ABe Torchinsky was my tuba teacher from 1970-72. Apart from his playing ability, he was one a great story-tellers, passing the lore of the orchestral music business along to the next generation. What a wonderful man, wonderful musician, and wonderful teacher! extubaist
Does anyone else remember "Catch the Brass Ring" and Torchy Jones? The Torchy-Jones Brass Quintet was made up of members of the Philadelphia Orchestra brass section. Gil Johnson, Seymour Rosenfeld, Mason Jones, Henry C. Smith and Abe Torchinsky were the groups players. The recording was released by Columbia Records. It had a rhythm section along with the horns. It was a fun recording. salazar
Knowing Abe Torchin goes back to the 1950's. Souder Street had one Headquarters for Learning, and that was the Torchinsky home. We had many teens who got a better musical and cultural education than any school could offer. Steve Shulman, Steve Black, Mel Shapiro, and many others routinely stopped by. Sadly, everyone went their own way. We lost track of Abe and Family. Maybe now in his memory, we can get back together. Abe was a "one in a trillion." He will be sadly missed. Ed Budman Ed Budman
