollars so we impose government-run health care on the American people," House Republican Leader John Boehner said. {{{--- LOL! How pathetic is that? Sure, it will save money - but it will cost money, even though it will cost less than it saves, and of course it will cost even more money if we keep the status quo, but it will cost money. So, even thought it will reduce the deficit, I'm against it, because it will cost money, and because I"m a "fiscal conservative." Oh, and yeah. Government run healthcare. Of course, this ISN'T government run healthcare. But I don't like government run healthcare. So I don't like this bill, even though it isn't government run healthcare, because I don't like government run healthcare (and I think that railing about government run healthcare is good politics, even though this bill isn't government run healthcare). Did I mention that I don't like government run healthcare? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a leader of today's Republican Party.

Amazing. It didn't seem possible that the Philly.com comment software could have gotten even worse - but somehow it has.

TPS. Yes, I can think of one other reason. Maybe, just maybe its because the black guy is going to go down in history as passing the biggest deficit reduction bill in history...and that is only the sidebar or HCR. Oh and lets not forget that it is going to extend Medicare solvency another 9 years. I am so grateful that we have a forward looking President with incredibly sound fiscal policies. America is truly blessed!
