UPDATED: It's a cruel, cruel summer

POSTED: Thursday, August 2, 2012, 5:19 PM

The horse race is getting away from Mitt Romney:

Currently, 51% say they support Obama or lean toward him, while 41% support or lean toward Romney. This is largely unchanged from earlier in July and consistent with polling over the course of this year. Across eight Pew Research Center surveys since January, Obama has led Romney by between four and 12 percentage points.

This is because...stuff matters:

By a 52% to 37% margin, more voters say they have an unfavorable than favorable view of Mitt Romney. The poll, conducted prior to Romney’s recent overseas trip, represents the sixth consecutive survey over the past nine months in which his image has been in negative territory. While Romney’s personal favorability improved substantially between March and June – as Republican voters rallied behind him after the primary season ended– his image has again slipped over the past month.

Romney's overseas trip may have shown too many independent voters that the guy is just not ready for prime time.

UPDATE:  UPDATE: We've been getting emails from readers pointing out that the sample of the poll is skewed toward Democrats. This is a fair point: the poll does sample significantly more Democrats than Republicans. As I noted above, these results are different than the mostly static numbers we've seen so far -- the sampling numbers explain why.

Maybe instead of doing a scientific poll Pew just asked a bunch of people that they know -- they are super liberal over there, even if they are playing with Sunoco's fortune. The headline still works: It has been a cruel summer for Romney...just not always fair, which can be the cruelest cut of all.

What do the polling numbers say on the economy?
    Huh?
    Romney 53% - 44%.

That'll be close to the final popular vote tally come November.

The more Romney is known, the less people like him. Even Republicans can't warm up to him. Boehner said that people will not love him. Can't wait until the President rips him apart in the debates. Get him off topic, off his talking points and Mittens is in big trouble. He will be exposed for the empty suit that he is.

This is a joke. This is not "journalism", but just another day of Will Bunch attmepting to sway public opinion as far left as possible. Clearly, these "polls" have ZERO cred and were probably conducted up on the planet Bunchatron in the very far Leftwinglooney galaxy.

Nobody takes anything Will Bunch writes as serious. Even left wing loonies know Bunch is on another planet. I love Bunchie, because he is sooooooooo ridiculously goofy to the left, he could never possibly be taken seriously. Good for a daily laugh out loud moment. Love ya' Bunchie!!!!

oldlion..you're right. Mitt the Twit does not thrill me. Given a choice between him and the Muslim usurper though, I'll gladly support Romney. At least he can prove where he was born and doesn't need to lie about his religion.

I agree. Romney's unfavorability rating will be too difficult to overcome.

The real question is when Harry Reid will come clean about his pederasty!

"If unemployment remains...I should be a one term President." --B. Obama.

If you look at the sample, you may draw a different conclusion than Pew did (assuming you wanted to look, not gloat at the one poll has BHO over 50%). But in simple common sense, if someone asked you "Will you still be married to your spouse this time next year?" and you answer yes--you likely mean yes. If you answer no--you likely mean no. If you answer "I am not sure"--you mean no! So long as BHO is under 50% in any polling sample, the odds are he loses. You don't break towards the one you know, you break away! Enjoy the poll tonight though Will, it is ethereal as the mist!

Unfortunately for those of us who could not ever vote for a leftist like Obama we are stuck voting for the lesser of 2 evils. The middle class is getting increasingly screwed by the 2 party system. We need someone with sense in the middle where most of who go to work every day and struggle to pay the bills actually can vote for without holding our nose.
