The Seattle Symphony Orchestra has named Ludovic Morlot music director. The 36-year-old Frenchman (pictured) starts his post in the 2011-12 season...Rex Surany, a 22-year-old bass player studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, has won the bronze medal in the inaugural Bradetich Foundation International Double Bass Solo Competition held June 20 at the University of North Texas...Violinist Francesca de Pasquale, 20, has won the 25th annual Irving M. Klein International String Competition at San Francisco State University. A student at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Gloria and retired Philadelphia Orchestra violinist William de Pasquale...The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble led by Allison B. Vulgamore for 16 years before she became president of the Philadelphia Orchestra, has a deficit of $6 million and is on its way to adding another $2 million to the figure, reports Pierre Ruhe, longtime chronicler of the orchestra. Vulgamore's successor, Stanley Romanstein, is on a mission to "mend broken relationships with the community," says board chairman Ben Johnson.
