Football: Training camp confidential: Sterling

Coach: Clint Wiley

Last year: 8-2, second in the Colonial Liberty, lost to Woodstown in the first round of the SJ 2 tournament

Schedule: West Deptford, bye, at Audubon, Woodbury, at Haddonfield, Paulsboro, Gateway, at Overbrook, at Lindenwold, at Collingswood (Thanksgiving)

Player to watch: Senior OL/DL Anthony Peletsky (pictured). The 6-2, 215-pound athlete is a returning two-way starter for the Silver Knights and one of a group of 16 seniors who have helped turn around the program. He plays offensive guard and defensive end. "He's an old-school football player," Wiley said. "He has that blue-collar mentality."

Outlook: Sterling has two of the Colonial Conference's better players in seniors Davon Tucker and J.T. Thompson. The 5-11, 215-pound Tucker, an RB/LB, is a Western Michigan recruit. He also is a top track sprinter. The 6-0, 280-pound Thompson, a OL/DL, is a dominant force in the trenches, especially on defense. Both guys are four-year varsity players and three-year starters. Other key veterans for Sterling include senior RB/DB Richard Carter (5-10, 150), senior RB/DB Vimire Jenkins (5-10, 175), senior TE/LB Joe Matchett (6-0, 185), senior OL/DL Brian Mahadeo (5-8, 210), junior RB/DB Hunter Byrd (5-8, 150) and senior DL Danvil Combs (5-10, 205). The QB will be either senior Matt Mignano (6-0, 180), who started last season, or junior Aran Lee (6-2, 190).

Fast fact: This is Wiley's fourth year as coach. In the three years before his arrival, Sterling was 6-24. In the three years since, Sterling is 19-11.

Quote: "We've been laying the foundation for three years. This is the year it's going to pay off," Thompson said.
