I was doing an interview this morning about "Tear Down This Myth" with a young writer from Vanityfair.com; he had not heard the saga of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and the solar panels that used to be on the White House roof. Ironically, I just today see that this sorry tale is now the subject of a new documentary:

Comment removed.- That is a sorry tale. Sorry everyone's time was wasted with it. jmc

Yeah, Will - it might be true that Reagan reversed Carter's initiative to reduce our dependency on foreign oil, but if he hadn't, we might not have had the joys of the invasion of Iraq or the benefits of continued conflict in the Middle East. Why we might not even have had the good fortune of being attacked on 9/11 if we didn't need to maintain a military profile in that region of the world to ensure out access to huge amounts of oil. And who needs all those fancy-schmancy new technologies with our economy rolling along at a breakneck speed? And don't forget, some foreign labor leader once said something nice about Reagan. How about Clintons 1 million solar panels on 1 million roofs initiative that Bush ruined. This was the original plan to produce 10% of all US energy consumption via renewable energy. So after all Regan and Bush are very similar, they both sucked our country dry finacially and screwed our energy policy. Zues

Comment removed.- tear down these solar panels potus
- "making solar more expensive than burning coal or oil" . . . Then let's hope our coal and oil supplies (at current prices) last as long as the life of the sun.
Comment removed.- Strange how conservatives want to liberally consume earth's finite resources, while liberals want to conserve them.
Comment removed.- My memory is completely shot at this point but didn't someone run for President in 1992 and not only win but also won re-election in 1996 who could have put those solar panels back up but didn't. I guess he was too busy getting that universal health care package passed that he promised. (As a side note, does anybody know when SOCIALIZED medicine turned into Universal Health Care??? Was it before or after the terms "curtailing the number of troops" and "withdrawal of all troops in 16 months" became synonymous) bird11
