Rush Limbaugh, sports mogul
What if Rush owned the Rams and broadcast his own games?
Rush Limbaugh, sports mogul
Dick Polman, Inquirer National Political Columnist
In the wee small hours of the morning, in a palatial Florida manse, a prospective National Football League owner is dreaming fitfully about the future (sometimes in his own actual words)....
"Afternoon, folks, I'm Rush Limbaugh, and welcome to today's game featuring my very own St. Louis Rams. Soon to be renamed the Rushes. We're on the road today, in one of those godforsaken un-American cities, whose team is called the Eagles, which is just outrageous when you think about it, appropriating a patriotic icon like the American eagle, in a city that went belly up for the Messiah in the last election, I look around this stadium and I swear there are socialists up and down the aisles, like one of those newsreels of the crowd in Red Square - "
"Rush, can I interrupt?"
"Oh, mercy, where are my manners. Folks, I may have taken over the broadcasting duties for the Rushes, but not even I can do it alone. So I'm joined today by my color commentator, Sean Hannity. Sean, you wanna set the stage for today's tilt? I know my guys are pumped up, ready to prove that an all-white squad can win big even with the liberal media against it."
"It's clear and cold here in Philly, Rush, 22 degrees at game time, and don't you think that must drive the global-warming alarmists crazy?"
"Absolutely, those extremists are no better than the Taliban and Iran, because - oh wait, sorry, folks, we've been talking so much we missed the kickoff. Eagles start from their own 35. The snap to Donovan McNabb. Fakes left, rolls right, throws...oh for pete's sake, it's complete to Brian Westbrook for a pickup of nine. Bet the media will make a real big deal out of that one. It's like how they root for Obama. Obama, McNabb, Westbrook, whoever, the media is very desirous that we all feel guilty for slavery. You see a pattern here, folks? Liberal sellouts. Liberal sellouts have an affirmative action advantage in this league - "
"Rush? Excuse me, but you missed the next play. 56 yard TD, McNabb to Sean DeJackson."
"Or maybe it's DeSean Jackson, what difference does it make, a name like that. Just lookit the way they're all prancing around the end zone, disgusting, it's like the Crips and the Bloods. Folks, these minority players never have to do anything for which they have to apologize, and it's high time we called them out on this, instead of having our testicles locked up in a testicle lockbox - "
"Rush?"
" - and it's just a joke. It is a joke. We have a swine flu epidemic, we're bombing the hell out of the moon, our dollar is worthless, the Messiah is designing our cars, the whole world would like to put a nuclear missile up our rectum, and my guys got the media against them because, folks, you know, if 100 percent of the players in the National Football League were black, the media would still treat them as though they just escaped bondage and, in fact, are still in it - "
"Excuse me, Rush. Remember the game? The Eagles just kicked off to our guys - "
"Well, that's mighty white of them."
" - but, well, look for yourself. We fumbled at the 20, and the Eagles just ran it in for a touchdown."
"Oh my golly gosh, will you look at that. No way I'm going to sit here all day and get bitch-slapped upside the head. I'm colorblind, and I treat everybody equally, but this is too much. Folks, this is too much. Sean, let's look ahead to next week. We at least gonna be playing somewhere in real America?"
"Rush, we play the Bears. We're going to Chicago, and...Hey, Rush, you OK? You don't look so good."
"Who draws up this schedule, Karl Marx? Folks, these schedulers are like agents of the nanny state, little nannies who want to control every aspect of all of our lives, and I'm not in that game. No way my guys are taking the field in Chicago. They can have the Olympics before they can have us. I'll play in Kenya before I play in the Messiah's backyard, because, folks, this is an issue of freedom and liberty, and next thing you know they'll make us have flu shots, bunch of busybody people - and hey, look at McNabb down there on the sidelines, smiling like he actually earned it, golly, that irritates the hell out of me. Anybody here got any OxyContin?"
Hilarious. HandNik- Well we've got unemployment of 9.8 percent, soldiers dying every day in Afghanistan, the dollar is declining, our debt is 12 trillion but the left has declared war on Rush Limbaugh. Rather sad that this is the leadership the left has to offer.

Polman makes fun of drug/substance addiction. Some people simply have no class or limits. CD75- Thanks Dick. You're a breath of freah air. This is too funny. And I might add...on the mark!
Um, nobody on the left fears Rush Limbaugh. Except they might fear being eaten by his lard girth, or sat on, or attacked by one of his listeners incited by his hate-mongering. They attack him because he's a clown. (And you couldn't pay me enough to listen to him. Just knowing that he exists makes me nauseous.) CutterMcCool- swedesboromike or should I say Mr.Repugnivisionist. Uh I think it was your president cheney's stooge W that is to blame for the war. UH also the unemployment and as I recall, left us with the debt.
- I can tell from the post that DP has never listened to a minute of Rush's show. jmc
- If you were waiting to find out whether Dick Polman has any skill as a satirist, the results are in, and it's not good news for Mr. Polman.
Comment removed.- jfeliccia- Obama is president. he has been for 9 months now. Unemployment is going up, not down. I can see you are frustrated which is why you are lashing out and name calling
First of all, cuttermccool acknowledges he never listens to Rush, so I guess he is unaware that Rush has lost 85 pounds on a diet and exercise program. Maybe he should have seen the interview on the Today show. Second, Rush never said anything about slavery or bondage as it relates to the NFL. Maybe Polman should have seen Stephen A Smith on CNN. This satire is okay, but perhaps we should get CNN to factcheck it like they did the Saturday Night Live skit. tom - wilmington, de- How interesting the reaction by the black community on this issue. I love it in today’s PC world how blacks can live the double standard. Having cart blanc to say whatever you want without repercussions must be a nice thing. God forbid a white person publicly speaks their mind. I’m not a Rush fan but I got to give him props for keeping it “real.” delcodanno

It's all a sham to make loads of money. Rush, Hannity, Beck, Olberman, Scuhltz etc. They fire up their audience with red meat. And, like lemmings going over a cliff, they buy it hook, line, and sinker. In reality, it'a all abut the benjamins for these guys. They laugh all the way to the bank. Mark1
Once again Rush never made that comment about slavery. If he did, then please, phillyhoodlum, provide the source. I am sure if you know he made that statement than you know the source. As for repercussions for statements, you have people like Al Sharpton, author of the Tawana Brawley hoax, calling other people racist and saying they should not achieve certain things based on past statements. Show me when Sharpton was ever held back from anything, or even offered an apology, for the Tawana Brawley incident, which destroyed some good people's lives and reputations. tom - wilmington, de
From Fox News "In an unannounced move, President Obama is dispatching up to 15,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan beyond the 21,000 he announced in March. The additional troops are primarily support forces -- such as engineers, medical personnel, intelligence experts and military police. A Washington Post report published Tuesday said Obama dispatched 13,000 additional troops, but an unnamed defense official familiar with the process told Fox News that the number is closer to 15,000." CBS also reported the story, but they had the number pegged at 13,000. tom - wilmington, de

This Baucus healthcare bill is bad news. It is full of gimmicks, accounting tricks, and giveaways. It should not pass, but it will. There are no liberals listening to Dimbulb. We understands that he constantly lies because that's what his listerners want to hear. I don't take issue with someone saying what his listeners want to hear. I just don't get why his listeners want to hear his bs. You'd think that there are no legitimate conservatives. Only the wacko fringe. But there's no way he'll ever be an owner of an NFL team. Too much money at stake to take that risks. But if he did, they wouldn't be called the Rush. They'd be an all white team in all white uniforms and they'd be called the Klan. MikeP

Narcisisst...if you think I am going to believe something posted on liberal blog without its being sourced, you are just another naive Obama "The One" follower and there is no point in even debating the issue. Give me a credible news source. The Youtube posts at the bottom of the blog, with The Young Turks from Air America, do not portend any racism in them. In fact, it is anything but racism. Talking about how immigrants have outpaced those who are natural citizens, how the Great Society has not lifted people out of poverty, etc. is anything but racist, it is probably true. tom - wilmington, de

When liberals here taunt others, call them names and generally debase the debate, they are no better than Limbaugh. And believe me, I find him absolutely appalling. While Tom and I usually disagree, I have a lot of respect for him because he does cite sources, and he is very informed. I like to hear the opposite point of view if I'm not be insulted or abused, but rather talked to like an adult. I can't imagine anyone's mind being changed from being belittled and insulted. Likewise, no one should just accept a statement without knowing the source (that's my journalism background showing). But really, Polman was just being satirical today, so everyone could actually lighten up and not lose any philosophical ground. NigeltheMastiff- Narcissit87- Rather amusing considering you are from the crowd that lets Michael Moore speak for them.
Interesting you are posting drivel based on unsourced quotes from Rush. Did you use Wikipedia, or just the talking points e-mail from MoveOn.Org? I thought we lived in America where captialism still exists, until the President takes that over. Rush did not make these statements, and if you did any research, you would know that. Sad that the Inquirer is awash with Leftists like Polman and Bunch. Bush3

But seriously, Michael Moore has been speaking for the Democratic party for a long time. Now today there is a report that 15,000 more troops are going to Afghanistan, Oil prices are up, the dollar is declinging, unemployment is around 17% when you consider all the people who's benefits have run out, and within one week our debt will be above 12 trillion dollars. I can you see you've got nothing left in the tank but to sit around and bit*ch about Rush Limbaugh. This is what the left does when their solutions are failures and they are bereft of ideas. They make Rush Limbaugh the scapegoat.
So Rush wants to own a team in the revenue sharing NFL. Who's the socialist now? SteveMG

How much public money went into building that dome he wants to have his team play in? SteveMG- Janann- The score is 4.7 unemployment for all of 2001 and the current rate for Obama is 9.8. Even after 9-11 the unemployment rate for 2002 was 5.8. The small minds in big government now tell us the unemployment rate will surpass 10%. Above 17% when you factor in those whose benefits have run out. Bottom line is there is absolutely nothing that would incentivize business right now to hire or for consumers to purchase. The two combining factors is a double whammy for the accounts receivable deparment known as the IRS.
longshanks - Swedesboro Mike didnt need to do thosee protests against Bush because there were plenty of others on the Left going to Anti-Bush rallies the last 8 years and holding signs comparing Bush to Hitler, calling him a Nazi, a Fascist, and advocating killing him (look it up). Narcisisst....Great. Glad to see you did some research. Now, please provide the proof so I may also see the light. What are the sources of the quotes? Can you please provide a link to your proof? It seems funny that some of these quotes are supposed to have been from 1998, but the media uproar did not occur until 2009? I wonder where the journalists were for the past 11 years. If the quotes being attributed to Limbaugh are from a book published in 2006, it should be noted that the author also does not cite the source of the quotes. Most books contain footnotes, bibliographical sources for quotes, but the 2006 publication (published by Nation books in NYC) offers no such detail. tom - wilmington, de

He's too controversial a figure. Whoever ends up buying the Rams will be some obscure billionaire that no one has heard of or a buying group with some ex nfl players. Wanting to buy and having the money is only half the battle of owning an NFL Franchise. The owners have to approve it and my bet is they would rather avoid the controversy.
Comment removed.- Janan- I have admitted may times before that GW Bush was a big liberal spender. He created a new trillion dollar entitlement called prescription drug, created a new government burearacracy called the office of Homeland Security, signed every pork laden bill that came accross his desk, and sent billions in aid to other countries. But on foreign policy he was a rock. He had the courage of conviction and will prove to have fundamentally changed the middle east when we look back many years from now upon his presidency. His policies set forth the appropriate measures to protect our homeland and overseas installations from terror.
WOW, this really drew them out today. Not cutting edge satire but it's OK. Who cares if Rush wants to invest in a sports team? If he's got the buck - go for it. JimR- See link below. Smike, who are all of those that Michael Moore speaks for? Having been outed as a wild eyed lib myself, I neve felt that he speaks for me. I think he's a human cartoon, self absorbed and self promoting - a lot like Rush. JimR- JimR- Michael Moore speaks for the Democratic party. He has for sometime now. I have yet to hear a Democrat say a negative word about him. His movies are loved by liberals. He's won major awards and his anti Bush, pro Cuban style healthcare rhetoric is mimicked by the Democratic party on a regular basis. I think Maxine Waters recently told us what a great job Castro was doing down in Cuba on healthcare. That's pretty much how Michael Moore sees it too. I guess the truth hurts.
Smike, that's a pretty far stretch even for one who speaks hyperbole as a first language. I don't see Dems saying much about him at all. He's not worth the effort and is ignored by all but the fringe. But, given those guidelines, I'd assume that Rush speaks for the Republican party then, especially after the episode where Michael Steele bowed at his altar. JimR

Squirm all you want but it's fairly evident that Michael Moore is the Icon of left wing politics.
JIMR: Swede is here to get votes for Conse 'Pubs and tax cuts. A Conse 'Pub will smite your enemies with more and bigger troops and weapons, and you'll have more money in YOUR wallet. Moore is the lead Dem, not Obama, either Clinton, Biden, etc. ............... Your vote for a Conse 'Pub will put more money in Swede's wallet. Talvenada- Michael Moore told the democrats to get in step with the public option or else. Here is the article. Are you seriously telling me he is not influential on liberal policy?................ http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/76262.html
- The filmmaker also applauded President Barack Obama on several fronts, but said the president needs to "hit the reset button, and go back to the drawing board" with the health care debate. So Michael Moore laying it down on what Barack should do. He pulls the dancing strings of the small minds running our bloated government.
- Michael Moore runs the propaganda machine for the Democratic Party and keeps the party members from going astray. That part is very clear. He is essentially the mullah behind the throne of liberalism who calls the shots and forments the democrats policy positions
- Moores movies highlighting the Democratic talking points is more proof he speaks for the Democratic Party. Bowling for Columbine was the Democratic talking point for gun control. Fareneheit 9-11 was the Democratic anti war talking point. Capitalism a love story is the Democratic talking point for regulation of compensation for Wall Street ( off course no mention that Wall Street Execs donated generously to Obama) So there you have it JimR. I don't know how you can say it is unrealistic that Michael Moore speaks for the Democratic party.

One right wing whine that I don't get is this business about not being able to speak your mind about race (translation--about the sins and omissions of black people). What's stopping you? I hear this kind of talk about race all the time from people of all classes of society. Is it only Limbaugh listeners who think they can't express these views? And another thing I don't get is why right-wingers deal with the racist minority within the republican party by implausibly asserting that it doesn't exist--rather than the better and easier strategy of simply distancing yourself from this small group of misguided people. liberal
swede--how come you're such an expert on Michael Moore's movies? A shameful vice of yours? Are you at least sneaking in the theater without paying for a ticket? liberal
SWEDE: Didn't some health group just do a study by Price Waterhouse that showed the status quo would be cheaper for insurance costs? Talvenada

SWEDEMIKE - Reading your criticism of Obama one can only assume you are admitting that Bush's borrowing to pay the rich a tax rebate was an extremely poor idea. And as far as the soldiers - I go with Half Story Hannity and do not criticize the commander in chief in a time of war as I wish to be patriotic. As far as Limbaugh is concerned - much ado about NOTHING. Those NFLers will go where the money is ModerateMarge
Again, I agree with "Lefty" JimR --- if Rush can afford to buy the team, good for him. Initially I would agree with SMike, in that I doubt the NFL would allow him to buy the Rams. But, it seems that there's been a pretty strong history of various rogues & low lifes owning teams, so what's one more? What, now money doesn't talk in the NFL? And anyone who thinks there will be large numbers of African American players not signing with the Rams because of Rush, hasn't really been following sports over the last decade. yobill626
Smike, I got your point(s). They are not all true but I see where you're going with it. I don't think the Dem on the street knows Moore's movies like you do. WOW!. Feel free to express part II. Does then Rush speak for the Republican party being as no one speaks badly of him and Michael Steele pays him tribute. Rush will tell you himself that he is the voice of conservative thought. Just wondering... JimR
Must be another slow news day to be attacking Rush for wanting to buy an NFL team Dick. It's not like there aren't other interesting political stories like healthcare, the Nobel peace prize, or Afghanistan. camtheman
YO BILL: Rush is taking credit for spawning Glenn Beck, The WH Watchdog. Beck is the canary in the coalmine to let us know when Obama launches his many private armies, youth camps, relocation camps, internment settlements, indoctrination colleges, brainwashing shock treatments, and a secret police force. Talvenada
AHH the jeolously rears its ugly head in even such a scholar as Polman. Such a sad thing to behold. Paul in Surprise, AZ- JimR- Moore makes major motion pictures promoting Democratic policy while deriding conservatives. He certainly owns the propaganda wing of the Democratic party and does much of the henchman work for the DNC. I think I have more than made the case that Moore is the mouthpiece of the DNC.
ModerateMarge- I was admitting that Bush was a big spender. The tax cuts hepled the economy. And from 2003 thru 2007 the economy was growing and unemployment was around 5%. But we've have always had spending issues in this country regardless of who is in charge. ModerateMike
still_independent...thanks for the link, and you are right, in context it is not too bad. However, the way the quote is being portrayed, especially from that website linked by narcisisst, is made to appear Rush is saying the NFL players have gang links. That is now what he was saying, and when the entire transcript is read, it does not (IMHO) have much of a racist bent to it. Liberal....people do not discuss race for fear of being labeled racists. For example, just look at how many people on this site label anyone who criticizes Obama as being racists. Any criticism of Obama is because of race, the tea party people were racists, the townhall protestors were racists, nobody who criticizes Obama does so based on policy. Haven't you read the NYT or watched Olberman/Maddow/Shultz/Matthews lately? tom - wilmington, de
swede...I know you know, but janann is blaming Bush for 9/11. That is the event being described as "anything Obama does cannot be as bad as Bush's first nine months". So, Bush was to blame for 9/11. That means that anything that happens during Obama's term is all his fault. Should be an interesting debate. tom - wilmington, de
Hey, I like this reset of relations with Russia. Obama went back on the US committment for missile shield in Poland and radar in Czech as Russia requested, and just look at all the help they are giving us with Iran. I mean, they are right there with us now, sitting next to Hillary as they declare ""Threats of new sanctions and pressure against Iran under current circumstances are counterproductive,". WOW. Yep, love this "smart power", this "reset of relations", this new diplomacy where America does not lead. Yep, glad the adults are back in charge again in Washington D.C. tom - wilmington, de

janan- There was never a surplus. I have posted that link many times. In 2000 Clinton got within 20 billion of balancing the budget. Of course Arthur Anderson style accounting was popular at the time so liberals like to say there was a suprplus. Clinton grew the debt by 1.2 trillion dollars during his presidency. ModerateMike- Janan- Every situation is different. Quite frankly Bush did take a lot of blame for not connecting the dots before 9-11. In Obama's situation we are well into his presidency and unemployment is up to 9.8 % when we were told it would not go above 8% if the stimulus was passed. Does he not deserve any blame?
ModerateMike--look at the curve of national debt vs GDP. From the end of the Carter administration the only time that curve came close to leveling out was during Clinton's tenure. He was the only president since 1980 who can even plausibly be called a good steward of the government's finances. The others--all republicans--were shocking wastrels, although I'd give George HW Bush credit for starting the budget turnaround that Clinton continued. For that, conservatives reviled the elder Bush--go figure. liberal
swede--I guess by your standards Obama should have enacted a larger stimulus package than the one the republicans unanimously voted against? Oh, I see--the republicans wanted more stimulus to keep unemployment down. Right. Where exactly are you going on this, and before you get into it let me point out that the stimulus contained a large tax cut component, contrary to the false assertions continually made by republican spokespeople. liberal
liberal, you are an intelligent person. You know government. Therefore, you know that Presidents do not spend money, Congress does. Presidents do not write budgets, Congress does. Clinton did not write any balanced budget, the Republican Congress (to which you give no credit) did. True, Clinton proposed lower spending, and even stated in a State of the Union that "The era of big government is over". However, he did this only after Republicans gained control of Congress and he, in a deft political move, adjusted his priorities accordingly. Also, it was a Democrat controlled House that wrote each budget for 2007, 2008 and 2009. True, Bush was a big spending Republican, and Republicans spent too much money while they were in control in early 2000's. But they were kicked out for their reckless spending, Democrats campaigned against reckless spending, and now look at what we have. I suppose you are uncomfortable with all the money now being spent, and projected to be spent. What is being proposed cannot be compared to anything before now, they pale in comparison. Besides, a $14 per week tax credit is not a tax cut, and where is that stimulating anything? The stimulus was to create jobs (the TARP was for the financial crisis...two separate bills). So, where (besides in government) are the jobs? I saw that Michigan has received $3.8 Billion of stimulus that saved or created 19,800 jobs. I guess that makes up for the 300,000 jobs they have lost this year, right? tom - wilmington, de
