Philadelphia Orchestra bankruptcy inspires cartoon

POSTED: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 11:23 AM

Drew McManus, arts consultant and dedicated orchestra-world blogger, has linked us to this bit of gallows humor by Dixon, creator of a cartoon about orchestras.

Dixon doesn't name his characters, but I do believe the figure on the right is president Allison Vulgamore.

The entire Board and management are nothing but a cartoon.

I have a question: why is Mr. Worley the chairman of the orchestra? I just read an interview he did with Mainline Today a couple years ago in which he was asked what his passions were. His reply was fishing and flying. Now those are fine passions to have, but not for the chairman of one of the greatest orchestras in the world. This association deserves a chairman whose life passion is music, and whose personal mission is breathing life into our orchestra. My opinion of Mr. Worley is that he's a very capable business man-emphasis on business. But that's not what we need. We need someone who can't function without the sound the orchestra makes. As for Ms. Vulgamore, I think a good caption would be "it's someone else's fault." Every time I hear her speak she's throwing people under the bus for the orchestra's problems. It's time the board does the same.

Another silly slogan from the Tierney Group, the folks that brought us "The Place That Loves You Back".
