1. Promote the living daylights out of this study that shows Philadelphia is the fifth most walkable city in America. This was already one of the city's secret assets, but with gas at $4.08 a gallon, the whole world needs to know.

2. Bench Jimmy Rollins for the first game of the upcoming Mets series, for his ridiculous failure to run hard yesterday on a Victorino bloop on which he had a 50-50 chance of scoring, which would have snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat.

3. Make a deal to get those two idiotic slots parlors off of Delaware Avenue and then make the whole world relatively happy by combining them into one giant casino and entertainment zone at the South Philly sports complex, right where the Spectrum is being knocked down.

4. Don't make this stupid trade for Colorado's Matt Holiday and mortgage the next 4-5 years of baseball in Philly for what would probably be a soon-forgotten four-day one-and-done in the 2008 playoffs. Please develop what little young talent you have left.

5. Michael Nutter's 2008 has been a little like Jimmy Rollins' -- not a lot of errors, but little inspiring play, either. Here's an idea -- use your bully pulpit as mayor to get those 10,000 black men out in the street.

6. Cancel those insufferable Lehigh workouts and go straight to the NFL regular season.

7. Build this 1,500-foot skyscraper, (pictured at top, via Philly Skyline). even though the developers have no experience and probably no idea what they're doing. Like the walkable city study, a dramatic skyline tells the world that Philly is a happening place.

8. Stop shooting one another.

9. Build a 9,000-seat arena in Chester to house the soon-to-be homeless Phantoms and Kixx -- Delco is probably the market for those teams, anyway, and then Chester will have just about everything except for, of course, a supermarket.

10. Impeach George W. Bush while there's still time. Hey, that would make the world a better place, and Philly was part of the world last time I checked.

The most walkable city is due in large part to the vision of William Penn who wanted to make one of the world's first cities to use a grid... You look at center city...it is a square pattern...

When I lived in Philadelphia on Walnut Street near 22nd (as I recall--it was 1956) I found Philadelphia very walkable. Of course, the main reason I was staying with a friend in Philadelphia at that time was that my car had a flat tire and no spare, and neither I nor my similarly unemployed friend had enough money to get the tire fixed. After we borrowed the cash from his mother, I drove out of town and moved to NYC.

Bush and Cheney should be impeached. The reason is if you don't impeach these two, what they have done will be repeated. Lying us into a war and spying on Americans both for no good reason should not be ignored. You have to wonder what would happen if Obama (or some other democrat) did things like Bush/ Cheney have done. Surely the right wing shrillers would be calling for his head. What is worse, getting thousands of good soldiers killed and shredding the Constitution or having sex with an intern and then lying about it? The answer is obvious.

Now, why does Bush, Cheney, Rove et al invoke this priveledge, instead of testifying under oath, if they have nothing to hide?

Politburo: You may be correct that the DOJ would not be the appropriate entity to investigate the deliberate criminal activity that Bush and his administration have engaged in. However, I do not believe that most Americans would support weeks, if not months, of impeachment hearings. It would be seen as "payback" for Clinton by some and a huge distraction by others (he's out of office ina few months anyway). I do feel that Bush should be held responsible for his criminal behavior, I just don't think it would be seen for what is is "high crimes and misdemeanors." That's my two cents.

MSL: Yeah I wasn't sure if it was too much hindsight. However the two scenarios are not mutually exclusive. I'm sure there was some discussion of the issue, since many Dems, whether they will admit it or not, did want to impeach the next GOP president in retaliation. Cheney was far from non-controversial, imo. He opposed MLK day, opposed the Dept. of Education, opposed sanctions on South Africa.. plus all his private sector work, potential residency issue, and his hypocritical stance vis-a-vis his daughter (this was more of a minor issue in 2000, though).

"One of the few brilliant things Bush did was to insulate himself against impeachment by choosing Cheney as VP" . . . . In retrospect, that's tempting to say, but Bush chose Cheney in 2000 primarily to give his campaign some foreign policy gravitas to counter the perception that he had no clue about world affairs. At the time, Cheney was viewed as levelheaded, experienced, and most importantly, non-controversial - the usual criteria for a Veep candidate. For example, Cheney had continued to support Papa Bush's decision not to invade Iraq in Desert Storm, for fear of the "quagmire" that would have ensued. Anyway, even if Bush is impeached and removed, Cheney would certainly pardon him of any domestic criminal liability.

Walkable city? Step outside of a building in Market Street and you will get hit by a blast of hot air heavy with smog. Wait until the air clears out, and it will be dark and the city will be overrun by the nightly shoot-em-out jerks. Also, Mayor Nutter will be able to raise the 10,000 men contingent the day the Wanamaker eagle lays an egg.

I'm unsure if I would prefer DOJ doing that.. we all know Bush has inappropriately politicized the DOJ. Obama using the DOJ to go after Bush would appear to be continuing the practice. In any case, the main reason for my comment was that you seemed to imply that impeachment of Bush would rule out any subsequent criminal investigation or charges. I agree that there is no point in pursuing impeachment (and there never really was. One of the few brilliant things Bush did was to insulate himself against impeachment by choosing Cheney as VP).

Politburo: At this time, I think America and all Americans would be better served with Congress addressing the trainwreck that Bush and his administration has delivered over the last 8 years. Sure, I would love to see Bush impeached, but quite frankly we have more important business to tend to. I would rather see a DOJ under Obama handle the criminal investigation and subsequent trials than Congress. But once Bush is gone I can see him "out of sight, out of mind."

Gibba: Impeachment does not provide immunity.. it is possible to both impeach and remove Bush, and charge him criminally, if evidence for such charges exists. But legatus is correct.. just as Bush stopped talking about Clinton, Obama will stop talking about Bush. BTW dunno how far you wanted to walk (or how much you wanted to spend).. Not surprisngly I agree with all of them except No. 1. My wife and I took the kids to Chinatwon for dinner last night. Had a great meal at our favorite Vietnamese restaurant, then decided to "take a walk" and find something for dessert. Well, we walked and walked towards Market and didn't find anything that remotely looked interesting. The kids kept commenting that Philly is "really dirty." If you want to market Philly as a walkable city, then clean the place up already. ps: I'd rather skip the impeachment of Bush and wait until he is out of office to charge him with perjury and other criminal acts.

The strange paradox of the right wing loons.......... They wholeheartedly ascribe to Reagan's slogan that government isn't the solution, it's the problem. Nothing wrong with that, if you also believe that America is defined as "We the People...", and that government is no longer accountable to the people. But if anyone is critical of that government, even when the great majority of American people concur, they're the ones that hate "America" and are nothing but a bunch of whiners.

Philly is very walkable! I've only been mugged once. Sadly, its sporting venues are far removed from most interesting things - that is my complain about its "walkability". People talking about how dangerous it is, just need to buck up. They are probably the same people who pay $20 for parking, because they are afraid to ride the broad street line.

Philadelphia is a fantastically walkable city - if you're not part of the marginalized minority cowering in their basements "fighting" the war on terror from the relative safety of their keyboards and desperately afraid that some brown person might knock on the door.
