The memories we have of them, the joy that they bring, the wonder we see through their eyes, that fierce and boundless love we feel for them, a love that takes us out of ourselves and binds us to something larger, we know that’s what matters.

We know we’re always doing right when we’re taking care of them, when we’re teaching them well, when we’re showing acts of kindness. We don’t go wrong when we do that.

That’s what we can be sure of, and that’s what you, the people of Newtown, have reminded us. That’s how you’ve inspired us. You remind us what matters. And that’s what should drive us forward in everything we do for as long as God sees fit to keep us on this Earth.

“Let the little children come to me,” Jesus said, “and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”

Charlotte, Daniel, Olivia, Josephine, Ana, Dylan, Madeline, Catherine, Chase, Jesse, James, Grace, Emilie, Jack, Noah, Caroline, Jessica, Benjamin, Avielle, Allison, God has called them all home.

Likewise, I'm interested to know why the mother had an assault weapon and why it didn't save her life. b, as far as I know, addicted "gamers" passionately stick to their game "world". The question you need answered is what led him to act beyond that world. Whatever games he played were clearly not enough.

First the right hates teachers and wants them to be treated worse than farm field hands. Now they want them to be Rambo?

Before we begin any important discussion shouldn't we set some ground rules (kind of like "you have to be this high to ride the carnival rides"): You have to be of average intelligence or higher and either be somewhat mentally healthy or on anti-psychotic drugs to join in this discussion.

So, anybody who doesn't agree with you is stupid, unstable and or on drugs?

You're not doing your side any favors.

and, btw, I think it's the teachers UNION that drives the right nuts...

Arming teachers is a fantasy born of desperation. I don't know b, maybe it's hours spent in war games that make fishwrap such an idiot.

"So, anybody who doesn't agree with you is stupid, unstable and or on drugs?"

On this subject, from what I've read and heard from the loony right since Friday, yes. And BTW, I'm my side. I speak only for myself. I often agree with others, but I don't represent anyone else.

What I'd like to know is why the mother's ample gun supply didn't save her.

In the real world, fishwrap, heretofore-peaceful school districts may now feel compelled to hire armed guards at all schools, diverting already scarce resources away from the job of education. Why? Because the next shooter may be that "odd" kid who lives down your street, or your doofy cousin who plays too many war games, or maybe has a "hobby" you want guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment.

Let's be real here, no serious outdoorsman is going to use a Bushmaster for hunting. And even if he did, he wouldn't need a 30 round clip to bag a deer.

You ought to still be allowed to hunt with them if you must, but you don't need to store the weapons/ammo at home or even own them. A secure hunting lodge or sportsman's club could store them in a vault for properly licensed hunters to use while hunting - like renting a golf cart at the country club.

Unless you're hunting a rhino or black bear, I don't see the need for an assault weapon, automatic or semi.

I'm generally opposed to "gun control" but, to say that this tragedy had nothing to do with guns, and everything to do with the insane perpetrator is naive at best.

Yes, accountability needs to fall on the perpetrator. Beyond that, accountability needs to be placed on America's culture of violence and entitlement....guns or not. The guns in the Sandy Hook tragedy had no volition.

But frankly our gun laws need work. As of now, background checks are required to obtain a gun, and certain criminal activity or mental instability (theoretically) disqualify a potential buyer. Yet, Jared Loughner was able to legally buy a gun. Our current laws need better enforcing.

Additionally, our current laws don't catch mentally unstable applicants, who have not yet developed an official history. Something needs to be done to address this shortcoming. Psych eval?

The gun show loophole should be closed immediately. Period.

Lastly, successful gun buyers should be subjected to more training than the 1/2 hour video that currently qualifies as "training". I consider myself a responsible owner, but too often I witness other gun owners, whose actions make me cringe.

I agree 100% with your comments - especially the gun show loophole. Kudos on a thoughtful and rational post.

Excellent points legatus. We have to keep in mind that the Right to keep and bear arms is as much as responsibility as an entitlement, for its purpose is ensuring a secure state, and it presumes to advance that by having a "well-regulated" militia, i.e., properly trained and trustworthy members of a community who we expect to defend it. It is actually the 4th amendment, I contend, which gives us the right to posess reasonable arms in self-defense of our person, family and home, if the need is apparent, but in the spirit of both the 2nd and 4th amendments, we should also expect our government to keep dangerous weapons from those who cannot be trusted with them.
